Years later Slytherins have a bad rep that they can't escape no matter how hard they try. So maybe they become the thing everyone thinks they already are. Now imagine an orphan who is clearly hurt and broken (not saying Tom Riddle wasn't bad) came to Hogwarts and gets told he's evil. Fast forward a little bit, he finds out he's the great great great maybe even more great grandson of Salazar Slytherin the so called evil Hogwarts founder. You would probably be upset and totally go to the dark side with everything going on. Children are really influential if you are violent they will be violent, if they are told muggleborns are wastes of space they are going to believe that even if it's just for awhile. I'm not trying to justify his actions later on because he could have been the bigger person and get over it but maybe just maybe he was driven to be evil because of the horrible prejudice against Slytherins and his days in the orphan edge. I get you need a bad guy to ever story in some shape or form but if the prejudice against Slytherin didn't exist maybe it wouldn't have been Tom Riddle, maybe it would have been someone else, maybe it would still be Tom Riddle, maybe it would have saved hundreds of lives because people could have helped the poor suffering Slytherin children and possibly ended this before it even began. But then again we wouldn't have these books, or maybe we would but better.

Unpopular opinion here, but I am 100% certain that Grindelwald would have been a Gryffindor. Sure he has ambition and leadership skills, he has a goal and is determinate. BUT he is a Gryffindor because he was more bold than cunning. He was more idealistic than he was realistic. The man was known to be a sadistic playful leader, not a sadistic analytical one. He made passionate speeches, knew how to make himself appear as a hero meant to save wizard-kind, even trying to appear benevolent to his ennemies, but he didn't have a Slytherin approach. Slytherin will get either full on political OR will do everything under the radar until they get the right opportunity. Grindelwald was not subtle: he plunged both worlds in a war and he would threaten governments directly instead of infiltrating them with his people. Yep, definitely a Gryffindor villain if I've ever seen one!
I love your take on this! Although, and here comes a hardcore 100% unpopular opinion, the truest Gryffindor villain of them all was Dumbledore. No wonder he and Grindelwald were friends. Dumbledore's approach was that of a Gryffindor trying to be a Slytherin in a way. He thought himself cunning, but he preferred bold plans and running into things passionately instead of understated. Voldemort wanted no one to know he was back, he wanted to work under the radar. Dumbledore was straight up "hey I'm the head of the Order of the Phoenix" and "oh yes I helped with that whole Philosopher Stone deal". Also, thank you for your interesting and thoughtful commentary. As for good slytherins, there's Merlin, Andromeda Tonks, Horace Slughorn, and Regulus Black (Draco, Narcissa, and Snape are in kind of a grey area). But JK really goes out of her way to paint all of the good guys as gryffindors and all the bad guys as slytherins. Personally I think Dumbledore should have been a slytherin.
horace and regulus black are also grey. first of all we did not see the actual reason for regulus's change, he is said to have beean a fanboy of voldamort his sudden change occured due to his love for kreature. he was fully happy to join the death eaters while snape joined because he wanted a place to belong and to feel accepted (jk rowling said this about snape in an interview) horace slughron is defenitly grey, even though i like him but the fact is he is selfish person who only cares about his life and sees his favourite students as some sort of assets. i think andromeda tonks is only the white character in the series from slytherin. (merlin character appears outside of the series)

So I am a Gryffindor and my best friend is a Slytherin. We both have tendencies from each others houses, I can be really cunning and ambitious and she can be really brave and passionate. We work really well together, so well that if you mess with either of us it most likely won't end well for you. We also annoy each other a lot but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Me and my other two cousins formed a trio . One of them is a Slytherin and the other one is a Hufflepuff . And I myself am a Ravenclaw . Perhaps it would be fun if all three of us were in the same house . I often imagine ourselves as being good Slytherins .
Hagrid strikes me as more of a Hufflepuff, to be honest. Edit: On the subject of Snape being brave, I want to remind everyone of what the painting of Phineas Nigellus Black once said about this: We Slytherins are brave, yes, but we're not stupid.
So it seems. She certainly is a front runner in my opinion. In the ranking of best slytherins I’d put her second, behind snape but ahead of regulus black. Good point and thank you for commenting !

