John Perry Barlow has been a cattle rancher in Wyoming, has written songs for the Grateful Dead, co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and is currently working on a project to turn sewage into jetfuel. He likes open range, open doors, open season, open source, open standards, open government, open hearts, and open minds. He fears only fear and wants to be a good ancestor.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
What a great storyteller. John left this world a much better place than when he found it. Rest in Peace.
I love this:
Well, you know, every soul comes into the world to take a curriculum, and some of us are taking Basket Weaving and some of us are taking Astrophysics 406. And I'm pleased to be taking the harder courses.
Me, too!
It is simple, yet profound.
Life got us lookin' like Elon Musk over here
This world needs more John perry Barlow’s.
I find myself coming back to this exact point with my ten-year-old son very often. He is sensitive and usually reflects accurately the world around him. Now I find JPB talking spontaneously about our 'original sin' of self-loathing and the need to be open to the love we deserve, and I realize that there is a critical mass of self-criticism happening all around us. The hard courses are there in the world "rolling in ecstasy at our feet." Stay silent and learn their lessons. Beautiful stuff.
Don't bend; don't water it down; don't try to make it logical; don't edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly
"Articulate Authenticity," like JPB is so rare...a great loss...we are all just human beings who want to love and be loved...a poet indeed.
RIP John. I hope and pray that you are now reunited with your beloved. ❤️🙏🏼❤️
Hello there
How're you doing ?
goodbye mr barlow, you were one of the best
Barlow speaks so movingly about Gilbert Gil (14:21), the great Brazilian composer who died 2 days ago. A dear friend of his, along with Bob Weir and Neal Cassidy. We are lucky to know of them all.
I can relate! God bless John Perry Barlow.
Thank you Mr. Barlow. Quite a beautiful and soothing story.
By learning how to accept love from other people, yes that is the message, and find ourselves worthy
What a spectacular incarnation he lived. This man was a light. Thank you for all you left behind for us, JPB, you great ancestor. May we all walk together in love towards the brighter future you helped lay the foundation for.
Thanks for this. Love does indeed forgive everything. R.I.P.
We need more JPBs now more than ever. What a beautiful talk.
BEAUTIFUL. May you soar in bliss, John.
thanks for all the media & emotions.
JPB was an invaluable man of thought and depth...RIP
Just finished "Mother American Night", this Ted talk is the closing chapter; but hearing him present it is very powerful. In the early 2000s JPB was working with some folks on a process that turned sewage into crude oil and fresh water! He claimed they had a working pilot plant, but ran out of funding in 2015, the website still exists, but couldn't find anything after 2015, would be nice if some of these Tech Billionaires would pick it up for a pet project, could be a game-changer for the planet, and a great legacy for Mr Barlow. (Algae Systems)
Rest well, JPB, rest well, my friend!
Thank you for the music!!!
RIP John
"couldn't be openner" gotta love John Perry Barlow
Amazing man, amazing heart, and he could talk about root beer and make it sound interesting! Thanks John.
I love going out onto stage without a clue of what to do, the energy and the fear seems so intense and worth it!
ANYONE MISS JPB AS MUCH AS I DO!
One of the great lyricist story tellers gone (~):}
True. That will stand the test of time.
Yes love forgives every thing,...Great Amazing ...
beautifully said! I'm a Buddhist, I have slightest different views, but well said! Thank you for this talk.
Hello there
How're you doing ?
Wordsmith and a genuine human
I worked at the Bar X Ranch in Cora WY, summer of 1982 with John Perry Barlow the owner of the ranch and writer for the Grateful Dead. I remember many late nights or after midnight when John would ride back to the ranch in his 68 VW Van. So I get that song on those long road trips to the desert and Reno. On one of those trips he came back and said, "Dean I'm so sorry. While driving I got an idea for the Dead and didn't have any cassettes to record it except those sermons your dad sent me" I said, "No problem John, my dad loved to preach on the resurrection and maybe your record company will listen to his side thinking you've come up with some really wild lyrics for a Dead song and they'll publish it." He responded, "That would just be God's good humor wouldn't it." We both laughed and hit the hay. BTW I slept in the same bunk JFK JR. slept on a few summers earlier when "I became a man at the Bar X" he wrote later in a George Magazine editorial I ran across in an airport. I too received my calling from God at the Bar X that summer to become an urban pastor and now missionary with my OB/Gyn wife in rural Kenya.
