    Clan Hecata have always been my favorite clan since they were released in Cults, subsiding the Tremere which is my 2nd favorite, I really love the formation of all the Necromancers together under a family hierarchy, it's got rich rp potential, the idea of bloodline loresheets is also rich and allows diversity to even if players play a whole coterie of Hecata, they can be very very distinct. The whole clan is just an amazing addition.

    I'm glad that the Giovanni got a re-working as they needed it. They seemed to have far too many bad habits not to get scapegoated or targeted by the two main sects, there were two bloodlines out to get them and they had little in the way of allies. Plus they would have a lot of enemies beyond the Shroud and Wraiths can be unpredictable. They needed to branch out a bit and be developed a lot more so folks knew what options were available.

    • @Galwayshade
      @Galwayshade 10 месяцев назад +8

      Not to mention that many Giovanni would be, say, not one who would be in touch with their emotions thanks to their upbringing rife with domestic abuse and emotional incest. So while they would make effective thugs, bullies and enforcers, it makes them less effective when a softer touch is required.
      And if anyone wants a modern view of the Giovanni, look at Succession. A family with tremendous wealth and power, but everyone is dysfunctional, no one in the family seems that competent and in order to take the top job you have to kill the head of the clan.

    I was a big fan of Clan Cappadocian and preferred them over Giovanni because as mentioned they are not as insular or locked into a specific character concept like mafioso. Hecata was certainly necessary as a way to make the Clan more freeform and accessible and there is a certain poetry to Giovanni elders wrestling control from Clan Cappadocian only to have all these Necromancer Clans unite to overthrow them.
    The one thing that I think is a shame, however, is the fact that by becoming bloodlines they lose their unique Clan Curses but I guess that's something that can be fixed by house rules.
    Thank you for your and your colleagues' contributions!

    Awesome video, very cool insight. I haven't gotten much into V5, but the Hecata seem super interesting. For the mutual survival I assumed it was a continuation of the End of Empires metaplot. My thoughts were Necromancers spent centuries pissing off Wraiths who suddenly didn't have a Hierarchy forbidding them from the Skinlands so it's open season at sunrise.

    I have my problems with V5, and a couple of aspects about the Hecata, but I found a good mindset to approach them from. I tend to think of them more so as a Sect than a Clan. I would've preferred to have rules for using their old clan weaknesses and a greater seperation of Obtenebration and Necromancy. But overall, Cult of The Blood Gods is probably my favourite book in the V5 line, and its the only book in the line I use in my v20 game.

      Main problem with Giovanni/Hecata, and even other three independent Clans from original VtM, is that they ALL work better as Sects. Each had unique Discipline, strong ethos codified around certain Path of Enlightenment (very often dependent of that particular Discipline) etc. It's a shame original creators weren't imaginative enough to introduce Assamites/Banu Haqim, Followers of Set/Ministry, Giovanni/Hecata and Ravnos as cults or minisects teaching their own secret theologies (ie. Paths) and unique powers. Overproduction of Clans and Bloodlines didn't make VtM better.

    First of all, I would like to thank you and your supporter for making this video. It really makes me appreciate the Hecata even more and it addresses the Nagaraja which I always thought was a little puzzling tbh.
    I remember back when Cult of the Blood Gods was about to come out (or it had come out, but we at my table hadn't read it ) and we first heard the Nagaraja were going to be part of the bloodlines joining the Hecata. We were a bit skeptical at the time for the reasons addressed in this video and I'm sure we would've appreciated having the context of this video back then.
    Anyway, we decided to come up with our own reasons why and how the Hecata adopted the Nagaraja. Because we are firm believers of homebrewing sh*t up. And so, for our table we decided the Capuchin had invited the Nagaraja for their unique knowledge of and abilities in Necromancy.
    After all, the Harbingers were the masters of physical death and the Giovanni were master enslavers of souls, therefore to achieve true mastery over death, they needed to learn how to tame the raw forces of Oblivion itself.
    So, they bargained with the Nagaraja for their "Nihilistics" and other secrets in exchange for protection.
    For us, the three headed crest of the Clan of Death represented a conquering of the three aspects of death; the body (the corpse), the mind (the soul/psyche of wraiths) and the spirit (the shadow/oblivion itself).
    We came up with this idea of a big Ceremony performed during Family Reunion where all the bloodlines became one via this rite that involved opening a big nihil by imploding the Angst of a hoard of souls in a Giovanni stronghold and infusing themselves with the energies of Oblivion. A"We might not all be family in blood, but we'll all be family in death" sort of thing.
    It served us to explain why all the newly embraced Hecata shared one common weakness and why the Hecata started to get an affinity for obtenebration, as well. After we read the book we found out we came close to canon somehow, and we were pleasantly surprised.