We might not be the nicest but we do anything to protest people we love (and ourselves because you should care about your safety to)
I do think they sort children to early, because at 11 I did not really have a definitive personality, and when they sort children at that age the only people who will know their true personality is maybe their house mates. However I do agree that Snape was a slytherin through and through.
Draco Malfoy being a loud and brash bully makes no sense, he should know better that him being outwardly hostile will punish Slytherin house. But, honestly that can be explained by JK Rowling wanting him to be a bully, but not understanding she gave Slytherin House traits which clash with his characterisation. Draco would become a social pariah in his house logically if he was so outwardly hostile, costing Slytherin house points. Rowling makes him act so badly, not realizing once again that for him to act so foolishly this makes him look more a Gryffindor than Slytherin. After all, Draco is suppost to be the face we think of when we think of Slytherins, that's how she wrote him. Rowling wanted him to be a Slytherin bully, loudly badmouthing several powerful people, yet be a member of the so called evil house. It makes no sense, Draco should know better that he's up against a system designed to punish his kind - aka, Slytherin House members. We Slytherins would never act so stupidly in front of others, we want to present ourselves as calm, composed, and rational individuals to the outside world. We often mature much faster in this world, to know our place in it, and our worth. That's why so many of us become distant, pessimistic, and weary people. We get hardened from life experiences to be this way, we're often more paranoid of everything. So yeah, JK Rowling wanted to have a cake and eat it too, ignoring our house traits are the polar opposites of how she makes the so called antagonist act. P.s - sorry for my bad English
I think Peter Pettigrew fully belongs in Griffindor for sheer strength of character, the only thing is that it is solely directed towards self-preservation. Most people in Pettigrew's place would have considered suicide, because such an existence is unbearable to most normal people. Also, getting close to Voldemort to give him the information did require some courage on his part because you cannot break the charm with threats or torture.
Wow ..even my fav character is Snape....I actually watched the Harry Potter series for the 1st time lol...in 2 days . Well I really expected Snape to change sides at the end.....but damn ...the storyline was so amazing ✌️✌️
Random but the only actual reason herimone was sorted into griffin doe was because she asked like harry she said in the book that she was supposed to be in ravenclaw
But like really if I was in the battle of Hogwarts I would not go down to dungeons because of that statement from McGonagall Because she said that we should go down but why should we like we are not bad but because of that I would just have gone upstairs and just fought against them and just join the death eaters because she just said that, can you actually understand what I'm saying because I don't know if it was understandable 😂 (I'm a Slytherin if you didn't know by now 😂😂😂😂😂)
Totally understand your point. Personally, with my slytherin sense of self preservation and McGonagall’s statement, I would’ve just left the whole battle out of spite like bye but he’s fix this yourselves not my problem
If they make another harry potter movie. His son should be the main focus and Slytherin should be the main focus as well with a them being good instead. And instead of it being just about Slytherin they make the 4 main characters be best friends from all different houses. Also i understand why they sent Slytherins to the dungeons. Because they would ve been fighting their parents. Killing their parents.
