Yeah, I just recently "accidentally" overindulged in a big yarn buying spree, myself. I sure didn't intend to buy as much as I did, but, you know how it goes! 🤣 A large percentage of it is destined to become items for other people, but I still get 100% of the joy of knitting it all, 😃so it still feels quite selfishly indulgent! 😊

I bought 6 different colors of the Big Twist t-shirt yarn this week! It was 25% off + another 20% off entire purchase. I’m so pleased you gave it 10 out of 10. I’m hoping to make baskets and a plant hanger and a tote bag for starters.

As an amigurumi crocheter, I LOVE the juicy couture yarn 😍 I usually prefer velvet yarns for my plushies and tend to primarily use the Bernat velvet line, but the juicy couture yarn is slightly more plush and has more vibrant colors in the line (there’s a neon yellow that almost hurts to look at it’s so bright 😂). And the fact that almost all the colors also has a ‘sparkle’ version is so fun!
My only dislike is the price, you get wayyy less in a ball compared to Bernat velvet for almost the same price. I rarely buy it unless it’s more than 20% off so it’s been slow going to get all the colors I want in my stash 🥲
Just my 2 cents from someone who’s made amigurumi with it 😅 I love these videos but don’t make clothing so I can rarely relate, and the Juicy Couture is the only one from this list I’ve worked with 😂😅😅
(Prism is looking really nice though, I might have to go find some 😍)

as someone who has used both for scrunchies i agree, i do prefer the feel of how JC works up, i do wish we got more yardage for the price, even if it was still slightly below bernat's. my only qualm was the sparkle version shedding the sparkle bits as i worked it up and i don't wanna deal with that

Big Twist Prism fell into my cart last week to. I picked up those exact colors too. I’ve already worked both of those colors. The family, who doesn’t usually pay attention to what I’m working on all”‘ouuuu’d” and “ahhhh’d”. It’s SOO pretty. While working with it and I agree, I had the same thought about longevity while working with it - we’ll see :)

K+C Yarn has been the #1 reason I shop yarns at JoAnn. I bought out my local when they had the Super Bulky in 2021 and their other Alpaca blend they had last year. I love my LYS, but as someone that makes larger sizes…K+C yarns make making with natural yarn blends more affordable.

I made a hexagon cardigan with big twist prism a few months ago, and its probably my favorite garment I’ve crocheted. The color changes are mesmerizing, and the granny clusters give it just enough breathing room to where its in that sweet spot of not too warm/not too cold. I used the pink shade, but I would definitely come back for that brown.

This is why I limit going to anywhere that has yarn. I end up with way more than I intended at least half of the time, even if I am going there for a very specific thing.
My local small business yarn store has a lot of harder to find in person regionally/locally spun and/or hand dyed yarn. I told her that I always feel like I'm buying too much since I need several boxes for storage at home.
She said, "Oh, all of mine always fits in a one box....my husband also tells me to stop calling our house a box." 😂
On a more serious note, it's nice to see Big Twist in general get at least a somewhat positive review. Back when I started crocheting and not knowing better, I ended up shopping a sale at Joann. I got several skeins of a pink/black colorway that seemed okay. Turns out it was scratchy as hell when I started working with it and it's also how I learned non-natural fibers or yarns without something mixed in are typically a no-go for me. Eventually, I ended up making cat blankets out of all of it which they love and it helped me learn some new techniques.
I've been called a yarn snob here and there as I tend to go towards the more "spendy" yarns (i.e. not Red Heart Super Saver). I've found that if I'm going to put in hours of work, I want it to be something I want to use all the time or the person I'm giving it to wants to use. Sales are great to help cut costs and big box stores carrying these types of yarns is a really great place for people to safely try yarns that they otherwise would see as outside their price range.

I just bought like 13 big twist 1 pound skeins on line because they were only $6.99 and I've been making the beaded weight blankets. The beads definitely need to be the expensive part of the project, and they totally are😂
That big twist Rave has been on my list for the slime color with the black and the pink with black. The unicorn color was very pretty, and the stitch you did with it was also gorgeous. My jaw dropped when you mentioned the price of the small balls by kxc. They were beautiful, but not in my budget. The prism is so pretty, too!! Coming from a maker that uses red heart most of the time, I would readily pick big twist regular worsted over them even though red heart has the superior color choices. Big twist is softer. I'm a "baller" on a budget, and I give away most of my projects. To me, color is the most important. I work in optical, so I have some "hard" hands. I do feel the difference when I am making with superior materials, though. Thank you for all you do! You are an amazing maker! Lysm!!❤

17:34 : that technique is called corespinning. you use an already spun yarn and spin it against its ply. as you are spinning, you add the blended top over the yarn and it sticks. this technique is also how you spin beehives. coils and you can even add flowers into your yarn.
Most "single ply" yarn that is commercially available uses this technique.
Single ply yarn is unstructured. The twist has nothing to twist against, such as another ply, which is why the yarn isn't strong on it s own. However, it really depends on the fiber content and how it is spun. For example, a single ply yarn made out of a BFL/mulberry silk blend will hold up way better than a single ply yarn made out of 100% merino or polwarth.
The Rave yarn is meant to be like Noro Kureyon it seems.
20:05: prism looks like a classic sport weight hand spun 2 ply yarn. that's how the basic yarn i spin looks when finished. The LYS/ Indie version of this yarn would be Spin Cycle. What world we live in ! Never thought i'd see the type of yarn i make by hand commercially available at a big box store. it is a little disheartening to know that 238 yards of handspun look alike yarn comes out to $8. I just finished plying a yarn of the same weight , 2 ply and everything , (one starnd is variegated purple lavender and the other is a pastel rainbow. falkland and polwarth)...258 yards and no breaks in the yarn. Took me about 7 weeks to finish from start to plying and winding. i just wish folks knew what the yarn they are looking at is trying to emulate. you clearly are aware and it is awesome, that's why i enjoy your videos. but at least i know that the yarn i have lived on a sheep and you can feel it. acrylic is beautiful but it's like filtered water versus spring water.
Thanks again for your videos! you won me over and i subscribed

