    Not a flat bedder or heavy hauler but these videos are very helpful and educational to know. So thank you for taking time out of your day to educate drivers because that's something you don't have to do. Not everyone is willing to share tips and pointers.

      Hydraulic neck is great, until the pony motor dies, or you blow a hose out in the middle of Bum Phuck Egypt.

      I had a lot of bad experience with a pony motor rgn . A lot of times it wouldn’t start with full tank . It has pros anc cons .

    I’m curious as to why these mechanical trailers even exist. Labor is the greatest expense of most companies, and these seem pretty labor-intensive. Fascinating even so.

      Our guys and gals work with just about every open deck trailer out there so they need to be ready to handle them all, whether they prefer them or not. That's why they are some of the best.

    Thank you this is the first time I have ever used a manual so I had to watch you’re videoi watched another one where a guy did not even drop the trailer one the ground he dropped on a board and used the board like you did on the frame ! So it was confusing.

    Really good video, thanks. What I really appreciate about it is the fact that you're doing it with well used, normal trailers that need some lube and cleaning. There's plenty of videos of this being done at the factories with brand new trailers, that make it look like it's easy all the time. It isn't...
    I have a 2013 Superior mechanical stretch I just bought 2 months ago from a dealer in Pittsburgh, PA. It was parked next to an XL Specialized when I went and looked at it, and they're IDENTICAL to each other. Like someone quit XL and started their own manufacturing facility and copied them inch for inch...They're not very common, and even the dealer didn't know much about this Superior trailer, we searched the internet and didn't find much on them. But, they're basically an XL. I keep my rails and pins and linkages "sloppy" with lube; I can't stress that enough. I clean the rails so it slides easily, and I put 90W gear oil on them when I do slide them and run them in and out a few times to help make it easier to stretch and close up. Can't emphasize enough about proper maintenance and cleaning and care so they work properly; pressure wash underneath them as much as possible too.
    I've also taken the time to mark off different stretched distances in increments on the main beam with yellow paint pen, so I know at a glance how long the deck is at each notch, and even marked where the pins are on the deck for easy reference while still on my feet.
    So the issue I run into with mine is, when loaded and reattaching again, I have a hard time with getting the neck hooked back to the deck due to the height difference. I've been in bad conditions such as snow/ice recently, and the trailer would settle a couple inches and the truck's air suspension doesn't go low enough to get the plates back lined up to the deck. I've been around a long time too, so I planned ahead the first time I used this trailer and I carry two 12 ton bottle jacks and had to jack the deck up and block it up about 6-8" off the ground with 55k lbs ON the deck, so I could slide back under the neck without abusing the truck/driveline/rears. I also have a tough time with 55k lbs on, when it's time to unhook from the neck again to unload. The 5th wheel doesn't like it at all with all that weight on, and I've literally had to block the trailer up loaded, and dump the air bags just to get broke away from the 5th wheel. Now, the trailer is 8" off the ground, and I end up having to build more bridging and ramps to unload. I was moving railcars last week, so that scenario ended up more of a project because now I had to compensate for the angle of the ramp I made for the railcar wheels, and block a lot more, etc. The ULTIMATE situation is to have the deck on the ground, but I have to develop a way to lift it loaded to get hooked back up without so much stress on the tractor trying to slam back under 55k lbs of load PLUS the weight of the trailer.
    I am currently investigating a lifting system to have for the next time I use this trailer. I'm looking at air mats for one system, flat mats that when placed underneath the trailer ramps that can be inflated and lift to help with unhooking/rehooking, or a hydraulic toe jack for each side that I can use to raise and level side to side. I just can't seem to be able to get off the 5th wheel or back onto it when loaded heavy, without having to block the trailer higher than I want to, so I need to come up with a way to lift as needed.
    It's not for a rookie; you have to have your wits about you with these trailers.
    Again, thanks for the "real world" tutorial videos. Great stuff, as I always say..."there's NO substitute for EXPERIENCE"...