I don't think that's what Rowling is saying by, 'I think we sort to soon'. I took it more literally and I agree. Sorting children at eleven is very early. This is just or before their bodies are going through all these changes and will be shaping their personalities. Perhaps save the sorting until third or fourth year. Or, if it absolutely has to be in their first; have them spend a week in each common room and interacting with the people of those houses. Sorting them so early, creates the us/them mentality and reinforces like-minded thinking.
Can we please talk about poor Slughorn's mistreatment in Deathly Hallows? The dude basically was the canonically least awful Slytherin showing how those traits can very well be a good thing and that man is still thrown under the bus regardless of him being The component that thought Harry and Dumbledore the truth about Voldemort and his horcrux plan. Brah, isn't he technically the head of Slytherin during the period of Snape's Rule? Wasn't he installing any positive influence over his students that'd help counteract what the Carrows were doing? No. like how Book 5 didn't seem to think a house built on ambition wouldn't have students insulted by Umbrige's regression in teaching, JK seemed to not had cared for the idea that there'd be any Slytherin's who'd resist the dark side; Slughorn included. Maybe Dumbledore would say he was sorted 'too soon' and Slughorn should've been in Huffelpuff because of his kindness and work effect. I feel like I'm more or less in the same boat as that.
my thought's more recently on Voldemorte too were sort of like he was totally convinced snape was loyal and he still set the snake on him... That's kind of why he had to be put down.... Ambitions good, but it can be taken way too far.
I think Voldemort definitely believed snape was loyal but like you said ambition got the better of him and in believing snape was the master of the elder wand he had to kill him
Snape should be in Hufflepuff because he imprinted onto Lily like a baby duck. He's loyal to Lily to the point of absurdity. And also because I think Snape in Hufflepuff would be very funny
Theres another function that ambition does, it should mean slytherins would be likely to do jobs that need more doing given how supply and demand effects compensation causing high skill jobs with too few workers to be high in the social hierarchy much of the time
Tbh I have seven but that’s because I collect them. I collect copies of other books too and have multiple prints with different covers of those as well
When I read the comment Dumbledore made about Snape being in Gryffindor, I thought Dumbledore was trying to complement Snape. But I thought it was insulting. I also am tired of the flame wars. Everyone is entitled to their favorite character.
I actually have a lot of Ravenclaw traits but I just can't help it, Slytherin is the one I identify with the most and I would not want to be in any other houses. I think Slytherin is very misunderstood. We aren't evil or selfish, nor arrogant. I think most slytherins just have different values than most people or they don't, they just aren't afraid to openly talk about things like wanting fame and understanding that you sometimes have to care about yourself more than about others. They don't "sugarcoat" things. If they don't agree with you, they tell you. If they find you annoying, they tell you. If they think you did something stupid, they tell you. They can be rude or arrogant or even evil, but in the end, nothing is black and white. Dumbledore was a Gryffindor and he was still manipulative af sometimes. But did it make him a Slytherin? of course not. It's just that people are complex.
I'm a Hufflepuff, but I sort of agree with you. The qualities of Slytherin can produce both good and bad outcomes as can the qualities of the other houses.
Slytherin always being for Voldemort makes no sense. Even Draco's dad hated Voldemort by the end of the First Wizarding war because he was just a straight up dick. Why do you think he gave 2 shits about bringing him back. Voldemort does not show one of the key traits of Slytherin. Loyalty to friends and Family. He killed his follower for showing concern about him. How can you be ambitious when a guy like that rules the wizarding world. I was sorted in Slytherin on Pottermore and I despise Voldemort.

