How to Install an Android Head-unit in Your Car - ATOTO S8 Ultra Plus Review

  • Here’s how to install an Android Tablet head unit in your car!
    Installing a new stereo in your car will increase connectivity and bring your older vehicle to modern standards by adding features such as Bluetooth audio, WiFi, 5G internet connectivity, navigation, gesture controls, birds eye view and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
    The unit installed in this video is an Atoto S8 Ultra with a 10.1” screen that fits inside a double DIN format. The vehicle demonstrated is a 2011 Toyota Sienna. Furthermore, the Atoto rear backup camera with 360 degree panoramic image stitching, front DVR dash camera and OBD II reader are demonstrated.
    Installation of the headunit is similar to other double DIN units, which involves partial disassembly of the dashboard. Once removed, you’ll need a double DIN installation bracket kit and a wiring harness to convert your vehicle’s specific wiring harness to work with most aftermarket units.
    Additionally, you’ll need a steering wheel control unit and a vehicle specific harness if you want to retain OEM controls. Finally, you’ll need tools such as a soldering iron and heat shrink to make the harness and basic hand tools to remove and install the unit and run wires into the dash.
    Overall the Atoto S8 Ultra Plus, while pricey, has a lot of cool features that make aftermarket units very competitive with today’s OEM offerings. Having an Android Tablet installed in your car means you can install all apps available in the Google Play store as if it were your own phone. Atoto specific features such as the 360 degree panoramic camera, front DVR camera and OBDII reader work well. Some areas to improve on include the bracket’s adjustibility for tilting it downward, Bluetooth connectivity quirks, and adding a rear dash cam functionality.

    When I bought my first in car dvd player. I didn't hook the parking sense wire. And i spent 3months trying to figure out why it would play any dvd.
    Then i read the manual carefully and found out that parking brake needs to be pulled to enable dvd playback.
    So i just mounted a toggle switch under the dash to turn trigger the parking sense and watch dvd while driving.
    This was in 2009 and a single din sony headunit with dvd + dolby 5.1. i had 3 monitors in car. That would work on the same video feed from the headunit.

    I’m working installing a pc inside my car. It’s gonna have a 7 inch touch screen and gonna have a SIM card installed in the system. It’s not gonna be full of features as this unit but for a total cost of 85$ for the entire build, I’ll be happy to have it done at this price

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Год назад

      Awesome. Is it based on raspberry Pi?

    • @EnglishGamer2019
      @EnglishGamer2019 Год назад

      @@speedkar99 I wanted mine to be a capable system. I’m breaking the key components down in the following paragraph.
      The main brains of the system is from an old laptop motherboard that has 8gb ram and a 3rd generation i7 in it. It currently has 256gb of onboard storage but I’m gonna upgrade that in a Frankenstein way (more on that later).
      The display is a 7 inch 1024x600 IPS touch panel (built for raspberry pi systems) that solved the huge issue of input of the system being mostly hands-free for 27$ (including shipping)
      The laptop mobo needs 19.5v power and I need a 5v rail to power some other stuff. So I got myself a 1500w (I didn’t mistype) DC to DC boost converter for only 16$ from a trusted source and I got a buck converter as a bonus (0-40v at 9A max). The boost converter will power the mobo while the buck converter tee-off from the output to power the screen and some other stuff (more on that later)
      For Storage, it has a 256gb msata ssd (it’s old and getting one is expensive these days) which isn’t much if I want to fit as many movies and other stuff in it. So I got an msata to Sata adapter (it brings the Sata data line from it) that I can plug into a normal 480gb Sata ssd that I have laying around. Now that buck converter will provide the 5v power the drive needs to run properly. The adapter (or converter) costed 2$ and now I have almost double the storage.
      For containing everything, I got myself some transparent acrylic glass that I’ll cut to shape and fit it inside and behind the center console. If you’re worried about thermals, don’t worry. I’ll figure out the venting when I get to work and the mobo will draw 30w under full load; so it’s not much heat generated and the system won’t go that far in general.
      For the screen, this entire contraption will go into a 1996 Toyota Corolla AE110 (Thailand variant) where the radio sits. Since the radio is single din, I’m gonna make a drawer system where the screen be going in and out of the gap where the radio used to sit. The screen is as wide as the single din space but I’ll have to make some room for the wires that come out from the sides (I’ll deal with it later). The screen will flip up like a laptop screen while using and get tucked back in there when not needed.
      For the I/O of the system, I’ll get a usb 3.0 hub that uses external power to power the hub and use the buck converter to power it. The 5V at 9A Max is more than enough to charge at least two phones (my target) and have input for more.
      For navigation, I’m still split between using a Wi-Fi hotspot for internet or delete the Wi-Fi card for a gsm card of the motherboard and let it have its own internet. Then I can use google maps and YT as much as I want.
      I’ve already done a dry run to see if everything works and they do. There’s no proper documentation out there for people who want an infotainment system that is more powerful than a raspberry pi based one. So I’m doing this on my own. Wish me luck.

    Bluetooth2 is not a second bluetooth channel - it is an accessory to bluetooth to allow data over bluetooth to replace wifi/4G data source. It does not work very well, a worthless feature. How do I know? I tried to allow data over bluetooth using my S21 phone and Atoto head unit. It sort of works BUT you have to open settings and re-connect the BT2 EVERY time you want to use it. Easier to set your phone as a wifi hotspot and connect to the ATOTO using both BT and WIFI - this works seamlessly.

      @@speedkar99 When you use wifi to run android auto, you don't need BT or wifi to run anything on the head unit, since the head unit is then just a monitor. I don't get the practicality of using android auto when you have a head unit that runs navigation on it's own, can get live traffic via wifi tether to the phone, and BT tether for calls. In the case of an older car without a wireless charging pad, cable android auto makes some sense since the phone gets slow charged.

    The reason your toothbrush didn't work on this unit is you forgot to put your gloves on and drain the oil from it using your brother's shirt and your wife's old dress to prevent any spills to the floor. And another tip. When you solder two or more wires together try not to press them against the big metal surface (vice) as it will take away heat from the soldering point and you may end up with cold joints and bad connections. Also soldering will be much easier.

      @@speedkar99 Hey, so I have a question I wonder if you can help me with; I am in the process of swapping a Gen 5.5 Camry cluster to my Gen 5, and right now, I'm facing issues with the ABS light turning on since my car didn't came with ABS, and parking brake light staying on no matter if I disengage my parking brake or not.
      I'm pretty much scratching my head now because I don't know what else to do, what do you think? 😅

      For the screen to tilt downwards/backwards without cutting the bracket

      What do you think of this advice? In your vid this got me, I thought it would tilt down enough for my Honda. Would this work to maximize downward tilt?

    Can you do a tutorial on how to replace an infotainment system with a regular radio. Infotainment touch screens are a cancer on auto interiors. The interface is distracting, dumb looking and there are already too many screens in daily life.

      Do "regular" aftermarket radios exist?

    • @mbox314
      @mbox314 Год назад

      @speedkar99 Of couse! But do they have aftermarket radios that can replace all the features which are often embeded in an infotainment system? I do not know of any but if they did have them that would be very welcome.

    Biggest problem I have with that thing: it's Android 😂 which means Google. Google changed from "don't be evil" to "be as evil as possible" 😢
