The "stalactite dildo" that made you chuckle was the handiwork of the boys in the prop department who played a practical joke on William Shatner in 1966. Shatner never noticed it, the director didn't notice, nobody noticed and it made it onto the final cut and has kept us all laughing these past 57 years and counting!

Maybe Shat didn't notice, but he seemed to hesitate grabbing it!

When I first saw this, the story line surprised and even felt creeped out by it. Such a well written episode. "What Are Little Girls Made Of" title references an old nursery rhyme 🤔what are little girls made of....they're made of sugar and spice and everything nice 🤗 Wasn't anything nice about these androids. I would list this in my top 5 TOS episodes. Loved your reaction.
In the western movie, "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid", Ted Cassidy played one of the "hole in the wall" gang members who picked a knife fight with Paul Newman. Was great to see Ted without monster makeup on.

4:41 "That's the _big_ guy! And he's _really big!"_
This is the same actor who played Lurch on _The Addams Family_ sitcom which ran from 1964 to 1966.

Always enjoyed the original series growing up, the messages along with the adventures. Ted Cassidy played the large android, Lurch from the Adams Family. Nice to meet someone else who enjoys SciFi for the same reason. AI is a concern.

3:14 Mark! "Andrea"! She is featured in every "Star Trek" calendar that I've seen thus far that shows off the beautiful females of the show!
Now, come to think of it, how soon was this episode made after the collision of the luxury ocean liners "Stockholm" and "Andre Doria"? 🤔 Not even the "Seinfeld" episode about it recognized that the latter ship was named for an Italian man, not a woman! 😮
I'm guessing that it like how the movie "Splash!" inspired mothers to give their daughters the boy name "Madison" meaning "Son of Maude" in that no one did the research and just like how something sounded! 🤔

2:24 Mark! Seeing her runaway reminded me of something! Maybe it's a Canadian quality trait, because you and Jen Murray have so far not complained about the sexy minidress uniforms, and called them "sexist" because the men "get to wear pants" and so on and so forth! So refreshing! 😃
The actresses from the original series have had to deal with the pesky questions and attitudes of those that don't understand the 1960s concepts of Femininity and all of that. The people that belong to the denominations in which girls and women don't use cosmetics and have ankle-length skirts or dresses, don't go to conventions, as they also don't have televisions. But sometimes it seems like they are there, when you hear the rants! 😮

15:35 Mark! Ruk was vaporized by the "Mark 1 Hand PHASER" before later generations of artists had to make it visually complicated and changing it from what you just saw to "disintegration" and such. Probably because they saw one too many commercials for yhe "Vicks Vaporiser"? Or even used their products? Then they couldn't associate harm with the term? 🤔🤷‍♂️

Greetings from the world of yesterday ...
Here's the most interesting thing about this episode: Majel Barrett.
She plays Nurse Chapel throughout the series. If you may remember, she played Number One in "The Cage" and would later play Lwaxanna Troi in TNG. At this point, Majel was Roddenberry's mistress. But here's the weird backstory.
When "The Cage" was screened for NBC, one of the execs asked Herb Solow who was keeping Majel ("keeping" being a euphemism for "mistress").
Solow was GR's boss, the exec in charge of Desilu's TV shows. If you watch the end credits, his name always appears in the last card over an image of the spooky Balok puppet from "The Corbomite Maneuver." It was an intentional joke that Solow himself found amusing.
Solow's contribution to _Star Trek_ is all but forgotten. Initially, Roddenberry had screened the pilot on his own for CBS, without Solow. CBS was the show's best bet, because they'd had _I Love Lucy_ for many years. They had a good relationship with Lucille Ball, star of _Lucy_ and owner of Desilu Studios , so it was the best place to try and sell it.
Roddenberry blew it big time. Solow wasn't happy that GR had done it without his knowledge. They next screened it for NBC, but with Solow as the front man. Solow had just come out of NBC to work for Desilu and had worked with the NBC execs for years. They all liked Solow.
They hated Majel. They didn't think she was a good actress and didn't want to get into the drama inherent in a lead who's sleeping with the producer. They insisted she had to go.
They also had reservations about Spock appearing too Satanic and alienating viewers in the Bible Belt (it no longer exists). However, they were willing to give that character a chance.
But Majel was an absolute no-go.
For his entire life, GR claimed that the network didn't believe a woman could be in command of anything. He claimed that they were a bunch of neanderthals.
Herb Solow said that this was nonsense. The then-head of NBC said not only was it nonsense, NBC had an explicit policy to get more women in lead roles.
The problem wasn't that Majel was a woman. The problem was that she was sleeping with the producer, and there are about 1.21 giga-ways that it could go sideways and endanger the production.
GR knew this: Solow told him directly. So now GR had to go to Majel and tell her that the role he wrote specifically for her was being cut.
GR was never good with personal confrontations. My theory -- and this is just me -- is that he told Majel that he tried and tried, but he just couldn't get those mysogynous bastards to see the light.
A total lie, but one he told for the remainder of his life.
But again, that's just my theory based on what I've pieced together from all the various accounts.
The "dildo" stalactite ultimately became a joke. Occasionally someone would hand the prop to women, who'd laugh their asses off at the sheer ridiculous size of the thing.
One other minor thing: Lucille Ball is sometimes considered "the grandmother of _Star Trek_ ." She green-lit the pilots against the advice of other Desilu execs.
In fact, on the final day of filming "The Cage", they were running over time, and there was a wrap party getting set up in a neighboring soundstage.
Lucy was on set, probably as a message that every minute they shot, the more over-budget they were getting.
Ultimately, as they finished shooting, Lucy grabbed a broom and started sweeping down the sets.
    *Christine Chapel will return.*