    • @TheGentlemanGamer
      @TheGentlemanGamer  10 месяцев назад +3

      Very good work there. And you make a valid point there at the end, too: once you read the book you found out you were close to canon. A lot of people leapt to judgement without even reading the book, which was frankly a little silly. Anyway, please do consider backing The World Below on Backerkit: www.backerkit.com/c/projects/onyx-path/the-world-below

    I really enjoy the work on Clan Hecata. My original theory was that Clan Giovanni was going to show up leading the Sabbat. If the Lasombra didn't want to be the leaders there,the vampire mob would. But I like this as well. The necromancers merged to avoid being part of a sect. They're one way out of having to be very deep in a sect and the great game of the night wars.

    36:06 - not all ventrues should be stock brokers
    I couldn't agree more! I was always flabbergasted by the poor representation of ventrue in games and certain playing sessions. They are usually played as narcissistic "dicks". In the meantime, the docs describe them as true leaders. Well, if they are true leaders, why do I not want to follow them? Why are they depicted like a spoiled child? I feel like a classic ventrue is the kind of person that could inspire you enough to join a crusade all the way to Alexandria with their talks about righteousness (while providing perfectly viable arguments at that) and the only way you would find out they are full of crap is when you in the middle of a desert, injured from combat to a near death. Now, that's when you start (if at all) questioning your life choices and whether it was the right idea to believe the ventrue. That's when you rebel and start understanding Bruja much better.
    But most ventrue I've seen are in-your-face walking stereotypes.

    Hi, I'm fairly new to the setting but I still find these vids incredibly interesting. My fav clan is Lasombra (I've already seen your vid on them), and while I can't say I 'most identify' with them, I do feel like I am somehow drawn to them, probably a combination of their feature set, their ambitious/ruthless nature and their lack of remorse in going for it. My second interest is the Giovanni though, I just like how unapologetic they seem to be. Incestuous but also proud. Powerful and yet seemingly do nothing with that power other than to amass more power. I find them fascinating because I find them very contradictory. I'm also a huge fan of unreliable narrators, especially when framed as an 'official' response. First really became aware of it as I am a fan of the Warhammer 40,000 IP as well, and all the codexes tend to be written from a pro-Imperial slant when you come to the fluff/history pieces, but now I just find that unreliable narrators should give you enough to be knowledgeable of a certain area, but it should be suspicious enough that you can draw your own conclusions, and therefore I think it's a valuable plot element in its own right.
    Anyway, I find it would be quite hilarious in a sense, if 'the Cappodacian' is in fact Cappodocius (unless I guess it's already been 'proven' in some way within the plot that isn't the case) and that him getting the grandkids so to speak to off their Elders is actually quite clever given that, well, the amount of effort he'd have to expend is quite minimal.
    Is it your intention that Augustus is indeed 'dead'? And is death for something like Augustus (or even Cappodocius) 'the end'?
    Perhaps the original problem with the GIovanni was that not enough effort was made to actually incorporate them into the wider setting. I get that this would have been left to the players (or rather the story teller), but you'd think that a Giovanni loanshark would occasionally task one of his childer to beat up a guy who owes him money, and perhaps the GIovanni childer would even volunteer for the job because that would mean he would gain a leg up on that dratted Denise girl who master seems to be playing favourites with, etc.

    Vampires are people first, killers second 😅. So the clan of death truly is the "clan of death". I have to say, I have not really been a big fan of the various varieties of the death clan since learning of this game, but Matthew made their history more interesting to me with his exposition. They've certainly have gone through many periods of "cleansing" and also the usual ages of revolt with the younger against the elder. Yet they seem to always survive it, and not only that but become stronger by it. Very interesting take too on why they are ( or could be) immune to the Beckoning. I wonder how many true elders are left in the clan now.

    An addendum to what you said about the worst way of playing being the stereotype: I think it deserves a caveat, that with your experience might not have thought worth mentioning: If you like playing that stereotype, if you think it'll be fun, absolutely go for it. The point I believe you wanted to make is that nobody should feel restricted by the stereotypes, and there is enough nuance for the possibility of any character, even a Tzimisce who loves and venerates life and happiness.
    I remember I wanted to play as a Tzimisce scientist, and I got shit on because it was a stereotype. I had no idea about that, and I felt good for coming up with the idea. In the end I was just so disappointed that I ended up not playing.

