Featured in this video is the restoration of a 1953 Breitling Ref 178 with 18K rose gold case and a Venus 170 mechanical column wheel chronograph.
Restoration undertaken by Nicholas Hacko, Master Watchmaker on September 30/09/2020.
The story of Breitling began on 1884 when 24 year old watchmaker Leon Breitling founded the small watch manufacturing workshop in Saint-Imier, Switzerland.
Leon Breitling specialized in production of complicated stop watch timers and chronographs.
By early 1930 Breitling had 40 different chronographs on offer.
In 1939 Breitling signed a large contract with British Air ministry to make flight chronographs for the Royal Air Force. After WW2, Breitling was an official supplier to Douglas, KLM, BOAC, Lockheed, Air France and United Airlines.
To this day, Breitling chronographs are regarded as a true pilot's watch known for their reliability and precision.

Absolutely fascinating!!!! Beautiful work there. Could you tell what kind of a liquid you have used to clean the dial? It does not seems to be too aggressive. Keep up the awesome work and I can only pray for more content of this and the video quality! I used to be a collector, but I liquidated my collection to venture into real estate. In January, I acquired homes in Malibu for $34 million, and the returns on investment far exceed what I earned as a collector.
How did you grow your portfolio to $34m, I'm impressed, I have a lump sum in the bank, the rates are not impressive so I'm moving it, whats your cash flow like?
I have a financial advisor (trader) she grows my liquid assets and I reinvest the weekly payouts back into real estate and long-term ETFs.
Great move, please can you share her with me, or maybe her name so I could search for her online, thanks
Cathy Jemar Carlone look her up.
Smart move, I love it, I have similar pattern for my cash flow as well.
I bloody love these videos, Mr Hacko. Lord knows how you remember where everything goes back. And that new strap is a thing of beauty. Great work. Again.
He has filmed the whole process so it's probably not so hard to know where everything should be placed. The hard part is to organize them during the process of restoring so that nothing goes missing or damaged.
I just love watching this, though I'm not sure why.
That is my kind of watch. History and patina without all the glitz. A man's everyday timepiece.
I can almost hear the watch say ,,thank you"
I could do without the music but I do love watching a nice restoration.
Bravo!! Beautiful work. Can you start adding a playlist to the music as well? Love when the watch comes alive after installing the balance wheel.
A compelling restoration. I too was born in 1953, and I wish I could clean up that good. Kudos for the music.
Not 1953... he’s incorrect. 1946 model.
This is a much more complicated mechanism than most other watch vids I have seen
Whats with the bottom subdial for the seconds? Why is it scaled only to 45? :D
I think bottom sub displays regular seconds. Central seconds hand is for chronograph function, top sub displays chronograph minutes up to 45.
very curious about this as well. the small seconds appear to be mislabeled. I see one with the same dial (maybe the same watch) on an online auction site. can't find any others though.
I have the same model. The bottom sub dial of my watch displays seconds and it has 60. The upper sub dial displays minute for chronograph and it has 45.
Stunning workmanship. Something that was just about a “throw away”, reincarnated to a beautiful timepiece, true nirvana.
I don't understand how this video has 85 👎. Only thing I can think of is they hit the wrong button. Excellent video & excellent watch restoration. I would be proud to own that watch.
Thank you!
Ser, watching on your job and listening this music makes this video like a relax lounge film. Thank you.
I can recognize some Dave Brubeck music in there.
So true
How does he remember how to put it back together again? It seems impossible.
You would video it
You have the footage. Plus you get yourself a views
This is why he is a master watchmaker.
once you know what everyhting is , it is impossible not to know where it is supposed to fit.
A little beauty, but not over restored. It even looks happier at the end ,or is that my imagination?
Masterfull. Fantastic restoration. What a beautiful timepiece brought back to Life. Couldn’t stop watching. Kudos.
Simply amazing work. That dial... How do you do that? You, sir, truly are a master. Love the music, btw.
Wow, just wow. Awesome job on that Breitling!! Bravo. When you put that strap on the watch, that just completed everything... Just a beautiful watch, by the end.... well done!!!
Being in electronics repair all my life i cringed remembering the first time i took apart something so intricate forgetting where everything went haha...even more so with all those tiny gears and screws. you good sir are a master of your trade. Love the vid
Very impressive! I can't believe how good the dial looks after cleaning.
Beautiful. Not hard to see why Nicholas is a MASTER watchmaker.
Absolutely fascinating!!!! Beautiful work there. Could you tell what kind of a liquid you have used to clean the dial? It does not seems to be too aggressive. Keep up the awesome work and I can only pray for more content of this and the video quality! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
I would love to know what liquid is as well.
looks reprinted ...
