Fixing Exhaust Leaks With Remflex Gaskets - It Works!!

  • Fixing things that shouldn't need fixed again, but here we are. We are working on a 1963 Buick Riviera with an LS1 swap (let's be real - its a 5.3 truck motor). When I first fabricated O2 extensions/exhaust/catalytic converters I used the crappy/cheap double metal reinforced gaskets that the flanges came with.... and they blew out. No surprise really, but I was surprised to see that glueing one side of the gasket to the flange with High Temp Copper RTV to make install easier was the weak point. I would have bet a beefy 5 layer burrito from Taco Bell that the blowout would have happened on the non siliconed side. I ended up having several stainless steel exhaust bolts gall up and had to be snapped off. I ordered all new grade 8 steel hardware from boltdepot.com to avoid the problem again just incase I need to take anything apart in the future. To actually fix the exhaust leaks I went with Remflex collector gaskets and they worked so well I wanted to review them - I've also had good luck with Mr. Gasket aluminum/copper/Ultra Seal as well as SCE copper gaskets in the past. None of the other brands come close to how soft and compressible the Remflex are. They are pricey but worth it! I've used their exhaust manifold gaskets on warped/pitted cast iron manifolds with good success as well. The only downfall with Remflex is I've never been able to re-use them, small price to pay for a guaranteed seal.

    Quite hilarious. Love it. I learned approximately 75 different body twisting methods on how to NOT move a classic car. I loved every body twisting moment. Great job!!!

      Thanks buddy! It’s always a contortionist dream with swapped cars haha. And the gaskets are still going strong, although I did have to retighten the passenger side recently but it resealed perfectly

      Those are the real struggles with projects and every once in a while happens on camera! I’m actually making a revival video of an old Ford pickup right now and I spent way to much time trying to figure out why it wouldn’t run when I was bumping the started over manually underhood only to realize I forgot to turn the key on inside… Awesome project! I have a soft spot for those early Chevy trucks. Cheers!

    I've just put these on my Mitsubishi evo 10. tried every type of gasket to stop a pesky leak. This is the only one that worked. I'm running 400bhp and they hold up just fine. Definitely recommend Remflex

    Remflex are great, as long as they are torqued correctly. usually less than you expect, around 20ftlb!

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  3 года назад +1

      Which basically feels loose, 90% of the time there’s no way to get a torque wrench even close to fitting. Kinda gotta do’um by feel but man 20 ft lb ain’t much.

    "I only had to break one bolt" - lol What is your opinion about double gaskets? One of the exhaust flange gaskets I'm looking at now is on the pipe solid and flat, so I hesitate to remove it. But what about adding a factory gasket to a Fel-Pro gasket that has welded itself onto the pipe?

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  Год назад +1

      I’ve done it, I’m not proud of it haha. Personally I like to use the belt sander to help square them up but here we are. It’s more likely to have a blowout with two gaskets but if it holds, it holds buddy!

    How do you know if you have an exhaust leak? I'm getting a whistle, like a chirping sound from my motorbike after warming the bike up and going down the road. It does this after about a mile for about 10-30 seconds, depending on how much I rev, and stops when I close the throttle. It's about 3 chirps a second, so I imagine it's on the exhaust part of the 4 stroke cycle. Back in the summer I took the exhaust off and re-used the collar/gaskets and I'm wondering if the cold weather is causing a slight leak until it fully heats up and the metal expands.

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  3 года назад

      I’m with you on the heating up and closing the gap theory. I could feel the exhaust escaping and pulsing on my hand to the rpm and plugging HP Tuner I could see odd O2 fluctuations on the driver side but not passenger side. While it’ll try to evaporate quickly - try spraying soaping water at the suspect joint and see if you see any tiny bulbs. Do it when the engine is cold and immediately after it starts or it’ll just burn off.

      @@MatthewFinlay Sounds like a good idea for how to test it, thanks. Just a shame I have to spend an hour taking all the panels off to get to the downpipes. Not good in this weather. It's snow outside right now.
      The sound seems to have evolved into a light scraping noise that is constant now after warmed up. It's hard to describe it, but it sounds like something isn't right. I can only really hear it when it echoes back off of scenery I'm going past. I'm wondering if the oil pump isn't lubricating parts of the engine. Unfortunately the place I bought the bike from has gone out of business.

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  3 года назад

      That sucks, the more you describe it, the less it sounds like an exhaust leak. But also, I’ve seen some weird stuff over the years haha.

      @@MatthewFinlay Yeah, it sounds like one of those pesky problems that doesn't happen in front of the mechanic, and they look at you like it's you... but will aggrivate me until the engine blows up and I say "I told you there was a f**king noise".