Lyrics for 'What Are Little Girls Made Of?'
What are little boys made of?
What are little boys made of?
    Frogs and snails,
    And puppy-dogs' tails;
That's what little boys are made of.
What are little girls made of?
What are little girls made of?
    Sugar and spice,
    And all that's nice;
That's what little girls are made of.

The title always seemed to me like a weak connection, too. There’s the commonly recited song, “What are little girls made of? … what are little boys made of?” I have guessed it was pointing to superficial resemblances to humans aren’t real deep down.

Howdy! 🤠 I enjoy this episode, but it did a very big disservice to people by conditioning us to think of the word "android" to refer to all automatons or robots that are people-shaped as being "androids" rather than just the one who look like males! It didn't help when the Japanese used a pun against us by creating "Ann Droid"! 😂 But actually the female-shaped ones are "gynoids" and one of them makes fun of people that mistakenly refer to her as an "android" and she does so in a passive aggressive way! So the people seem extra confused! 😂😅

I REALLY like this episode, while watching it I pretty much figured out the head guy was an android. This is also one of the few episodes centering around Nurse Chapel ( a very rare occurrence in TOS ) but was glad her character got some-SHINE-and good amount of screen time.

Bob Justman tells an amusing story about Sherry Jackson's very skimpy costume in the lovely book "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story". I got a hardback copy for like $10 off Amazon years ago. Highly recommended, if you can get a copy. I always enjoyed this episode. Season 1 was the strongest season (to me), and this was one of the stronger episodes (again, to me). Bob tells another good story about having the Ruk actor in full makeup show up in Gene's office when a guy was there trying to sell Gene a suit, LOL. Imagine walking in on that!

Notes: "Digger of the Mind"?! 😂
Hmm. It is because of "Star Trek" that I don't have any qualms or fears about Artificial Intelligence. It is because of "Idiocracy" though, that I have concerns about the rise of stupid people! 😮 Though thanks to their thoughtless recreational style of procreation, some form of people will continue to exist. 😮 Quite the paradox. 🤷‍♂️

Kirk had very few options, but he took advantage of the one he did have. He tried to implant in himself (for that moment) a (superficial) racist bigotry/annoyance against Spock, hoping that this sentiment would be imprinted onto the android Kirk.
When the android repeated that racist sentiment to Spock, the real Kirk essentially sent a coded message to Spock. Kirk knew that Spock would know, that the real Kirk would NEVER, under any circumstances, use a racist term (‘half breed’) against a shipmate (or anyone) - let alone against Spock.
    ••••
The theme of “the WRONG Kirk” comes up repeatedly in the series. You’ve seen it here, and in ‘The Enemy Within,’ and it occurs a number of other times.
    ••••
“What are little girls made of? Sugar, spice and everything nice,” is part of an old nursery rhyme.
    ••••
Even ignoring AI, our entertainment has been packed, repeatedly, for many decades, with stories about human beings becoming programmed - victimized by bad actors - making them into beings that they don’t choose to be.
    - an episode of Trek, the original series that you’ll view soon enough; also in…
    - ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,’
    - ‘Return from Witch Mountain,’ the Disney film in the 1970s that was the sequel to
    ‘Escape from Witch Mountain’,
    - multiple episodes of “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “The Bionic Woman’, also from the 70s;
    - a two-part episode of the ‘Underdog’ cartoon in the 1960s,
    - the Star Trek TNG episode, ‘The Game’ (with Ashley Judd’s first acting appearance)
    - the 2017 film, "Incredibles 2,"
    - the film, ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’
These are only the ones that immediately come to mind; there are many others.
More stories explore closely related themes, such as replacing the real people with android doubles (programmed entities - also a recurring theme of the two ‘Bionic’ shows). Or, replacing people with doubles originating from other sources (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “John Carpenter’s The Thing”).
While humans do have free will, there is an uncomfortable reality about the real-life programmability of our species.

11:26 Mark. Really? That's a matter of debate! If a person's enjoyable experiences are more than the negative experiences, it would seem that way to some, and to others a, "And then what?" 🤔
Afterlife? Reincarnation? What?! Those to me seem like other expressions of Immortality. 🤔🧐
If you only believe that death ends it all, Life it seems like a waste of time, energy, and effort to some. 🤔