Magical solvent, love to know
Name of dial cleaning liquid??
Love to know. Seams to be a great secret.
Is it only me that’s smiling when the spring starts its magic? 🙄
My dad had one. Wish I had it. Brings back memories. Great work!
I'm not in the watch business but I really like to see your skill in dealing with this micro universe. What would help me a lot is if you put a caption of what is being done in the main stages. Thank you very much.
Beautiful classy watch. Would love to own it.
Wow. That was spectacular! Thank you for sharing! I need a watch like that! Appreciate what you do!
Amazing Nick. One of your best videos. Very happy with the job you did on my Sea master too, by the way. Lucky for us watch collectors here in Australia, we have a talent such as yourself!
Fantástico, belíssimo trabalho, digno de um artista.

That sounds like Paul Desmond on the saxophone with the Dave Brubeck quartet. Beautiful. Nice job on the watch man.
Well done. A concise, masterful, resurrection of a 67 year old Breitling chrono. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to look over your shoulder during this process. It is an affirmation of what skill, a steady hand, and patience can achieve. A joy to behold! Thank you for sharing. The completed restoration gave me a renewed appreciation for Breitling timepieces.
Actually a 1946 piece.
Beautiful work! May I ask you what solutions do you use to clean watch dials? I've tried many chemicals but those were either useless or attacked the painted parts of the dial. Thank you!
In my opinion it looks like it was getting professionally restored.
I would also like to know!!!
Such a great job you did restoring this watch and giving it a new life . Keep up the good work.
How on earth do you know how it all goes back ? I tried to fix my lawnmower carburreta.... had some parts left over after assembly........🤔
It's like the old joke goes about the college student who unknowingly accosted Vladimir Horowitz on a Manhattan streetcorner and asked him, "Excuse me, but how do I get to Carnegie Hall?" The old piano virtuoso responded, "Practice, practice, practice!" :D
Hey William Avery,
Just organization. Take a video when you disassemble your watches and then you could re-assemble all :)
@@Balrogard great tip, i will start sunday, when i take the carrbretta apart. To find out where the leftovers go.
Gorgeous watch. Someday I may have the pride of owning such a timepiece but never will I have the satisfaction of restoring it myself. You are an artist my friend.
At least for me I take tons of pictures each step to reference back and also separate all pieces in order that I removed them, it’s definitely nerve racking the first few times not being sure if you can reassemble everything but over all very satisfying and relaxing for me
The MOST OUTSTANDING watch restoration I have seen. The end result was sublime.
Would loved to have seen the customer's face when they got their piece returned.
Gonna watch it again :-0
Fantastic video Nick. It was a beautiful watch created by a skilled watchmaker. Just as well there are still skilled watchmakers like you to bring it back for it's second life. Nice job . ( I like your choice of band)
As much as I enjoyed this restoration some commentary and would’ve been nice. Also, knowing what was wrong with it and what was fixed along with what type of oils and greases were used since I only saw some pieces being lubricated while others got no lubrication/grease at all. I commend you for restoring this beautiful timepiece, but this could’ve of bee so much better.
Agreed, I would love to know what he's using to clean the dial without taking off any of the markers.
Your videos are simply incredible, keep up the great work
That was truly amazing, and the jazz wasn't bad either.
@@jtreg I'm actually more of a rock guy, than a jazz fan.
Spectacular, very spectacular work!!!!!!!!!!
Can`t believe how good looking it come out, well done man.

I would also like to know!!!
Me too.

#2 , kill the music and talk to us , please .
Hello from Ukraine, very high quality content, definitely like!
You are interesting job very good vedio and I enjoyed your works all the best brother
I am surprised at how well the watch recovered from the damage. Well done!
Incredible! No gaskets anywhere on vintages... so delicate. But its still so amazing the work that goes into a watch of that age. Thanks for doing what you do.
How can anybody give this video a thumbsdown is beyond me. Bloody amazing video and memory 12 out 10 from me...cheers ~baden~
Beautiful restauration,as for 45 min counter dial it is probably one of "soccer-football" chronograps so it is made to measure half time in game .Great job.
Excelente trabajo amigo muy bien hecho 👍.
Consulta para limpiar la esfera de reloj que líquidos ocupo?
Nice work!!!! I have a question to what solutions you used on the dial to get it to look so good? Thank you for the beautiful video.
Hello, may I know what did you use to clean the dial, please?
that dial restoration solution is magic. What solution is that? Does it also work for oxidized dial?
The process with great music!, well done!!
