Hi Matti, welcome back to Europe! Your photowalk with simple "new" photo equipment from Lumix and the 20mm Lumix-Leica has me excited. My GX80 is always at hand and it's fun to see that the pictures are not worse than those shot with the Lumix S5. And: You are home again.

I'm using my OM-D E-M10 mk ii with Oly 25mm F1.8 and 17mm F1.8--my first digital ILC and I'm still loving it! But I'm thinking of getting one of the Pentax Q family because MFT is just so heavy and bulky. 😊😊😊

This video is very refreshing! It’s true a camera feels new when it hasn’t been used for a while. And your statement about no pressure on recreational photographers is spot on! That’s how I feel since photography is just a hobby. I liked how you felt the difference between Finland and S Asia! Travel sure gives us a lot of perspective and experiences!

Dear Matti, thank you very much for your new video back in Helsinki! Very easy-going in the park, inspires me to take great photos in "normal" places too. I love it compact too, my legendary Lumix GX7 with the 20mm 1.7 or the 12-32mm lens are a great combination, take good photos and don't take much space. The Lumix GM5 would still be a good alternative, but it's hard to get. Many greetings from the Loreley (River Rhine/Germany).

Today I photographed with my loved GX80 and 1958 Pentax auto takumar 55mm f2. Very nice combo. Sharp with nice colors. 4K video in these cameras is very good also.

Everyone has their own interest, my interest is human beings and I have a bunch of epic photos. Fortunately every year I spend three months in Thailand, people are easy, you can photograph a child without problem and as I speak their language I approach and converse with people in the street (and the Thai is very eager to know). In Phuket the bar district was for me a gold mine for street photography, Pattaya I dream of knowing because now I live in the hinterland, what I will call the real Thailand far from tourists. In my country? It's harder much harder to find something "epic"... :-)
People photography is indeed much easier in some countries compared to other countries. In many places people come to you and ask you to take their photo and in many places people are reluctant to pose at all.
I love your photographs. I think people can choose what they want to photograph without trying to photograph something people may not see. Even so called cliche subjects can be photographed in a different way. My approach is to tell a story and or use the elements of what we see, e.g. line, colour. shape, perspective, contrast, composition, space,light etc. They can all be used well. Your approach to photography is an excellent way because we might discover a new way to see. Kind regards Chris Brown.

Definitely agree that non-professional cameras should be small and compact! It's a pity that Panasonic don't seem to think that way anymore. Hopefully the recent demand for compact cameras (X100V, GR3) will put them back on the path of compact cameras like the GM series. G100 is small, but still a monster compared to a GM and considerably heavier!

I really love my GX-850 combined with the 15mm 1.7 Leica. The balance isn't too bad, and having the lens mounted aperture ring combined with the dial on the body gives me that two dial control to dial in settings easily. Don't really miss IBIS. 16MP image size seems to be just fine, esp for street photos. I have GX-9, G9, and EP-7 bodies but 75% of the time, I grab this combo when heading out, sometimes bringing the 12-32 kit lens as a backup in case I want a bit of reach. There's something awesome unfussy about small+simple camera setups.

You've got some nice gear! How do you find the GX9 vs the EP-7? I have the GX7 and EM5 Mk III and just ordered a used GX850. (I also had a GX85, which I gave to my daughter.)
Those last days, I shoot mainly with the GM1 paired with the lumix 42.5 mm f/1.7 for street and portrait and it’s amazing … small, discret, beautiful rendering 😀

I’ve just gotten in to MFT. I went with a GX9 and the 12-35mm f2.8 and the 35-100mm f2.8 (I also have the 12-32 kit for travel). I liked it so much, I also “needed” to try the Olympus E-M5 II (since I found a cheap one). Can’t decide which I like better. They both have their benefits 😊

I did start just like you. After the oly M5ii, came the G9, oly EM1 iii, pen f, and last gx85. Size and weight vs specs, the gx85 is most used camera!
Interesting, because the Panasonic GX85 was the last camera I picked up too. I combined it with the cheaper Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 option, which is a very good budget lens.

I love small micro 4/3 cameras, still use my GM1 occasionally, I wish Panasonic would bring out an updated rangefinder style camera, I am sure there is a big market for that.
I'm with you 100%! But alas, don't know if Panasonic has lost interest in the rangefinder style cameras, or in Micro Four Thirds completely. It's been years since the GX9 and G9. And no more GF or GM cameras. There was the misstep known as the G100, so that doesn't count.
If I was living in Finland, I would run away from the winter every year! Maybe not as far as Malaysia, but definitely south. Like Cyprus or Sicily... :)
I had one of those but sold it to buy the G100. Much as I liked it, the lack of a viewfinder was annoying to me.

all my cameras (3) are panasonic and I also enjoy my panasonic extensive collection of
lenses. both micro 4/3 and full-fame. switching them around to create different combos is always a treat, so I totally understand how you feel. zen billings in canada

Never thought of my GX-9 as being very large. 😲 I do have a PEN PL-8 which is a little smaller. I have been using the Olympus 25mm f1.8 quite a bit on the GX-9 and the Lumix 14mm on my tiny camera, the PL-8. After using various widths, I seem to gravitate on back to the 25mm or 30mm macro in Lumix, for my street photography, though the wide 14mm and tight 45mm Olympus surely works when wanting those special looks to the street life. The 25mm f1.4 lenses you have seems most fitting for the G9, or maybe the G95. Enjoy the sun! We are experiencing some very odd weather here on the Central Coast of California, with cold weather and drizzle - even rain! When the heater runs in Paso Robles, CA in the Summer, something is wrong. 😳🤠 Take care, Loren

With a heavier lens, I often accidentally touch some control on my GX850, while adjusting grip. One day I activated exposure bracketing by accident, and combined with the camera’s low speed switch to electronic shutter, I struggled for a while to figure out what was giving such weird exposures. I’d press shutter then see images previewing, then hear a shutter. I thought something was wrong, but then remembered how slow the mechanical shutter is. It’s definitely strange, coming from newer cameras, to have it flip to e-shutter in certain conditions.
You could deactivate some of the buttons to avoid accidental functions. Only a suggestion, of course.