I am in a prayer shawl ministry group and can’t wait to try Prism. I generally try to stay away from wool because elderly and infirm may have sensitive skin or be unable to hand wash/dry a wool garment so looking for the softest acrylic or cotton blend is my goal. I find the key to getting the best drape from these fibers is experimenting with different stitches and hook sizes to see which gives the best results. I rarely go with what is recommended on the label. Also with a lot of shawl/wrap patterns being in sport or lighter weight yarn, when I use DK or worsted the garment comes out larger giving the wearer plenty of wrap around to snuggle into when the extra warmth is desired. Much thanks, Toni for making my yarn search easier.

I’m making a c2c with the rave in the neon pink with black and the neon green with black. Starting and ending with the pink blocking the green in the Center. I’m on my last cake and it looks phenomenal. Once you wash the rave it loses some of its stiffness and scratchiness. I’ve already made a blanket in the colour way safety cone. It’s, bright…

I agree that Big Twist Rave can be difficult to crochet with, but I would recommend you try knitting with it! I'm knitting up a top-down raglan sweater and I'm in LOVE with how its turning out! Its the perfect thickness and softness for the one cold winter day we get here in Texas lol

Oh my goodness, I am glad I didn't pick up big twist yarn for a blanket for my soon to be niece. I just couldn't get over that you couldn't dry it in a dryer. I am newer to crocheting so I try to stick with yarns that are 'machine washable and dryable' and since the blanket is for a 3-year-old I can only imagine how annoyed my brother would be if I gave him a blanket that had to 'lay flat to dry'

Wow I really liked the juicy couture granny square. It looked like it was stone or plaster texture. The granny stitches with that yarn made it look like seashell plaster work. I thought it was great. Probably just the color though. I don't think it would look as good in the bright pink.

Frequent cotton yarn knitter here: I've also found myself reaching for k+c a LOT lately. I've had a couple of problems with their essential cotton (mostly the fact that they changed their label briefly and were selling skeins with glue soaked in but they've fixed that) but overall I LOVED it and ended up turning the t-shirt I made with it into a full dress. I'm also currently knitting a "summer sweater" with their hand-dyed essential cotton (could NOT pass up these colors) and it is just lovely.
The biggest issue I've found with k+c yarns is that they struggle to equalize their dye lots which is a HUGE issue with the widespread distribution . Basically, a store with 9 skeins can have skeins from 3-5 dye lots easily and if you aren't working a project that can work with/around that then you need to make sure you're checking your dye lots. For the dress I made this was a non issue for me because, even though my 4 or so dye lots were wildly different in a very obvious way, I was using something with a ton of colors anyway (Essential cotton ground) so it just looks intentional and I love it. For the shirt I'm making now, I started getting some weird pooling in columns because one end of the skein was dyed a bit too lightly in some segments. I ended up having to frog it back and work from a center pull instead but it's doing okay now.
Overall, the dye issues are the same one's you'll get with most variegated yarns so they're easy enough to work with, but I know some folks really cannot stand that so make sure if y'all buy their yarn you check the dye lots if that's something you don't like. I love the brand though.

I'm generally a big fan of velvet and chenille yarn for plushies, but I have to agree about the yarn here! i had to re-do a simple part 3 times before i could finish it without the yarn falling apart. glad it got it on sale for around 4$ instead of full price.

I **JUST** got back from Joann and now I may have to go back! That t-shirt and the Prism yarn are especially calling my name-I can just imagine the bags I could make with them. It would also be fun to try the Starlight Basket with the Lazy Days yarn.

Joann got some Eddie Bauer yarn in and the weight 2 cotton is DIVINE like I made a top out of it and it is so smooth and soft. It is also almost 600 yards for $10, but it has been on major sale so I'm about to buy it in every color lol

I am so excited to see this! Regular tshirt is killing my hands!!! I saw Joann has Big Twist tshirt; but haven't been in the store! Glad to see your big 10 review! I will definitely check it out!! I was traumatized by Loops and Threads Facets; so I have major hate of roving yarn. It was beautiful, I bought 16 skeins and returned all but 4 (the 2 that were used, though a huge amount of the yarn ended up in the trash, and 2 because the color was too outstanding to let go, but it remains unused).

There’s lots of other yarns at JoAnn I would like to see a review on. What about the Eddie Bauer line - Cozy Cabin, Organic Cotton and Wool-paca? Also, Carrusel and Lion Brand Lattice and Forever Fleece. There’s also Bernat Maker? I may have a brand wrong but the names are right. Have you reviewed any of these yarns in other Yarn Snob reviews? Please let me know?

As a first time crocheter, I myself would try each of those skeins to find out which ones I enjoy. I've been using lion brand wool ease recycled from Wal-Mart and love how smooth I can stitch with it. Loops & threads soft classic is 100% acrylic and I haven't had any issues with crocheting a daisy granny square blanket. I've stitched with Coboo by lion brand which is cotton and rayon from bamboo, it was interesting for me to figure out which hook and stitch I could use with it to like it. At first I kept splitting the strands and got frustrated so it took me a few more months to come to the aforementioned conclusion. I've stitched with the mandala yarn by lion brand and loved using it doubled. I have one other I tried but can't remember brand name. It is an ombre fuzzy color. Thank you for sharing your reviews.
