      +afd3 y53 There is the story that Tal was given this study when traveling in a taxi to solve, and so he did. The origin of the story is unclear, as well as for a long time was the origin of this study. Years later, in 1980, it was published by Gijs van Breukelen in Schakend Nederland. He explained to have shown it around before, and there are the origins of this story. If the story with Tal is true, we can only assume it was someone who saw the study from either Gijs van Breukelen or one of the friends he showed it to. Now you will ask, what are the odds? Well, let us not forget that Tal was widely known. So the taxi driver will have recognized Tal. Possibly he was just there waiting for Tal to take a taxi because he wanted to show it. Possibly it was coincidence. Possibly it never happened. Who knows? The fact is, the study circulated for a long time before officially published, and legends were associated with it. If there is any proof that Tal really solved it in a taxi, I would be glad to have it.

      William Jefferson My point was that, even if someone like Tal could sit there and work out the mating idea in the middle of a classical game after an hour or two of play and pressure (which is doubtful in itself), I highly doubt that black finds all of the best moves as well in any case under the same conditions.

  • @andrewhall6342
    @andrewhall6342 9 лет назад +137

    I have never seen a sequence where a player under promotes twice to save himself from mate. Usually you see under promotions to create checkmate (with a knight) or to prevent a stalemate (with knight, bishop, or rook) This is EPIC. I would love to see a sequence which features a brilliant use of the En Passant, or multiple En Passant's.

      +andrew hall Here is a puzzle for you then: wKg8 Pb7 c7 d7 e7 f7 g7, bKg6 Pa2 f4 g2 h2 - Black is to move (mini-spoiler: his best line starts with 1.-a1Q), White to draw. It was published in December 2011 in a German magazine.

      +andrew hall Here is the en passant puzzle you requested. It is by Vladimir Korolkov, Shakhmaty v SSSR 1940, special prize. wKg1 Rb6 Rg6 Sf1 Pb2 c2 d2 e2 f2 g2, bKc5 Ra1 Rh8 Ba7 Sa8 Pc4 d4 e4 f4 g4 h4. White is to move and draw.

    Jim Plaskett set up a board at the Brussels tournament in 1987, there were GMs and Super GMs (Including Kasparov, Karpov, Short, & Tal) at the tournament and none of them were able to figure it out despite hours of calculation. Until Tal left the room after unsuccessfully trying to decipher it for ten minutes, and came back about an hour later and solved it. Apparently he had worked it out while walking in the park.

    I found an interesting novelty while on chessbase. My pc with houdini 1.5 finds Nf6+ in 49 seconds and gives it a positive evaluation in 1 minute and 17 seconds. However if you put a pawn on h2 for white then it takes houdini 6 minutes and 51 seconds to reach a positive evaluation even though it only looks at Nf6+.

    Or you could try to get the following position when you are down a piece: Your king on a1, a bishop on b2 and a knight on c4, your oponent has a queen and a king somewhere on the board (say queen on b8 and king on d1). An unexperienced oponent will probably try to separate your king from your pieces or to enter your little fortress while you can - with a smile on your face - jump around with your king a2-a1-b1 and your bishop a1-b2 in response to any attack that comes up. Beautiful draw!

    I ran Houdini 2.0c x64 on this puzzle and it did, in fact, fail to get the first move correct, Nf6+. It thought Black was winning (-1.35/23 ply), and this I believe was because it was so focused on queening the pawn. When I played the Nf6+ move, Houdini still thought Black was winning (-5.45/22) but by a larger margin. It got this lost position because it wouldn't give up the knight on h5 by playing the Bc2+!! move. Once I made it play that move, it found the wins in all lines.
