Restoration of a Wartime Chronograph Watch - 18K Gold Range Finder

- www.majorwatch... This time I do a restoration of a chronograph watch in an 18K gold case which dates back to the Second World War (1938 - 1945). This watch also has a telemeter scale which is very helpful for anyone involved in gunnery as it can be a vital tool for estimating ranges to visible explosions quite accurately. Once I have restored the watch I actually use it to pin point the location of a fireworks display from footage taken in my home town. This chronograph watch is driven by a Landeron 51 movement.

Once the case back was open and visible this video had me!!!!!!!
I know what you mean jasonlax. These movements are fascinating I think. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker how do you fit belt to this watch? i have the same model
Love the shot of the disassembled 'watch under glass' !
Great to find a watchmaker working in Wales :)
Lovely chronograph.
Hi Paddy... And its a lovely day today in Wales! Thank you so much for this great feedback. Richard
Love the videos can’t believe all the small parts.
Richard, I so much enjoy your videos. I do find them both fascinating and relaxing. I also appreciate your fondness for historical pieces.
Lastly, thank you for your service.
Nice work Richard, I enjoy watching your videos, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Shane. Richard
There are many watchmakers out there plying their trade on You Tube. However, Richard just gets on with it with little or no 'fill' .
I really enjoy the history lessons and clear diction. Thank you.
So therapeutic to watch -thanks again!
Have just found these presentations, and have been watching spellbound, amazing.
Great to watch a quiet video! much better than crap music in the background! interesting thank you
I'm so glad it was you servicing the watch I got lost 3 minutes after you got started. Great work
Watching this is very calming!
I am amazed with the mechanics inside these time keeping little wonders even more with some of your skills to repair it. Thanks for sharing.
Really enjoyed that one I have 3 vintage chronographs with that Landeron engine... so it was interesting to see the movement stripped down... Fortunately my chronographs run well... It amazes me how these movements where manufactured in the 1940s/1950s without all the sophisticated cad and cnc equipment watch manufacturers have today truly amazing it's just wonderful to see these beautiful vintage watches given a new lease of life.... Your vidios are amazing how on earth you can strip down movements and reassemble them is beyond me.... Absolutely amazing... Thank you 👍
You would probably have more subs if you narrated. This is a unique movement compared to the typical Swiss mvmt we normally see - some commentary of the unusual parts would have made this more interesting.
Hi John... I think so too so I am going to do a little more talking I think in future. Useful feedback. Thanks. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker Subbed! To use rank amateurs, a bit more commentary will be helpful. Thanks.
Simply awesome!
Best deal for quality range finder
Wow,that looked very tricky,of course you made it look easy.I'm still envious of your steady hands.................................
Hi Russell.. I love these old chronographs. Something to get your teeth into for sure! Thanks for the feedback. Richard
Beautiful work✨
Another excellent video from the master. Thanks Richard.
Such a beautiful watch and a fine restoration too! 😍
I shot 81mm mortars in the USMC. Nice explanation. Thanks.
Great video, as usual! Beautiful timepiece! Thank you for sharing always great content, and infuse us with some of your love for beautiful timepieces like this one! Cheers, Major!
Another great video Richard, and lovely watch too, i look forward to them thank you, i will watch again to try and see the other thing. I have done a few more now, i wish i'd found watches when i was a younger man, thanks Richard. Dave 👍
Thanks Dave ... it's only shown for a fleeting few seconds! Richard
Another great video. Really enjoy these on a Sunday morning. Great start to a lazy, relaxing day.
Thanks aldfort that is great to hear as providing relaxing interesting videos is part of my intention. Much appreciated. Richard
Watching the Master work is so relaxing! Wow I missed your videos lately ( have been going through some intense online training that has diverted my attention) so this is refreshing for sure. Always have enjoyed your videos, so relaxed, technically knowledgeable and so good with the mechanics. Great to see you and be back watching watches be brought back to life again!!
Richard you are the best
Can not get over how lovely and clean that dial was, was it an old watch, I feel like I've missed the bit where you say "nah it's an eighties watch ".spotless, really.
Beautiful piece Richard 👍
Lovely, caring work on it too. Quality as always Sir
Thanks so much Kent ... good to hear from you! Richard
Wow that is a work of art on the inside
Haha! Its pretty right? Thanks Michael. Richard
I'm speechless. This was fantastic. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks you so much John. Much appreciated. Richard
We use them. Excellent.
Really cool watch, and a really useful measuring scale to help locate enemy artillery position's along with a map and a compass and there own fire.
Always enjoy watching these restorations from you. Thanks!
Thank you so much Phil! Richard
Chilling to this video
We were taught to roughly calculate distance from which a sniper was shooting at us by counting seconds from muzzle flash to report...or worse, in the absence of muzzle flash we could estimate range by calculating the time when we could see/hear a bullet hit near us to the time the sound gets to us. Keeping your cool under those conditions is the problem. Quick maffs.
What a beautiful and functional watch, it will give great pleasure now it works.
Thank you Richard, for another informative and enjoyable video
Thanks To Fu! Richard
Lovely Video Richard very interesting function on that watch 👍
Such a beautiful watch and an awesome job restoring it!!!
