So, the chrysanthemum in particular is an interesting choice for the flower they chose to use, because it is a symbol commonly associated with the Japanese emperor, and more generally as a symbol of longevity, nobility and power. Also, since it blooms in the fall, it is also often associated with the autumn harvest. So, in the winter, it is a symbol of something once considered powerful, beautiful and enduring that has withered away.
I'm here for Bitter Dance, cause the rap samples have such an interesting story to me. There was a sample CD that made the rounds in Japanese media around this time. I forget the exact details but it basically had little licensing fees attached so it was widely used. It was that or there was just a small library of available samples period. It was used to VARYING effect in so many things around this time. Jet Set Radio used it for example. You can actually catch samples from the exact same track in Persona 3's soundtrack (sampled from RAPPER 3-5). The album was Best Service - Hallelujah, 1993. Once you learned about it, the really off kilter rap vocals in so many songs made a lot more sense. It was just an easy to use sample pack. But more specifically Bitter Dance sorta jump scares you in the game when it happens. As its just used as a battle theme in a certain part of the game. Its so out of place.
"Jumpscare" is definitely the right word for Bitter Dance's inclusion. I've never played Star Ocean myself, but I've seen all of the original games in action before, so I do have some expectations of what to expect from this series. Bitter Dance flies in the face of those expectations. Having vocalized music in a Star Ocean game is kinda weird to me, but rap just seems completely removed from the SO vibe.
13:00 I might be 3 weeks too late here, but... I think my reasons for watching these videos mostly fall into three categories: 1. Your videos are a fun way to learn about new soundtracks to fall in love with! 2. These videos are just really chill and comfy. You're a chill, comfy, positive person, and it's nice to have a "conversation" with you through a video! Even if it's not quite a conversation. And yes, your tangents are just as enjoyable. 3. After a lifetime of never really enjoying popular/radio music as much as people around me seem to, it's always kinda vindicating to hear someone else say "yes, there is a lot to love about video game music too", especially someone with as much musical experience and knowledge as you seem to have! ...I know I don't need to justify my enjoyment of any music, but it's still nice to hear about.
Yes I did watch all of this video and yes I enjoy you going through analysis and meaning it's very interesting (I remember that Promyvion analysis which was on point 👏), but also I like it when you call out the instruments because i get to learn which instrument is playing (also learn a lot through comments), so now whenever I hear a song which I used to play on repeat now I recognize the instruments, but also recognize instruments I didn't pay attention to before, it's pretty fun, like a mini game lol 😆 Chrysenthemum in Winter is used outside of a town called Airyglyph, it's an arid and snowy area. "Death" is a good word for it, because Airyglyph people were starving to death because of the harsh weather conditions, and thus started a war with another country in order to survive, so more deaths. Bitter Dance..........Yeah. It's a very weird track.... I always thought it didnt belong in the game, it's probably the only track I strongly dislike in it lol. It plays during some specific boss fights in the story, especially some..well.. weird characters... that's all I can say 😂
I mainly come to this channel for your reactions, especially to songs I'm familiar with, and your commentary. I also just like to hear music from games that I've never heard before. I mentioned this before, but I really don't know anyone I can talk to about games or the music from games, so it's just nice to see what another person thinks or feels about this stuff. I especially enjoy seeing you react to songs that I already have some some connection to, because it almost feels like I'm actually sharing it with you. You FF11 and Sonic videos feel like a trip down memory lane, and I still get a kick out of watching some of your FF14 videos.
I watch your videos so I can see that face you make at 14:04. But, no seriously 😂. I genuinely enjoy your reactions and the chill vibes. I enjoy seeing someone discover a song they really end up liking like you did with The Battle For Everyone's Souls and Nascent Pulse. And lastly I like seeing how an actual musician thinks of music I like. Not gonna lie, I only watch your tangents if it's for a song I'm REALLY into. But that's okay.
That's a loaded question. For the songs I know and like, it's because I want to hear fresh insights from a musician who hasn't heard it before. Especially if its something really good or iconic, then I look forward to your appreciation of it. For songs I haven't heard like this one, it's a chance to hear something new. Bitter Dance caught me off guard haha.
Wow, this one's been a long time! So first of all, yes I do listen to your tangents. Always helps me get in your headspace and I learn about music and maybe some artists I've never heard from. To clarify some of your questions, Star Ocean's battle system is not turn based, it's a real time combat RPG like FF VII Remake/Rebirth. The song plays when you take on some of the more high tech/sci-fi bosses in the game. On of the reasons I picked the song is because I'm quite certain that it is a sample voice from somewhere as it's exactly the same as Iwatodai Dorm in Persona 3, which you've already listened to. This game came first by a few years, but I'm sure it's been used other places. The first time I played Persona 3 I was SO confused as to why I was hearing those lyrics.
