Dear Lady, I'm 83 years old and when I was about 6 years old, so we are talking about 77 years ago, the women in Portugal already used yarn bowls. They are very useful if you are working with thread rather than yarn. They are just OK for yarn, but for thread, they are excellent.
I wonder what these look like? I’ve never seen anyone using these here in Portugal. Also, it seems our yarn is always in skeins or those long ‘rolls’, I haven’t seen a single cake!
coming in a year late lol to say that if you want to try out a yarn bowl without spending any money, stick a binder clip on the side of a bowl from your kitchen (as long as it fits your ball/skein/cake). for the "swirl" function, you can flip the metal tabs up and thread your yarn through. $0 & works fine esp to try it out!
Good review. But I’m surprised not many people are talking about how the swirls(especially in the Wood material) aren’t sanded well, causing yarn to get snagged... functionally disappointing especially when the bowl itself is so VISUALLY pleasing...

I have the plastic one from Amazon......at first I thought it was a no go. But I watched this video and it set my fears at ease lol! I discovered that the yarn does not go through both holes, then, that it was not broken. So I learned that I need to pull the yarn towards me with the yarn looped through the big hole facing opposite me. Voila I am now a happy camper!😀 Thank you for this review
Lovely review, thank you for that. I think the heavy stainless bowl is more for bulky yarn use. A nice chunky Bernat or Caron 5 or 6 weight would sit nicely in that one. You would need the wider swirl for a chunkier yarn. That was a very helpful overview, looking forward to your next one.
Great yarn bowl review. I know so many people want to buy a yarn bowl because they're beautiful and people think they're going to really enjoy using them. Then once they have one, they never use it since all their yarn is in skeins. Who does that? ME. I did exactly that and now I'm not quite sure where my pretty wooden yarn bowl is. I found personally that if you have a yarn roller to make your skeins onto cakes the yarn bowls are actually really effective especially if you pull from the middle of the cake and turn it on it’s side so it’s not rolling around the yarn glides out smoothly it’s a bit of extra effort rolling the yarn but if you want to make more use out of your yarn bowl I found it’s worth the extra time 😌

I currently have 2 dressers, a 4 shelf closet, and 3 storage containers full of hooks, buttons, needles, other gadgets gathered over 50 years and TONS OF YARN and pattern books. I doubt I would use these. I have a little finger that works nicely. Plus, thanks for the tip on skeins. While both my daughter and oldest grandson afghans are with Lion cakes, my 16 year old grandsons afghan is Mary Maxim skeins.
I'm glad I stayed through your showing of your 5 bowls. At the beginning, when you only mentioned the con of them not working with skeins, I was concerned that you didn’t include material/construction and bowl weight too. Thankfully, you covered some of this as you talked about the specific bowls you have. The biggest issue I've found is with damages (cracks, chips and broken off pieces on the wooden and ceramic bowls I've either purchased or looked at in stores) and rough edges on improperly sanded wooden bowls and some ceramic ones (maybe due to the type of clay used?) I didn’t pay close enough attention to that until I noticed one of my smoother yarns looking a little fuzzy in the end product. Oops! And weight also became a consideration after a lightweight wooden one I'd been using was pulled off the table, by a knotted join in the yarn. The bowl broke and the ball rolled under the couch. Took a while to get all the cat and Sherry hair off it. 😜
i personally dont have a yarn bowl, but i would really reccomend getting a yarn winder first, they are quite cheap, and make yarn much easier to crochet with and storage, i have a manual winder, and making yarn into cakes really helps, you only got to get that center pull and that way you won't even need a yarn bowl, however, I do think they look nice on the workspace, and even as part of a greater "crochet on the go" piece, so as said in the video, the bowl will prevent your yarn from flying around. Overall, you like the bowl, buy it, use it whenever to can and want to, but remember that to crochet you pretty much only need yarn and a hook.

