I appreciate an officer who takes the time to explain and educate on the rules and regulations. It's safer and just downright friendlier. Thank you Sir.
I have never been put out of service for a loose chain. Most officers understand that they can work loose traveling and just have you tighten it up. Been pulled over for a loose chain and personally I’m glad they did so I can fix the problem. Safer for everyone that way.
30yr cdl a driver here.... 15yrs heavy haul .... just want to say this is a great video... I see a lot of guys out there running dirty and unsafe... a lot of companies don't take the time to train properly because they themselves don't know the regulations..... BTW 3/4 in tear on a 4in strap put you out of service....
I think in this state there used to be a separate police force with the dot that this guy was a part of before it got folded into the state police. The only thing a dot officers job used to be was to go out and hunt down commercial vehicle violations. As a normal everyday driver you shouldn't be pulled over by a DOT cop unless you're doing something extremely stupid and/or felonious otherwise they'd just call you into the state/local police.
Thanks to both of you I am getting ready to get into school in about 2 months there's already quite a bit that I have learned previous to becoming a class a driver with my own loads etc but I did learn things today much appreciation to both of you and I am considering ultimately trying to make the most money either using step decks or lowboys to haul the big toys and make the most money thank you again.
This is actually incredibly interesting to hear about and learn how safety is being implemented. Some people may think this is the government being overbearing but its stuff like this that saves lives.
How many lives has government cost due to inefficiency and regulations? Privatize all roads and have competing road ways. Their incentive will be to be as safe as possible for their consumers. How many lives have been taken by potholes not filled by the government?
@@Larrybird1980 well for starters e longs it forces the driver to push harder to make the deadline does not alow time for a nap if the driver gets tire were paper logs do truck accidents increased with the mandates how about they will shut a truck down for a couple of psi low on 1 tire but that bine head that cut the truck off gets away scot free and if the truck hits him it's the trucks falt because he cannot stop I drive a 160,000 pound 11 axle gravle train it does not stop on a dime laws r not enforsed on cars like they should be that gets people killed there too would u like me to continue