A true inspiration!
Oneness with and in your one , John , love you .
Perry Barlow R.I.P MAN🍷 💻
If anyone is interested in a fascinating 5-minute read, take a look at Barlow’s Wikipedia entry. What an astounding life.
Fantastic storyteller, with a profound message.
This is GREAT, Barlow was smart and cool (period)
Wonderful. Absolutely amazing.
Thank u all very much . well said .
One of my tippy top Tx!
RIP old friend (~);}
Did you know him?
RIP to a man we all so much to.
The greatest love of all was when God sent his son into this world to be sacrificed for sin that whoever believes in him( Jesus Christ) shall be saved. Great speech John!
This story really started to soar and expand into something beautiful, then he seemed to cut it down with his sarcastic criticism of republicans and monotheism
Maybe he found himself too timid to speak on the Cross he wears around his neck?
Anyways JPB is a huge inspiration for me, and I have nothing but respect for the man. It was just an unexpected turn he took at the end.
Amazing...
That was beautiful.
A Saint of Circumstance
Amazing
Hello there
How're you doing ?

Why is this a dark time in human history?
Needed this.
What Kafka says is true. But do you think anyone listens?

But it's the truth even if it didn't happen.~Ken Kesey
Passenger was writing a song for him.
fyi: The Dinosaur is only metaphorical :(
Has John Perry Barlow self medicated the pronoia state due to the think tanks and advertisement agencies that promote funding from products that pass through his company.
What do you mean?
A beautiful if somewhat lame, and somewhat pretentious conversation. It wasn't firmly established how love forgives everything, or indeed anything.
A lot of Ted talks blow. Barlow's work was, in my opinion, a lot bigger than a little snippet to be fed to people for easy consumption.
I'm not sure exactly what his point was either, except that he doesn't like Republicans or monotheism
We're created to worship God .. not a man. The only God who has no son, children or partners (as this would be associating imperfection [having offspring, associates, etc.], with perfection (The Only One God who the first man Adam worshiped directly, Most Powerful, Most Great), and all humans should worship Him (The Most worthy of Worship). directly, as He is the All-Hearing and Knowing. So we dont' need an intercessor or priest to convey to the All-Knowing what He already knows!
!I'm not typing this to argue just to educated. Please for those who have closed hateful hearts.
Billie Edwards so anyone who questions you should and wants to be educated? No I don't. believe in your world, that's the only way to remain within others justice, in other words think for yourself without interfering with others. So stop going around preaching and let people learn their own way, we're here to decide our own lives, just the fact that you don't have to believe in God makes everything skeptical. Belief is just a format like that of a website like RUclips.
I have an open loving heart. But I have a different set of beliefs than you do.. When you just aimlessly spray your beliefs onto others, it pushes them away.
Thomas Bell that's my point though...
Billie Edwards the "God" that Adam worshipped was one of the Elohim. Some of the Elohim were petty and cruel like this Jehovah others fought against him because of his cruelty in the way he treated their own creation, mankind. All these stories that gave rise to the Judea Christian religions came from Sumer and there are excellent records of these beings and how they went about things. The true creator of the universe would never get caught up in petty human pursuits like worship and punishment of its creation because this creator would be so far above its creation like a microbe to a human.... Use your God given talent to use critical thinking when reading the scriptures and read more than just your cults scriptures and you will see the similarities. Put yourself in the shoes of an Indian man born into Hinduism, should he be cursed to eternity in hellfire just because he never heard of your God? Common sense says no.
Mr. Barlow, I forgive you for your prejudice and arrogance against conservatives whom you apparently do not know or understand. Perhaps you could make an effort to see from the perspective of those you find beneath you. 🙏🏼 May you be blessed with loving kindness toward all.