The GX80 + Leica 15mm f1.7 is the Most adorable compact set for my use. The Leica 9mm, 15mm, 25mm and 45mm and the Sigma 56mm f1.4 are amazing.

In the past week I have used an OM-D E-M1x, an E-M1 II, a G9, an S1R. The first has GPS, I think if Panasonic were serious about landscape photography the S1R would have too.
A GPS should be a standard feature.
@@mattisulanto It was a feature of my Canon 6D and all later Canon fullframe DSLRs. I couldn't bring myself to buy the RP or R, and had decide that good Canon cameras are too big and heavy, so I don't know which have GPS. The first two did not. However, there is a GPS accessory, GP-E2 that works on lot of Canon cameras including the amateur EOS 77D. The problems are remembering to pack it, and remembering to fit it. And if you use multiple cameras....
Thanks Matti, I recall with fondness my first micro four third camera, the Panasonic GM1 - its very size was why I left my Canon and went for this. Alas, over many years my gear has turned big and unwieldy again - actually it became a beast (EM1.3 and Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7), but a darned powerful beast. I miss the days of small cameras - been waiting for Panasonic for a new updated GM camera, but those days just ain't coming...

I love my GX-800 for it’s compactness and versatility, but really struggle with the display. Taking photos in bright sunlight is a challenge
I can be a minor problem in really bright light. You'll get a surprise composition every time😀
Hi Matti, I am getting curious about that gx880, but it seems to move to electronic shutter if you need to go to shorter sutter times than 1/500, how do you work with this shutter situation?
I mentioned that in the video. I just use the ES and don't worry too much😀
I have the GX850, which is essentially the same camera, and I normally shoot in aperture priority. I barely notice when the camera switches to electronic shutter. If I were trying to shoot sports, it might be an issue, but used for street photography or travel photography, rolling shutter is never apparent. With the 20/1.7 and 14/2.5 it’s a little like having the GRIII and GRIIIx at the same time, but with a tilt screen.

@@scottfineshriber5051 many thanks for the added information! Yeah might get an old new stock GX800 (which is the GX850). Maybe it's one of those cases where people judge a camera before getting a feeling on its character with strengths and weaknesses.
Lumix G90 + Leica 25mm 1.4 - Balanced and Lovely 😊. I'm kidding, but the G90 (I already have the G9) when you hold it in your hand feels much smaller than it looks and the ergonomics are fantastic

Yeah. That lens. I have recently and at long last replaced the Leica 25 I traded some years ago with the mark 2. It still has the almost 3D look and the lens hood is still horrible. Why on earth did they make is letter box so it cannot be reversed?
Fortunately it will take the tidy JJC Leica-type screw-on (LH-46GF) I had in the bag. I have not noticed any vignetting, it is supposed to work on a 14mm.
Thanks. The hood from the 45mm macro fits and looks so much better, but it also can't be reversed. I guess any third party option is better than the original.

Your choice of residence is probably interesting too. If you spend less than you earn you'll be just fine pretty much anywhere in the world😀
I wish I had got a gx880 instead of an gx85 .. which is just a little too big and heavy for pocket. I don't like the 16mp sensor color balance, for some reason the same yellow tint appears in all the dpreview photos for the cameras that use the 16, while the earlier 12mp or later 20mp ones don't have this problem.
I think the gx880 is called something else in US market .. maybe the gx850? Just to get super confusing for me when I google and the results for gx85 and 850 are all mixed together.
I think both has the same sensor. I do have both, but the gx85 ibis makes the difference for me.
This generation of Panasonic cameras omit a optical low pass filter, which is something I really like. The photos have a sharpness that's unexpected from MFT size sensor.
Nice to see you wielding Micro Four Thirds gear again Matti! You kinda lost me with your forays into Ricoh, full frame, etc. By coincidence I just ordered a used GX850 just mere minutes before finding your video! I already have the GX7 to go with my E-M5 Mk III, but I think this little GX850 will find a spot in my kit. I really wanted a GM1/GM5, but it looks like the GX850 will more than suffice. (I was amazed to discover that the GX850 can produce technically superior images to the GX7, which I absolutely love.)
I use all formats and brands according to my mood😀

I love the GX800. BTW, your noise gate was too aggressive.
What noise gate? I shoot RAW and my noise setting is at LR default as always. I don’t use any extra noise reduction.
@@mattisulanto I was talking about your audio in the video or maybe it was an expander or compressor. I listen with headphones and every time you speak it was disconcerting.
Oh yes, the audio. I messed up the audio, wrong settings and at first I wasn’t going to publish this video at all.
I went for the 40mm on the G9 to get something compact but still closer to 50mm than going for a 35mm. Assume it would be a good combo with the GX880.
If you are referring to the 20mm F1.7, it's another lovely lens which I also have.

Forgot to ask. I bought mine second hand but it didn't include a sun hood. Is that normally included. I checked to see if I could find a replacement from Panasonic but don't think they have one so perhaps it was never included.
@@michaelscaplis To my knowledge there is no first party hood, but some third party ones are available.
I love GM1 + 20mm/1.7
My casual walk around camera is a GM1 and I frequently shoot it with my Leica 25 1.4. Great combo.

The Lumix 40mm f1.7 is a perfect match for small bodies. Excellent image quality, nice compromise between normal & WA, pancake size. It's on my Lumix G3 almost all the time.