So yeah, I stick around till the end usually, but I love tangents, especially when it's genuinely you looking more into things like Floriography (apparently that's what it's called) and this channel is so very chill. Also, i love that you give less mainstream game series like Star Ocean a chance, instead of only Going for games that everyone knows. So yeah, Star Ocean Till the End of Time is the 3rd game in the series, and currently there are 6 main-line games, but 8 overall First Departure (1 remake) Second Story (2 remake) Blue Sphere (not mainline) till the end of time (3) the last hope (4) integrity and faithlessness (5) Anamnesis (non mainline) the divine force (6)
8:44 was so funny to me 😹 Also that tangent you went on is what i come for when i see ur videos... i think we understand a bit of ur philosophy!! Keep being you 💛
One of my favorite games growing up. :) I got an emulator for it, but it was completely backwards, and in Japanese. :( The search continues. Chrysanthemum in Winter is a very peaceful, calm track for running around town buying gear, etc. Or crashing something, There are a couple of 'sinister' chords that are rather prevalent throughout. That alone conveys the idea of: "We're safe for now, but there are still battles to fight."
As far as I've seen, All music, every song, is an anecdote of it's own. Music is a universal language, right up there with mathematics. I prefer to hear what comes from the heart, (if indirectly) from someone and see if their love for music makes them feel how I do. Music has a heart. Can you hear it beating?
my memory is hazy about where certain tracks play but this feels like the track that might play when you're at the kingdom in the mountains, cus there's that feeling of a cold harsh place where people are just surviving.
Honestly, half the reason I watch is to hear things like Bitter Dance. Since I've been requesting things where I've wanted to see your reaction to them, I figure there must be just as much interesting stuff that other folks want to get more exposure. But besides that, it's nice to hear your thoughts on things and maybe over time get to learn a bit more about the type of stuff you like to hear. Same way I find satisfaction in making a joke a friend remembers--if there's some request I put in that eventually makes it into one of your playlists, I'll be more than happy. ... but also whether you like it or not the Mana Khemia will be coming :v
Bitter Dance was one of my favorite songs from the SO:TtEoT soundtrack, idk why lol. Back a million years ago it was my Xanga song or whatever the hell that site was called.
I made it through listening to your tangents, and when you were mentioning not really going to watch other reactors because you can quickly pick up on and detect when there's BS - I don't detect anything of the sort when it comes to your reactions. First coming across your content I very quickly realized: Here was a dude just being himself, doing what he likes and having a good time while at it. (What's not to love about that~) If I had to pick one word only to describe what someone could expect from your channel and content, it would be: Genuine
On a side note regarding the game itself: This game...is one the most... infuriating experiences I've ever had - because I originally bought it and played it on my PS2 because (at least from what you could see and learn about the game from the box art at the time) it looks really interesting and had me excited to play it! Just like how Bitter Dance had you confused because it didn't belong - that's how literally playing the game felt. One part of the game feels like what you might expect, but then another part is just...SO FAR from anything you'd expect (but not in a good way..) I ended up having to find ways to motivationally force myself just to finish the game. Because of that experience I remember it as one of, if not 'the', worst game I've personally ever played. So I recommend playing it, just on the basis that someone else might be able to know and relate to the pain I felt. 🥲
and now i hate having not finished Star Ocean TTEOT, I'm gonna guess this is close to endgame and i only got as far as that major plot twist and don't remember hearing it at all.
The theme fits the boss characters perfectly. Egoistic and strange otherworldly fourth dimensional beings. It's almost a breaking the fourth wall kind of strange because of the surreal use of the rap samples from our own world.
Star Ocean is because space travel and different planets are a theme. It is not a metaphor, it is a title that plays it straight.

FINALLY! I HAVE AN ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION!
It's also in some DDR tracks!
From what I remember the bitter dance plays when you fight a new group of enemies after a massive story change and it kinda fits.
Freaking bitter dance. I remember being so wtf about it in game, but i could never bring myself to hate. It's got it's own special charm.

Bitter Dance plays shortly after a huge plot twist that changes the course of the game. It’s bizarre and jarring, but somehow felt fitting to me.

"Great dragon, soar the heavens!" How many times I heard that line from your namesake. Thanks for requesting these.

"Blair! You've been reckless!"
But yeh, Bitter Dance while being the strangest song on the OST, it's recognizable!

Bitter Dance is to a duel boss fight. You get into it while fighting. Kinda gets your adrenaline going. It catches you off guard but it will grab you.

Star Ocean 3 was a mixed bag indeed. I'm fairly sure that everyone who heard the song the first time was just as confused. I sure was.

No, Bitter Dance played at an incredibly inappropriate time in the story considering how goofy the track is.
There sure are a lot of goofy moments in this game lol even in the endgame part ..