15:07 an important note to add to this very informative session is when using straps is to pay attention to the color of the red line. It indicates the age and wear of the strap. The less red there is in the strip in the middle indicates the strap is no longer at its rated strength. So when they start looking pink time to get rid of them. Edit: I spelled wear wrong
Something else that’s worth mentioning is that if you happen to use a hook with a different working load limit than your chain, then that chain automatically gets the same working load limit as the hook. I’ve known people that have changed their hooks, and it caused them to forget that it could be a different WLL hook than the original, leading them to believe the chain still has the same WLL, without checking. That’s another reason why it’s recommended to keep a set of chains for load securement only, plus you’re not wearing the chain out as quickly with other applications, such as skidding logs, etc.
Man I love this video I do heavy haul and this helped me understand working load limits and how much weight you need to tie down. I do machine 80,000 pounds and yeah. I could show you some crazy stuff we do wrong and I might be showing it on my channel soon as well
I'd rather secure the backhoe implement in the down/tied down position rather than in the locked upright position on a trailer just for the additional clearance alone, and many backhoes even locked sway pretty good just driving down the road without a trailer. But good to know the option is there.
He should have talked about over 10 ft long requires another strap or chain... That mean most skidsters without buckets are just over 10 ft long, Therefore you need two straps in the back one strap in front. You're under 10,000 lb however since you're over 10 ft long you need that fourth strat putting you back at four corner securement😮 Then if you have the bucket now you need another strap over the bucket so you need five points of securement and if you're using chains you need five binders. YES? -Plus for smaller skidsters that are under 10 ft long once you put a bucket on them you're back over 10 ft long now so it puts you back at 5 points of securement there as well? 🤷♂️
Heavy haul company i haul for we use 1/2" good for 11 300lbs Some tandem trucks have a couple 3/8 chain but hardly use them The tri drive trucks have 1/2" chains with 9200lb an 13 000lb binders
I have a question, and don’t have FB. If you were to move something like 2 scissor lifts side by side, if you ran 1 chain through both, on each end/front and back, each lift weighs 6500lbs but are they technically considered as over 10,001lbs and now require the 4 corners? Or would the chain, being that it’s 1 chain straight across on each end would get you your 100%WLL and you’d be securing over 100% of the weight of the lifts combined, how would that work? Thanks!
Correct. As long as they aren’t out of service, you’re good to go. Wouldn’t hurt to get one of those chain gauges he has with him as well. Can buy them online
Wtf? There is no audio first 5:26 of your shooting. So I believe a lot of useful information missed.. is there any way to re-upload this video? By the way, thank you for educational video.
Great video. Can anyone out there please recommend an American company that makes all their securement product here in the US. Searched and searched online every time a site advertises just that when I read descriptions they mite have American binders but not American made chain or something along those lines. Bored of DV in the market for flatbed and trying to outfit with quality products but I refuse to use Chinese chain or binders.
i dont know what that tractor weighs, but if it is over 22700Lbs here in north western Ont you can not use straps to tie it down, i learned the hard way some 15 years ago, after using straps for 15 years and never had been stopped, but one day i rented a 6500Lb mini ex and put it on me trailer, and used 2 chain, grade 90 deck chain, witch is minimum, here and it must be gold in color and 2 binders on the 2 back corners, and 2 4 foot long 2" wide 5,000Lb straps one on each front corner and a 5,000 strap over the bucket, i got pulled over by the MTO AND FINED FOR USING STRAPS i was told the strap over the bucket was fine, but they cant be used as a main holding, you must have al goldd color #90 chain, ether 5/16, 3/8. 1/2" 5/8" depending on load weight.. i see mr DP dont have nothing in the center of that roller. here if you run a main chain from one side of the trailer to the other over the load, you must have a binder on each side, as the chain can snag and have little tension on the other side, also here your trailer total weight cant be over 10.000Lbs unless you have a class A license, a G, D, B license the trailer cant be over 10,000. what i hate here is the MTO PEOPLE MALE OF FEMALE WILL NOT TELL YOU ANY THING, UNTIL THEY FINE YOU FOR IT. or plates off on site.. . . So if I have a load for 30k lbs. I have to make sure I have enough chains and straps to cover 15k lbs? If I have 4 straps at 4500 a piece that would work then?
Hello great clip . however i do have one ?. at the start of it he said lets say this weighted 50,000 pounds. cut in half that 25,000 pounds. the chains were rated for 6600 wll. then it went from mechine to trailer and that derated it in half to 3300 wll. and if you have 4 tie downs on it thats only 13,200 pounds. but dont we need to make up for 25,000.. i know it was for training. but he should have said to add more chains

Alright so say I have a piece of machinery, it has grab handle type tie down points on the front and rear, if I run a single chain thru both points and x to each side with a Binder on each corner, do I qualify for the 4 points and the full WLL of my chain and binders?

The WLL of the trailer securement points matter as well
Are you allowed to put more binder than one corner?
Hey dirt perfect, you should have talked about the subject of dirt on the tracks or in-between the lugs on the roller.
I wonder how many chains you would need for a fully loaded M1A3 Abrams MBT which is 73.6 tons.
Can you just use the binder to the trailer or we have to use a chain for excavator

When the distance from the machine to the trailer is short enough to use a binder only, is that DOT approved ??
Yes like excavator tracks you can do that

An excavator with a bucket and a blade. does the blade count as as additional attachment that would require its own chain? Thanx!
Yes it would.
How about binder to trailer ? Is that legal. Like let’s say a binder hooked to the track that then is hooked to a trailer. Is that legal

Bet this guy is fun at a party
He pulls truckers over to take their stimulants I bet he is
Ohh I have been at that scale before! 😂
Tip to remember, the rub rail on many trailers only have a 5020 or 5700 pound WLL, therefore you would only have 50% of 5020 or 5700 pounds.
Where do you find that information
There is no WLL on rub rails. This is one reason FMCSA would not allow securement on rub rails. Which was quick rescinded.
The virginia law on the tie down is the same as you're state
FMCSA says over 10,000 pounds the WLL on each corner cannot be less than 5,000 pounds. Is your 3,000 legal?
What about using rope on under 10k loads? That's what I used almost exclusively to secure everything not welded down and never had anything I secured move an inch.