Well done.
Nice job Richard, love your close up photography !
Thanks Randy! Richard
I love watch a maker at work. It is like magic to me. And I would be happy to be able to service my pocket watch.
But I dare not and take it in for service. Thank you Richard for what you do.
It’s been a while since I watched one of your video (work is keeping me busy…) but I had forgotten how great it is !
Very relaxing and instructive yet. This watch is beautiful and you helped it find its youth.
Thanks for the great work, you’re inspiring me to keep dive in watchmaking. I’m currently repairing old watches I bought for a few euros to learn a bit on my spare time :)
I hope everything is doing well for you and your family. I wish you the best for 2022 Richard !
Throughly look forward to watching your content, lovely to see someone care about the quality of work they deliver. Please keep it up. P.S. are you accepting work at the moment?👍
Very interesting vintage watch superb job well done.
Thanks so much Restoration Australia! Richard
Love watching you work mate
You did it again, what an absolute stunning piece that is.
Thanks so much Carlos! Richard
Great video, thanks for sharing! 😃
Bloody genius, thank you
Increible video!!!! Totalmente hipnotizado....
What an excellent video of a master at work! Cheers 🍻
Nice work as always.
I use my Zodiac chrono for distancing thunder and lightning.
Nice work as always Richard. These vintage chronographs are becoming very popular. Just picked up a stunning Rodania Super with the Landeron 248. Keep well from New Zealand.
Hi Bruce.. I agree that the popularity of these chronographs is on the rise. I think the market is responding accordingly as prices are on the up. In this instance the money is at least following something of genuine value I think. These chronograph movements of the 1930s onwards are often pretty special. Thanks again. Richard
Found your channel today and I have been mesmerized all day looking at your repair on several watches thank you I do have one question what type of oil applicator do you use
Hi Richard, was it the yoke not seated? Fun that i couldn't sea it, or still can't if it's wrong.
I really would love to service/ fix a chronograph i haven't had the pleasure as yet, i still enjoy every aspect of this (for me hobby) work, it's crazy when you've been using the microscope/lenz and then acutely look at the movement without them, so small, tiny it's deceiving, cheers Richard 🤝
Correct! Needless to say the hands would not set like this! Richard
Great job Richard as usual!!
Thank you so much Joeseph! Richard
Love the watch and the video. Another nice work from one of my favorite watchmaker tubes IF NOT my favorite.
Hi Cristobal .... haha! I'll go with favorite! thanks so much! Much appreciated. Richard
Great job as always....thanks alot sir watching your channel working on watches is best way to chill out and enjoy for me....best wishes and thanks again..love from iran🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wish I had your patience and skill. LOVE your videos. Please keep them coming Sir
Sir. A beautiful movement and watch. Thank you for sharing your process to bring it back to life.
All the best,
Norm in Arizona
Thank you so much Norm this is great feedback to get and much appreciated. Greetings to you in Arizona from a very windy Wales! Richard
Отличная работа 👏
Happy new year to you all
Nice Landeron services !! Love your back case/bezel remover, see one like that on Ebay… so will probably my next new tool !! Thank you again for this interesting and nice quality video, I appreciate the close-up of the Pallet fork oiling 🙂. Best regard from Canada !!
Elegant work as usual 👌
Thanks so much Dr. Omar! Richard
I didn't see you checking the pivots
the balance wheel and the escapement
wheel.. both were stuck on into the
Jewels. Was the bottom pivot on the
balance shaft in a good condition?
Because this basic Landeron caliber has been running for more than 70 years. I had these old guys completely
worned out on my workbench.
I always lubricate the heartweels
on the brim. I only saw you
lubricate the pallets of the
escape fork,, but seeing how
you did the job on this video
your customer will be very
pleased when hé sees the
second hand is running over
the face. Last but not least
you gave this watch new
power with a modern main
spring.
I don't collect wristwatches but that is a STUNNING piece. Thank you for sharing.
Really love your channel on watch repair n restoration...cheers frm Singapore.
Great job. I like it.
A beautiful piece of mechanical engineering, even more so as it's pre computer age so someone had to sit and work out every action with no formal of prefab simulation.
Thumbs down are from Patek Phillippe owners that don't think your room is clean enough !
That new camera/microscope is fabulous
Great job, once again. 👏👏👏
Super 🕘Videos , vielen Dank dafür. 🙋♂️
Wow , I want one !
Amazing precision. Great job man
When you flipped the watch over to side two did you forget too lubricate the first two gears that you reinstalled during the reassembly process ? I think that is what you missed.
Aunque no lo creas es relajante verte desarmar y armar los relojes cada pieza tan pequeñas y la pasiensa para que tienes al rearmar me tranquiliza y me relaja del estres gracias por subir tus vídeos
That was a great video, especially the timing functionality was nicely explained. I would chill to this if it wouldn't remind me of a soldering job I did for the last two days. I found out that my eyes can't focus through my glasses anymore and I have to put them onto my forehead. I'm getting old I guess. My colleagues fortunately only designed a few 0402 parts and QFN cases with generously elongated solder pads in so it was manageable. Its reading glasses for me in the future I guess.