      If you have a machine that youre loading such as a dozer you can run it all the way to the rear if the trailer before you try to re hook the neck. Then once the trailer is rehooked and on your fifth wheel you can back the machine forward to properly distribute your weight.

      @@kylefitzy I fully understand that, but when you have a fixed piece of equipment such as a 55k lb railcar on it, there's no changing the weight distribution. It's where it is for the ride.
      There's really no good solution with a mechanical detachable neck, other than having a couple of 20 ton jacks to help lift enough to take the stress off the tractor to rehook. I got 2 new ones that are in a new toolbox that I mounted under the neck for quick access. Other than that, a hydraulic neck is the answer, just not feasible with the cost of one currently.
      I've got it figured out pretty well now though, since working with it several times. It's a thought process and having the right tools is important.

    Are you sliding the 5th wheel because of its placement on a KW or...? I have done RGN with a cascadia a ton of times and never slide the 5th wheel. Video is well put together.

    Hydraulic is definitely better, however not everyone can justify the cost difference and don't use it enough to keep everything in good working condition... mechanical always works properly with a good operator....

    We just bought a 2004 Fontaine Renegade XLT extendable double drop trailer..
    We unlocked the pin by switch(air) but when we move trucker the trailer also move and both pin was jumped to lock positions
    Therefore could not be extending.
    Someone Please kind help to teach how make trailer barker are on and pin was released. Then trailer will not move with trucker, and then we could extend the trailer.

    We have some T 880 KWs at work.
    Why they have 18" of frame behind the shock and airbag I don't know. I pull containers I can't go forward of the center of tandem need to "Schneider Bob" the frame. I call it that cause that's what Schneider National did to their trucks that haul their containers

    As someone who runs reefers exclusively, stretching the XL is similar to how we shift the bogies to balance the axle loads.
    However, I have to ask. When it's stretched, and you're loading from the nose of the deck, how do you bridge the big open gap between the main deck and the short tail deck?

      Especially on uneven ground when one side sinks, these trailers suck and can get u stuck on rail road track steep crossings!

    Hmmmm, I'll take a regular lowboy or whatever type of trailer of a similar style, just with a hydraulic system, instead of all of this mechanical crap!Even dropping a lowboy with a hydraulics is a headache, but this here is beyond a headache. This thing doesn't even have a mechanical neck support, which is crazy to me. I'm sure they could have designed a handle operated neck support vs. a design where you have to use a piece of wood. The damn trailer alone is more work than securing the load, smh! There are too many damn pieces that can be forgotten, which equals disaster down the road. Hold up, and then, if I'm correct, you have to disconnect from the neck/trailer first, just to prepare the trailer to be disconnected from the neck, and then reconnect to the neck/ trailer, and then disconnect the neck from the trailer so you can finally load it? Naw, I'll pass, lol!

    Just out of curiousity ... don't you block the trailer first on the front on the ground , then dump the air and unpin the neck hauling it off , blocking the neck on the truck frame with a 4x4 piece so it can't move sideways and the nwhen you drive away - the neck is on the truck and the trailer is on the ground ? It's a lot simpler to do that.... anything you might ever load like a cat or piece of machinery can easily drive up a 4 inch wood block... it's on tracks ... tracks can go anywhere ... I can't understand why you do twice as much work when all you have to do is set two blocks under the front of the deck ... shove a 4x4 under the neck unpin and drive away ... it takes five minutes ... when you go hook up, back up, pin it up and raise the air ... put your blocks back on the truck .... connect the air and drive off... so simple. You make it all look very hard and complicated ... it's not ... and in case you are not aware ... you don't even need to unhook to load a big cat ... just put a bunch of old tires on the deck... drive it up the side without unhooking ..... just drop air so it's sort of solid , turn it and park it ...the old tires keep the deck getting marked up ... just drive it up over the side, turn and park, tie it down and go ... you make it all seem like it's very complicated - it's not ... I would recommend you go talk to some old drivers and figure out how to do it very easy ....After a bit of watching ... I just gave up .... everyone ought to know how to stretch a trombone ... why would a rgn be any different ...
