this is how I set my Subaru up for driving on the outer banks. results may differ depending on tire choice/size ect but this is what I have found works for me. when I was thinking about getting an outback for my next vehicle It was important for me to be able to drive on the soft sand of the outer Banks. in this video I explain a few things about driving on the beach and how the traction control affects how the vehicle performed. I find that setting the tires to 18psi drastically helps the performance of the vehicle in the sand. I also find that leaving the traction control OFF helps the vehicle to maintain a forward moment needed to be able to get up the access ramps on the outer Banks. With the traction control ON the vehicle would not make it up the access ramp (would not get stuck but was not able to make it up the ramp) due to stalling the wheels rotation.
vehicle is a 2015 Subaru outback 2.5i premium.

Just bought an outback. Excited about all the things I have never been able to do in my previous cars, but don't know anything about driving off-road. Perfect video, thanks for uploading!
Good luck!! It's all about TIRE PRESSURE 🎉
I was exactly looking for this kind of video. Thanks for sharing it
😁 you are welcome!
As was I.
Makes me # 3, if we're counting. I asked Subaru whether Dual Function X-Mode could be programmed into the Limited, after sale - crickets. I think you get the same thing with Single Function X-Mode and TRAC / VDC - OFF.
Awesome! I used to take my 4Runner down there all the time. There are videos on my channel. I sold the 4Runner and got a Limited Crosstrek cause I got sick of the piss poor fuel economy. All you gotta do is air down and you're golden. My new Limited is kinda a pavement princess so I am undecided about taking out on the beach. Not that I think it will get stuck but it's just too nice and shiny to abuse so soon. I did Corolla a few times in a Highlander so ain't gonna be any issues in a Subaru which has a superior AWD system no doubt.
I used to drive my Honda Ridgeline all over that beach never aired down, no problem.
Thank you, i never thought i could take my 07 outback to the beach. Now im probably gonna try it after a 2inch lift kit
Tire pressure!!! It's the key!😁
interesting , keep the momentum up on sand and dont go into the wet sand because it has really soft spots in places where you can sink, subarus have amazing 4wd systems beyond what you might think they are capable of but you can still screw it up just like any other vehicle, thanks i love my impreza but i need something with more clearance so this is the next step
nice video.. 👍🏻👍🏻
THANX! 😃
Respect for subies!!!
I have a lot of people say "Oh it's just all wheel drive . You can't really take it off road ." I respond "Really , go to RUclips and put in Subaru
Outback in mud ". The next time I see them they are very quiet . My 2009 Impreza does pretty good , My 2024 Outback does much much
better , but my 1967 IH Scout is boss . Truth is the 2024 Outback may be the best but I'm not willing to try it in a new car lol ..
We have an 09 Outback fitted with Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail and no lift. I am an experienced beach driver and have been dying to take it on the beach. Some of the spots we go to have deep soft sand and big ruts from the campers driving on the beach.
Hey mate how did you get rid of the sand in engine bay as the approaching angle is too small? I took my brand new Outback to the beach, found no problem except the excessive amount of sand
Ambiance noise. 🥊🥊 n 🌊
The part about the traction control is really insightful It explains why those Subaru VDC traction control demonstrations on rollers or a diagonal work: 2 of the tires are still on a high grip surface, unlike snow or sand. Which instances do you prefer to keep traction control on while being off road, if any?
Thanx for watching and the kind words. I typically just drive it “as is” unless going into sand. In which case I turn off traction control off. It sometimes has to think for a few seconds if u get at least 2 tires off the ground but eventually the car will figure it out and pull itself through.
Its best for subarus to get a good set of tires and maybe a small lift they will breeze on sand easy. The wrxs sti or any other turbo model is best as you get extra power. I took my subaru legacy gt on the beach all i did was turn traction off and air down to 15psi down hatteras.
Tire pressure is key for sure!
Im going to carova in my forester in a week. I ended up taking my rally armors off im afraid I might rip em off if I get into some deep sand lol
They are very pliable and there is a low risk of them getting hung up on anything. I would think they should be fine to leave on. They are built for rally right?? 😁
True true
How did the Outback handle seems like it’s pretty good I’m alittle nervous
I've never gotten stuck before. let the air down and turn off track. 👍😎
Sounds good 👍
Great video !! Is the ground clearance still 8.7 inches or did you increase it. Thank you, again exactly what I was lookin for - thanks
My Subaru has all factory suspension. The bigger tires may give a slight bit of ground clearance. Tire pressure is of massive importance off road. U will be surprised at the difference it makes in most situations. ✌️
Thank you 🙏🏽
What air compressor do you recommend?
The one at the gas station! 😝 air is free at the outer banks
Did you have X-Mode On?
No, I do not use x mode on the beach
What tires have you installed on your car ?
Falken wildpeak AT trail. Love'em!
What about the Ascents?
I can only imagine they do just as well since they use a very similar awd system. If u have the package that has the bigger wheels then just air down to 15ish psi and it shouldn’t have any issues. In my experience LOW tire pressures and momentum are usually the main factors that keep u out of trouble.
what tires do you have on?
Falken wildpeak AT trail
I've seen asphalt that's softer than that sand 😂.
There are some videos with an outback in Chile, where it's doing a 3 point turn in deep soft sand.
Any awd car can access that hard sand not really a true test of awd
Spoken like someone who has never driven on the beach before.
@@unclemeat7310 you must not know subaru lol or other awd with 50/50
In some deep sand situations you need 4LO, AWD wont cut it.
@@josepichardo2659 Subaru has some features to try and match this. Namely X-mode. and in the 2019s and up there is a Lo, on the shifter. I think X-mode is an excellent feature, but Subaru is losing money by not jumping into the 4wd realm. They're already the most reliable vehicle on the road, so maybe they're afraid of fixing what isn't broken. Either way, I love my Subaru Forester, and I'm not too scared of taking it off-road.