Hi kti... Without my glasses I could barely find the door to my workshop and without the loupe I would never be able to work on a watch. I guess embracing the leverage good optics bring is maybe not a bad thing. Good luck with it whatever and thanks for the interesting comment. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker Thanks for the good wishes. I guess looking for good optics will be my goal for new years. The electronics parts I mentioned are 0.5 mm in its smallest dimension. I guess watch parts are smaller still. Happy holidays and good luck in the new year.
Would like to hear more about the make of the watch and its work as well. Enjoyed the video! Best Regards, Jay
Thanks Jay! Richard
Have you ever seen a landeron 58 movement? It's so beautiful and a genius mechanism. especially the calender setting and the chronograph is pretty simple as well.
I’ve just found your channel and I must say your work and content is truly stunning, I also work on watches but sadly lack the skills to make content like you do, thanks for sharing your skills with us for a relaxing but informative and educational value. 👍😉💚🍻
Loved the flash/bang example! Was the mistake to do with the sliding pinion/yoke seating? Top work as always 👌🏻
Haha! Correct Answer!!!! ***** JSG is First to Correctly Pin Point the Mistake *** The sliding pinion yoke was not seated on the sliding pinuion but trapped between it and the clutch! Nice one sir! Everyone! ... Go check out JSG Watches, some great content to be found there ... ruclips.net/channel/UCQNvTMHyqnE_VmQkxzMhccQ Richard
Как всегда отличная работа!!!
Would have liked a close up of the problem and show or explain how you fixed it. Gorgeous watch!
I can't see how you can do such work. I tried to take apart a cheap day date movement and gave up after taking the first screw off of the balance wheel bridge. Looking at your video I see the wheel gets stuck and you have to work it loose. Excellent work on this chronograph!!!
Hi Roland... Thanks for this feedback and yes this work can be 'a bit tricky'. I really enjoy getting lost in it and the challenge of achieving a good result. I guess this keeps me going. Thanks again. Richard
Nope, no idea what the mistake was.
Lovely watch.
Just wondering about the crystal, was it gold tinted, or just the light.
And... How did you get the stuck wheel out? Guess it wasn't a lump hammer, or WD40
As for the telemeter scale, wish I'd had one as a kid. We used to count seconds to work out how far away the lightning was.
Old acrylic watche crystals often tern yellow with the elements( sun, uv, salt, …) like dial laquer
@@esteban8840 thanks, didn't realise it.
Nice project ! Why did the escape wheel get stuck in the bridge, and why was the pivot on the 4th wheel so long?? I am really enjoying the videos.
Art
Wow! Great video and I really like this watch! I'm pausing the video 14:51 to try and see the mistake and it looks like that cover/spring is screwed down already while the lever isn't in its groove (and now cannot get in the groove because of the cover/spring in the way).
Marvellous time piece and a pleasure to watch Sir.
Oh I almost forgot “Crack & Thud”
Thank you.
Hi Deca B... Thank you sir. As I remember 'Crack and Thud' was a bit different from 'Flash and Bang' and a little more alarming! Great feedback! Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker
indeed it was.
Thank you for a bit R&R viewing you work, extremely peaceful.
Hermoso reloj y excelente trabajo, muy gustaría que haya la opción de subtítulos en español saludos!
Subscribed because you mentioned Flash to Bang! I remember it as crack-thump and it is a superb range-finding tool. Loved your video. Thank you for posting it. LIked, Subscribed and Notifified.
Hi Moped In The Malverns ... Welcome aboard! I too remember the 'crack-thump' but it is importantly different to flash-bang .... and much more alarming! Great feedback. Much appreciated. Richard
Richard your cleaning processes really do the job. There was a lot of fine adjustment to get the balance seated properly, but when it was, it jumped back to life. Did your mistake involve the placement of the gold wheel with the black gear on top of it?
Hi Paul ... yes I have refined the process to try and get it all minty clean! The impulse jewel just needed to find the corrrect height and it was off! Regarding the mistake .... no, it was something else! Richard
I watch a lot of watchmakers channels and find yours to be one of the best. The watchmakers story and commentary make the videos what they are but I've had a thought I wanted to share with you. What if you watchmakers wanted to spice up the content occasionally..... Maybe a video where you are limited by a poll that subs fill out that only allows you 3 or some limited number of tools to complete the service or repair? Or maybe you partner with another youtuber and work on the same watch and see who can complete a service the fastest with good results? Just a thought and either way I'll continue to enjoy your work and more importantly THANK YOU for your service.
Hello Richard, I was wondering what cleaning and rinsing solutions you use.
Hi Richard. It's fascinating to see you work. It is almost unbelievable that it can be done. Can you maybe help me. I have a Seiko watch where the frame by date and day has fallen off. How do I fix it again. Hope you can help me. 🇬🇧🇩🇰 Sincerely, Lars from Denmark.
Saludos desde México buen canal 🤠👍👏
Not greasing the keyless works? I hope you answer as this has been up for some time.