Brought back for the dead for another life time for someone to cherish by a master watchmaker salu very impressed
Good video!!! I have a Breitling Premier and I also restored it. I just didn't clean the movement. Because I'm a motorcycle mechanic ehehe
This would be a great skill to learn . Are there places where you can learn this.
I love the magic moment when it returns to life and begins to tick. Also, looking at the after pics.
I’m in awe how many parts are in that timepiece and you know how it all goes back together! Bravo!
Nice restoration. Very good job indeed. It's the first time i see someone diving a dial in a solution. I guess, from previous questions it must be a secret. Isn't it?
I'm finding it too
It is gratifying to know that@ 71 my lifelong craft will still be in good hands when i am gone.good wishes for the future.John Anderson, Watch/ clock repaier
Wonderful ending always my favourite to see it finished 100/100
amazing work, good to see these old watches coming back to life! Hopefully it will remain as beautiful as it is now!
Lovely piece of work. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed every minute.
That's more than a restoration, that's brought back from the dead. Great job!
What solution do you use to clean the watch face?
Pq mejor no pusiste el tema de la pantera rosa😂
Wonderful work....such precision.... and a beautiful timepiece restored to full function. What a very worthwhile thing it is that you do Mr. Hacko. :-)
Do you sell the pieces you have restored ? You do an amazing job really ! Congrats !
Its like you saved a life and the heart is now beating at the right rate!! - thanks much appreciated!
Well done sir. Am I the only one by saying the watch looks too new now?
What product do you use to clean the dial?
¡qué la gente no puede cuidar nada!😠
Don't understand how anyone could give this a thumbs down.
Sundial fans.
Apple watch enthusiasts.
As Mark Mc pointed, the minute has 45 seconds.. Who would print such a dial?
That mystery is yet to be resolved... One thing is certain: the minute counter and seconds hand subdial are identical and printed at the same time. Genuinely unique dial.
Master Watchmaker. Really enjoying the channel. on the subject of dials, why do watch and clock makers use IIII to mark the 4th hour and not the correct Roman numeral IV ?
@@MasterWatchmaker That must be a misstake made when printing the dial. And then QC did not catch it.
Inspirational. Elegant. Ethical and respectful. Bellissimo.
Odlicno,majstore
That one can even remember where everything goes in the correct sequence is what amazes me
I wish all RUclips channels had your good taste in music.
including this one .. thank my deity for the mute button
I’d love to know what schmoo you used to clean the dial, and how you knew the numbers weren’t going to float off!
Como ficou lindo igual quando saiu de fábrica, um verdadeiro artesão.Parabéns.Jason/Goiânia Goiás Central Brazil...
Impressive. Really interesting pice! I cant belive how thick the original crystal was. I hope you do some vintage Longines chronographs. Those are nower to find as a restoration video. I would love to see it operated by your hand after it is done as well as in the stoped position. I really enjoyed the video and love the music as well. Keep on :)
I have to check my junk box - there has to be a Longines or two there :-) stay tuned!
@@MasterWatchmaker wow! I will be on the edge of my seat at all times. Looking foword to it
Somewhat boring BUT oddly very satisfying to watch these being restored to working order
Quite a dramatic restoration. Nicely done.
Just too good for words I love every minute of it well done, I like to see more many thanks.
Profesyonel işçilik 👍
Love the strap pairing. I’m surprised the movement was in as good of shape as it was.
11 morrons who dislike the video
Hopefully the customer won't destroy it again
I think that dial looks great with the damage marks showing. Restored beautifully. Thanks Mr. Hacko. Nice job.
Wow what happened ? Did the wearer get run over by a asphalt grader/ smoother (steamroller)? Interesting music! Very late 50’s!seems highly worn!what was on the end of the brush? Did a good job! Wow white cuffs you’ve done this a long time! Are you as old as the watch?there are no jewels in it!Handsome watch!
What are the fluids you used to clean the mainplates and especially the dial?
4:31 for deoxidation of plates: home made solution of vinegar and baking soda. 4 tablespoons of baking soda for every cup of vinegar. Dial cleaning is bit tricky. Thank you for watching!
@@MasterWatchmaker Tahnks for the quick answer!
what did you clean the dial with?
I have a Longines and a Titus geneve both in rose gold essentially identical to this Breitling wonderful movements beautiful work my friend:)
Todo mi respeto y admiración para este tipo de trabajos, saludos desde México 😎👍
Sweet video and nice music. I Love your cleaning machine ❤️❤️❤️ what is the name of the solution you are using there to clean the movement? And those tools? Great video, and music! Thank you In a advance from one repairer to another! 🙏🙏🙏😊
