First let me state that I'm single and I pay 664.00 a month for my health insurance. It's gone up every year, The positive thing about it is hospitalization is completely taken care of. My prescriptions are fairly well covered some require a $36.00 copay. Last week I payed $132.00 for my Fardiga. The doctor wrote a ninty day prescription so it would would have cost divide by three for monthly cost. Fortunately most of what I copay costs me $32.00. often the electronic voice that phones me it's ready for pick up isn't on the same beam. I'll show up to pickup my prescription and the pharmacy says it's not ready. Don't know if your son said anything about the cost but I can tell you that you have to lucky when talking to the pharmacist. Waited five days for the Fardiga and one of the pharmacists said,"Next time call it on earlier". I almost pulled a Karen on him. I asked isn't 5fays am adequate length of time? When I checked in on the ,5th day I asked how many days I could go without the medication. A different pharmacist said if it didn't come in the next day they would figure out with the doctors advise what they would do. If a pharmacist doesn't know what to do they should reply ,,_,I don't know but I'll find out" one should not dismiss anyone with asthma. Sorry I took the long way around to get to curse. This a mean thing for me to say but , may those who could have and should have but did nothing some day what it feels like not to be able to take in oxygen or expel carbon dioxide and feel like they're drowning! That's what a bad attack feels like.

Fact is the cost of pharm in the U.S. is astronomical and that is what needs to be fixed along with the general cost of our sick care. User based charged would probably change a lot of bad habits in this country, Those with a chronic health issue since birth or those of us who never get sick shouldn't pay through the nose for others poor choices. In Sweden we pay about 250 US dollars a year for ALL medicins. After that EVERYTHING is FREE for the rest of the year. And all healthcare is totally free for kids under 20 y.o. and all prescribed medicins are totally free for kids under 18 y. o.
For all kinds of healthcare you pay about 25$ per visit at a doctor. And when/if you've reached about 140$ the rest of ANY kind of healthcare the rest of the year is totally free. Only exception : if you stay/live at a hospital for some time you need to pay about 10$ a night for your bed/room. But that includes 3 meals a day, so....
As an example my three childbirths costed me about 25 $ (with two of them I had already reached the maximum healthcarefee, so everything was free) and 40 $ for 2 nights stay with each of the two of them plus 60 $ for one of them, where I had to stay a little longer at the hospital due to the c-section (which was included in the 25$ doctorsfee). So as a total for my three children ; 125 $ which included 10 nights at the hospital.
    Ambulance is ALWAYS free.
I have also had cancer multiple times, with multiple surgeries and chemo and other treatments, and plastic surgery to restore my chest area. Only paying 140 $ a year.
The american way is mindblowing to me.....

He was a gamer.......stayed up all night streaming on line gaming.......I missed the part about the job that the boy had or work? Why didn't he have 500 bucks for the drug? Why didn't the parents help him buy the drug? This is merely to absolve the parents of guilt......they are guiltily of not helping their son....so they have to blame someone else. The parent's say he was "independent" and they told him to "ask questions". My brother is a pulmonologist. He told me that one out of ten asthma patients WILL die of an asthma attack even under the constant care of a specialist MD and staff! Asthma is a very complex disease. These deaths are common! It’s not just the expense loss of just one inhaler. It takes a competent team of specialty MDs, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians and overall health professionals to keep these patients alive and well! Even psychiatrists are needed to help with the stress of these attacks and help to prevent any emotional or environmental triggers!
One inhaler didn’t cause this beautiful young man’s death! It’s our rotten health care system that failed this man.

My condolences to this family for losing their son. It’s 2025, his death was so preventable. There are so many other asthma meds that are cheaper and easily available to prevent such a tragedy. Can’t believe they could charge such an outrageous amount for one disk - an outdated medication here in Seoul. I grew up in Texas and was diagnosed with asthma when I was a teen. I used to be allergic to everything - cats, rabbits, birds, certain breeds of dogs. Then I moved to Seoul and realized how much cheaper my asthma medication was even without insurance. Now I’ve been living asthma free for decades by taking only two pills and one puff from a special inhaler daily. No one but an asthmatic knows that helpless feeling when your body betrays you and takes away your ability to take in air. It’s the most agonizing seconds until you can finally breathe in a few puffs. I can totally imagine how the last seconds must have been for Cole. That’s why it breaks my heart cuz he knew at some point, getting that next breath of air wasn’t going to come and his last moments would have been sheer panic. He had his whole life ahead of him. This wasn’t a car accident or something out of our hands. This was sheer greed. His family should make them pay dearly for robbing their son of life.

Australian here. The Australian Government has for about sixty or seventy years now negotiated with drug companies as part of the philosophy of caring for the health of all the population (and not just citizens) in the form of the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) where prescription medication is heavily subsidised according to need and even without being needy. The price our government pays for pharmaceuticals is bargained fairly with the drug companies and we have a government-sponsored single payer system. It seems to work ok but we need to improve it. We do observe the sometimes outrageous prices Americans have to pay for some pharmaceuticals and commiserate. To some extent the American public is subsidising global pharmaceutical sales. This is not right.

Unfortunately donald trump has reversed Joe Biden's orders that allowed negotiations between the pharmaceutical companies and Medicare/medicaid recipients and left it up to the drug companies - trump also repealed the Biden order that put caps on things like inhalers and insulin etc..at just $35 - So now there is no limit and they can charge whatever they want - We were actually making progress (not even close to enough), thanks to Joe Biden and since trump took office 3 weeks ago, we've been set back 20+ years - Not just with healthcare but everything - This is a tragedy on so many levels and unfortunately, this is only the beginning - I am sorry for this Wisconsin family and for all American families that are suffering under our current healthcare system - It's all about greed here and if you're middle/lower class, there is no out for us when it comes to healthcare - it's literally - pay your bills or treat your health condition - And yet, those same Americans put this guy back in office - And we could be free from outrageous health costs, if we followed Canada or Australia's system - But their greed does not allow them to - Sorry I went on for so long, i'm just outraged by this preventable death and am so tired of fighting a losing battle - How the US was the "envy" of the world for the last 50 years is beyond me - I'm glad that people are finally seeing the reality of our country and we don't stand for what we say we do, not as a whole anyway - If I was in any of the amazing countries/continent such as Canada, France, U.K., Japan, Australia, Ireland etc.., then I'd be happy as a clam and feel grateful that I wasn't a part of the USA...

I worked in healthcare for years as a lawyer/administrator for three different health plans, the last of which was a not-for-profit health plan with an exclusive contract with an integrated healthcare delivery network. The first two were for profit, large corporate health plans. I saw situations like this young man’s with the two for profit health plans, i.e., serious life threatening denial of care situations (on multiple occasions, but fortunately not resulting in death although some situations resulting in serious health complications). I did not experience these situations while working for the not-for-profit plan (where I worked for 11 years). In my view, the biggest problem with the U.S. healthcare system is that most of the key players in it (hospitals, health plans/insurers, PBMs, etc.) are large, for profit corporations. Their primary obligation is to their shareholders to ensure continuing profitable performance. It is not to ensure available and accessible necessary medical care to the people enrolled in those health plans. It is also a very inefficient system. There are simply too many of these for profit players carving up the system, each trying to extract their bit of profit. This results in too many unnecessary administrative layers with concomitant administrative costs. The “free market system” in the case of healthcare delivery does not result in an efficient allocation of resources. The U.S. system is not the best in the world because it leaves too many behind, is too costly, in too often results in needless death .