I noticed a pop-up that asked if viewers liked the music.... in other circumstances I might have ... sadly I found it distracting and frustrating that I couldn't figure out a way to mute it. You see, what you have to say is much more important. The background sound seemed to be holding a competition and it was drowning you out. Would you perhaps consider for future videos allowing the viewer the option to decide if they want to hear the music? Might it be possible to offer a link from your Little Red Piano RUclips channel in the description box that would allow viewers the option to play the music in the background ?
Yeah this late, I came here to find out why I need a yarn bowl. I am a center puller. I just don't understand why some yarn companies make it close to impossible to find that center pull...looking especially at you Bernat Blanket. I have found a way to deal with the outside pulls. We all get packages in cardboard boxes. If you use a box that is 8" or 10" tall and about the same width, drop skein or ball or cake into the box and start pulling. If its an outside pull its just going to jump around inside the box...no dust bunnies or pet hair. Or use a small plastic trash bag...6 - 10 gallons. Same thing drop in yarn and get started. No muss no fuss. The plastic works wonders if you are using multiple strands together. Each in their own bag. I do not need a yarn bowl!😊
I never buy or use yarn bowls. I find them very difficult for me because I have quite a tight tension when it comes to knitting and I’m afraid that if I put my yarn in one of those things, I’ll pull it off the table and it will break whether it’s wood, ceramic, or plastic. I tried yarn bowls several times but I never can get them to work out for me.
You mention that you don't have time to wind your twisted hanks into cakes. How do you crochet from a hank (without first winding it into a cake) without it ending up a twisted mess?
Sorry that wasn’t clear. I don’t crochet from a hank - you’re right that would be a mess. I just meant that I use skeins more than hanks for that reason. I believe I also said that I don’t have the time to wind SKEINS into cakes since they are workable as is already.
I enjoy using my yarn ball winder and will purposely wind skeins into cakes. I have been known to become mesmerized watching the winder create the most perfectly-wound cake of yarn. In my next life I plan to learn about physics so I can understand how it works lol.
@@DesertBlossomCrafts You must be lucky and never get the dreaded skein yarn barf. I always wind my skeins into cakes before working because always there's a yarn barf, large or small. It's easier to unsnarl it out before starting to crochet.
Not sure what the problem is using skeins or hanks with a yarn bowl. I pop the yarn onto my yarn winder and 5 minutes later I have a cake of yarn which I can then put into my yarn bowl. It takes no time at all to be honest.

It looks as though the yarn will slip out of the projected end of the swirl. I crochet and my yarn is on the floor in a round basket, $3 from Walmart. Do you have a video of which height you would need to use this yarn bowl?
Poor review. you were not stating the same thing in each bowl. bowls come in different sizes. what ever size you need you buy. putting your hook through a whole is really no big deal. you can still put your hook in your yarn from the top. that minor noise you commented on is per yarn how fast a person crochets, they all will make a sound. talk about the depth of the yarn swirl or if they have smooth holes, you can make a cake any size you want to fit your bowl.... I'd say, it taught me nothing e
It´s not true, that you cańt use them with Skeins. I work a lot with Skeins and use a Yarnbowl and it works fine . No Problems till now and i do that for almost 40 Years now .

That’s a great tip if you want to go the cheaper route!
When using a cake and pulling the yarn from the middle, simply lay cake on its side and pull from the middle. Works great and cake doesn’t spin.

The cost of one of these would buy more yarn, or something much more needed. I bought a large deep cereal bowl from a thrift store. It works perfect

A Yarnbowl is good at Skeins too. I use them for all kind of Yarn
I work from skeins, center pull usually, but as the skein collapses I wind it into a ball, then I need a bowl lol
I habe a yarn bowl that I don't like. It was handmade by a friend. But I don't like it because my yarn still jumps out. Maybe I need a different one.

Some of the swirls do work better than others. That’s cool! I don’t have a video on that yet but it’s a good idea for one!