    Great video and explanation! Many thanks for this as it feels great to get this depe dive as I loved Giovanni lore and, although at first felt a bit off the creation of HECATA as it felt more like a technical decision for simplify Necromancy Clans, I started to build my mind around this.
    Certainly the idea of recurrent purges to be related to not feeling the Beckoning had cross mind, so I really loved this kind of confirmation. I also was kind of expecting to be potentially influenced by the end of Giovanni Chronicles where the coterie and Children of Isaac get rid of Capadocius wraith/spectre.
    And related to that, although I loved VtM Swansong video game and the work for the Boston By Night, I think it would have been great to get more details on what happened to Giovanni. My personal take on the matter before V5 release was the bloodlines, mostly the more recent ones, such as Milliner, were probably going to split apart, probably joining major sects if expecting to climb the power ladder, but this V5 approach is great and, in a way, it doesn't feel that different. Who knows what the end of the Promise may bring....

    • @TheGentlemanGamer
      @TheGentlemanGamer  10 месяцев назад

      I wrote quite a lot about the Milliners in V5 for the book that became Boston by Night, but sadly that book ended up getting heavily cut down in size, and lost that content. Very unfortunate.

      @duloc81 10 месяцев назад

      @@TheGentlemanGamer Oh! That's really unfortunate... Any chance there is a way of getting that write up or piece of "lore"? Or is it owned and/or protected by some NDA?

    • @TheGentlemanGamer

      @@duloc81 I strongly imagine it's under NDA, as it's work I submitted for inclusion, making it the property of NACON and Paradox. It's a pity, as that book was one of my fondest creations when it was New England by Night.

      @@TheGentlemanGamerYeah, I kind of guessed so... Anyway, I'd love to see a video explaining your take about it (not necessarily your write up, but some different options to transition from that Dark Colony/GCIV Boston to the V5 version... Or about Lasombra reasons behind joining the Camarilla and Amici Noctis ideas, Vitel's actual destiny and Sybil's plans... Or many other topics!).
      Regarding The World Below, it sounds actually interesting. I've been watching some videos and reading some articles and forums to try to clear up my mind, but feel that 2 days left is too rushed! I kind of regret know not having followed before, so I will keep checking and thinking (also considering delivery cost to Spain, if possible). For what I've seen so far I get some D&D meets Degenesis vibes. Not sure if this is the right forum but, could do some kind of comparison with those IPs, and also WoD, Cthulu or any other major one (to have more chances to know about it). Many thanks!

    I really love video! It's great to listen to all of this from a fan and writer of the Clan of Death!
    A couple of questions: could there be male Lamiae? Could a male Hecate take the Lamia bloodline lore sheet?
    How old could such a vampire be?
    Maybe the case would be that this vampire inherited such blood instead of actually having been embraced by a Lamia?
    I read somewhere, probably the wiki, that Lamiae did embrace males (very rarely). But in the v5 books, it seems to be clear that Lamiea are only women 🤔

      They've got the license, so they can do what they like with it. I'm not hugely happy with text I wrote or developed being altered (as in Cults of the Blood Gods) or used in other books without credit being give to me (the Players Guide), but ultimately it's up to Renegade.

      If I have to be honest somewhat better, although it's... Similarly to most of V5... A mixed bag at best for me.
      I suppose, much like the Giovanni before it it has gradually grown on me… like a stockholmesque deeply disfunctional relationship, a deeply dosfunctional love hate relationship to be more precise (which, all things considered, is pretty appropriate).
      There are many concepts of v5 with which I do not really agree with, for example the necessity to decommission elders to allow players to "have more freedom", but this has already been talked about and in part it has been recalled.
      Still, in a way or the other, Cults of the Blood Gods, which, even if I do not agree fully with all of what it contains, has still been a positive development, got me from considering the change as heresy and anathema to something I could build upon, correct (such as the italian there present which eeh… let's say its quality honours a long held wod tradition) and possibly refine.
      In a way it's linked to why I decided to start writing a fan book trying to overhaul clan of death lore in general so... There's positives

    V20 player here. Learning about the future, basically..
    So Hecata is essentially a reunited Cap bloodline, with flesh eaters along for the ride? Sooo somewhere between a clan and a sect, but only because the line has been fractured so many times.
    I kind of hate this and kind of love it. I feel too that it helps to make people understand that they can play a harby or sam or gio or cap without being ultra stereotypical.