I mean no, snape was an ass and a bully, but his love wasn’t obsessive. Where is it implied it is? His reason for turning against Voldemort can be seen as selfish because he only really cared for her, but he was never ”obsessed”. He left her alone when she wanted to end their friendship, and as far as we know he never spoke to her again. You are allowed to love a married woman, even if it is unrequited. He doesn’t meddle with Lily & James’ relationship. He doesn’t make her a love potion. Him begging voldemort to spare Lily because he didn’t want her to die was not some masterplan to get James out of the picture so that he could get with Lily. He had already lost her trust by then, and I don’t imagine he ever thought she would forgive him. He just wanted her to live. People throw this word around because they either severely misread Snape’s character, or they use it as a reason to justify their hatred of him. Like, there are already multiple reasons for that already, you don’t have to make EVERYTHING about him ugly. Yes, Snape’s love for Lily does not make him a good person, nor is it enough to redeem him. But why label it as obsessive? I don’t get it..

Snape - Stealthy and cunning. 100% true Slytherin. Draco - Bully and cowardly. Doesn't belong in Slytherin. Draco would've done better in a house that would've helped him grow past his flaws and become a better person like house Gryfindor or Hufflepuff.
I think that depends how we look at sorting. we don't know if the sorting hat takes into account only what you're like at 11 when it sits on your head, or if it has a way to see what you're like fundamentally as a whole person, as in what you value inherently and will continue to value most as you grow up
I hate Snape so much. #RegulusBlackWasTheBestSlytherin The only reason he joined Dumbledore is because Voldemort was considering Lily Potter. If not, he'd be in Azkaban. End of freaking story. But he is a Slytherin.
That is flat out not how it works. Believe it or not, the HP universe is not real, it's all her imagination. How can you not understand what you created?
"J.K Rowling Doesn't Understand Slytherin" You do understand that she wrote the books including Slytherin, don't you? Why are you saying that she didn't understand what she wrote especially since it's an incredibly massive hit? Harry had to have a rival in the books and JK Rowling chose Slytherin house to be that rival. The rival had to be at least partially evil. This helps the main character's storyline as a hero. It's just that simple.
The point is that she made a mistake associating ambition with evil when lots of "good" characters display the traits that Slytherin values. Heck, Dumbledore is probably the most ambitious and cunning character in the whole franchise, yet he's a Gryffindor simply because he's a good guy. I agree that Harry needed a rival, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be more nuance. Like, the series would be more interesting if Dumbledore and Cedric were Slytherins or if Rowling had gone through with adding the character Mafalda Weasley, a Slytherin. The books even suggest that Slytherin isn't inherently bad, but has simply been corrupted by Voldemort. Yet the books never follow through on that narrative and still put all the unlikeable characters in Slytherin. Which is just unfair, because the other houses' core traits can also be negative if they're taken to extremes. Bravery can become recklessness, intelligence can breed arrogance and loyalty can lead to dogma.

I'm pretty sure it was established the witches and wizards weren't being killed in witch trials.
I'm enjoying reading your thoughts on the matter of Slytherin House. :)
@@thebrooklynquintana Oh my God yes! This! I have been saying for so long that Dumbledore is a villain! This is only mentioned like once or twice in the books but Merlin, one of the greatest wizards of all times who also protected muggles was a Slytherin.
Yessss!!! I loved every second of this video.
I also loathe how she/Harry describes all Slytherin characters in a negative way physically as well--either they look like trolls or they're ugly in some way.

@@thebrooklynquintana oh thanks!! And maybe it is the most unpopular opinion ever but i see Bellatrix lestrange in hufflepuff since she is a very loyal, patient and hard-working person. I know it is impossible for some people to even think about it (she is evil so she has to be in slytherin following jk rowling's logic) but i see more hufflepuff trait's in her than slytherin's
And Umbridge is an evil Hufflepuff!
I feel like Snape was supposed to be like the representation of Slytherin which is just frustrates me. Like Snape is actually rude and a bad person but then he does one good thing and becomes a star Gryffindor boy. And I have to agree like Slytherin is like the “bad” house and Gryffindor is the good boy house. Also like Hermione literally doesn’t like being judged for being a muggle born but in multiple occasions we see her being just judging all of Slytherin just because of Draco and his goons and just uggghhh frustration
Agree.Snape is a bad%ss but GOD is he a huge Piece of sh#t.yes he loved lily sure and protected harry all and all but...
His love for lily is toxic as hell,
And he bullied Harry out of Pettiness.like if you bully someone out of petty spite, and if you,i dont know save them from a car crash.youre still an A-hole.i really wished that rowling actually used the house system and made the characters Interhouse and that stuff.or at tge very least One just One Good Slytherin for the Narrative
I've always thought J.K. would be in Slytherin. Why is she so mean to her own house?! 😭

Judith Couillard thank you ! I’ve got a lot to say in the topic
So I am a Gryffindor and my best friend is a Slytherin. We both have tendencies from each others houses, I can be really cunning and ambitious and she can be really brave and passionate. We work really well together, so well that if you mess with either of us it most likely won't end well for you. We also annoy each other a lot but we wouldn't have it any other way.
it's always nice when there can be inter-house cooperation! glad y'all get along :)
I mean Andromeda was a Slytherin and she definitely wasn't a blood supremacist or evil. Did Rowling just forget her?
So it seems. She certainly is a front runner in my opinion. In the ranking of best slytherins I’d put her second, behind snape but ahead of regulus black. Good point and thank you for commenting !

