    One mistake I see a lot of drivers make, is that they seem to think the only place to overtake is on the brakes going into a corner. This tends to lead to a lot of incidents where the attacking driver can't make it stick and hits the defending car. IMO, even if they get it done, it's a dirty pass and the position "should" be given back. A better idea is to feint to the inside to get the defending driver to cover that line. Once he is committed and off the preferred line, move back to the outside and lift to open up a small gap. The idea is to brake early and time it so that the defender exits the corner as you are catching them again. Only now, if you did it right, you will have carried much more speed by using the preferred line, and can drive right by them down the following straight.

    I have just got my first wheel and started Sim Racing, I have some prior knowledge to the sport and have been a lover of cars and f1 all my life. Opted out to start with MX-5 Cups so I get to know the ropes. First races my idea was just to finish the race and not crash too much. I will never forget a moment where I was just behind the guy and I was waging should I try a pass or not, an idea popped and I tought, ill just stay really close in his mirror and make him panic. And what do you know, 2 corners down the track he started to lose confidence and ended oversteering to the sand. I am glad that that idea kinda came on its own in my mind and I knew not a lot of people think like that which gives me an advance atleast in the rookie years.

    You raced the infamous Dominic Martinelli! There's a Reddit post trying to figure out how he went from 1350 iR to 9000 in less than 3 weeks. People are thinking it's a group smurf account getting ready for the Daytona 24.

      He’s done it 2x before, assuming it’s the same guy. He was Campbell Jackson2 and Visa Cardholder35 or something.
      He’s really fast. Top 5 in gmx5, but his consistency is more impressive to me. I race with him a lot, and he never seems to throw a race away.

    On braking; The general rule in real racing is to brake when the car in front enters the normal braking zone, not when you do. It applies in sim racing as well. If you see they are braking later than normal you can adjust accordingly. That doesn't work when passing someone much slower than you.
    I would say he went off track because you didn't leave any room on track. Nowhere else to go.

    VR made close racing possible for me. It's so much easier to judge the front end of your car and the back end of theirs. The other issue I found was that close racing and working out your strategy on the hoof is intensely satisfying, and that coming off the gas early but still staying contact is weird to the extent that I thought the software was at fault.

      VR is a must. I can’t go back to monitors now

  • @davidius74
    @davidius74 Год назад +1

    I think what is hard on some drivers, especially newer ones, is only having a standard flat screen monitor (under 25") Once you get a curved monitor or triple screens or VR, then you have the peripheral vision to be able to give the space. I also have a problem of braking TOO early and for TOO long meaning I can never setup the pass as I lost the draft. The easiest way for me is to watch where the other guy is slower through a turn and I am quicker. I will then drop back a little bit a couple of turns earlier, (basically back where the third car was in relation to the lead car in your vid), but as we approach the corner I am faster at then I know I am quicker and don't have to slow down as much I can exit the corner right on his bumper but going 10-20 kmh (6-13 mph) quicker and then pass on the straight.
    I think that scenario I mentioned goes to along with your first point in knowing who you are racing against. If you know the person, you know their tendencies especially if you are in the same league and race that particular car and track combo and know how they are with it. If you have never raced the person before ( at least not for that track/car combo) then watch them for a couple of laps and work out where there are quick and where they struggle so you know where the best point to make your move is.
    Great advice as always Dave, I have become a better driver from watching you and hearing your explanations.

    When I used to circle track race, (real) when I first started out, I drove the car with the steering wheel and not the throttle, and I would pinch the car off the bottom, couldn't really tell where the wall was, and a grizzly old vet said to me, and I'll never forget, if you car hear your exhaust your close enough, if you can't get closer, I'm just starting this video, so it might cover this, but sound sound and sound use your ears, the wider your front stage speakers are apart the more it helps, learn your ears, and you won't have to worry about your eyes, really helped out on the track, use it all the time when I sim.

    Braking early while following a car closely, is also an issue of physics. If a car is within inches of a car ahead, the following car can’t brake at their “normal” brake point because the rear end of the car ahead is still occupying the space, where the car behind needs to be. Braking at the same time,or after the car ahead is almost always going to end up with the front car being hit.