One of the reasons why Discworld is better.
Its easer to be brave when your cunning and have a plan.
I think Hagrid was a hufflepuff
Me too
I do think they sort children to early, because at 11 I did not really have a definitive personality, and when they sort children at that age the only people who will know their true personality is maybe their house mates.
I really feel Snape is itself the hero ... everything else is just the context ✌️😂....rip Alan Rickman

How do you not have more subscribers? I'm dumbfounded
Wait. Weren't the Slytherin's not allowed to help in deathly hallows battle? I don't remember!
Yeah bc they thought they would all turn on hogwarts i believe (i migjt be wrong so dont hold me accountable but i think)
I think hagrid would have been a Hufflepuff. He was in the basement when the dark lord came to visit him. Hufflepuff house is in the basement.
Tonks was a hufflepuff, so there's that too, I guess.
Can we please talk about poor Slughorn's mistreatment in Deathly Hallows? The dude basically was the canonically least awful Slytherin showing how those traits can
very well be a good thing and that man is still thrown under the bus regardless of him being The component that thought Harry and Dumbledore the truth about Voldemort
and his horcrux plan. Brah, isn't he technically the head of Slytherin during the period of Snape's Rule? Wasn't he installing any positive influence over his students that'd
help counteract what the Carrows were doing? No. like how Book 5 didn't seem to think a house built on ambition wouldn't have students insulted by Umbrige's regression
in teaching, JK seemed to not had cared for the idea that there'd be any Slytherin's who'd resist the dark side; Slughorn included. Maybe Dumbledore would say he was
sorted 'too soon' and Slughorn should've been in Huffelpuff because of his kindness and work effect. I feel like I'm more or less in the same boat as that.
my thought's more recently on Voldemorte too were sort of like he was totally convinced snape was loyal and he still set the snake on him... That's kind of why he had to be put down.... Ambitions good, but it can be taken way too far.
I think Voldemort definitely believed snape was loyal but like you said ambition got the better of him and in believing snape was the master of the elder wand he had to kill him
Ambition, for those who doesn't have the guts to pursue it, seems like an evil thing.. Slytherin here... 🐍
Snape should be in Hufflepuff because he imprinted onto Lily like a baby duck. He's loyal to Lily to the point of absurdity. And also because I think Snape in Hufflepuff would be very funny
Bravo👏👏👏 i either love Snape) it's been 20 years already, since I first read the 1st book in Russia in 2001))
I'm a slytherin and I'm really REALLY MAD about JK Rowling hating Slytherins
Theres another function that ambition does, it should mean slytherins would be likely to do jobs that need more doing given how supply and demand effects compensation causing high skill jobs with too few workers to be high in the social hierarchy much of the time
Not that I have any objections to it, but why do you have at least three cover additions of the entire series?
Tbh I have seven but that’s because I collect them. I collect copies of other books too and have multiple prints with different covers of those as well
When I read the comment Dumbledore made about Snape being in Gryffindor, I thought Dumbledore was trying to complement Snape. But I thought it was insulting. I also am tired of the flame wars. Everyone is entitled to their favorite character.
I am a proud Slytherin 🐍🐍🐍🐍
It's just that people are complex.
where did you get your shirt? Slytherin pride!
Amazon I think !

Snape was an ass. His love wasn't pure it was obsessive. He was a total jerk to Harry just because he looked like his father. Yes I am a Slytherin.
Well James was a jerk just like Harry.

Snape treats Harry badly from the start, and even if harry turned out to be a jerk, Snape is a teacher and an adult so mistreating a child like that is a total abuse of power

Voldemort: "Interesting..."
They were both jerks

I agree with what you're saying about these specific characters, but let's be real. They do sort too soon at Hogwarts.
I think that depends how we look at sorting. we don't know if the sorting hat takes into account only what you're like at 11 when it sits on your head, or if it has a way to see what you're like fundamentally as a whole person, as in what you value inherently and will continue to value most as you grow up

No offense, I love Snape too, but, when are people gonna realize...Snape is dead
mermaid snake535 ....yes he is.
