    The camera is aimed at beginners, that's why video recording is automatic to keep it simple, it's not for 'sad' users who want pro quality from amateur gear.
    It does everything so well that a camera aimed at amateurs should so how is it sad?

    Actually, you can manually set the shutter speed for recording video, although you are somewhat limited. In the video menu under "flicker reduction" you can set the shutter speed to 1/50, 1/60, 1/100 or 1/120. I set it to 1/60 since I record at 4K/30fps. Another weird thing is that the menu hides the ISO settings under "sensitivity". Probably to help out newcomers.

    I use a GX800 for street photography, and it's brilliant. Tiny, discreet, weighs nothing with the 12-32 or 20mm 1.7. Image quality is excellent. Touch screen is very responsive. If you want to travel light, get one.

    Damn, I have this camera for about 1.5 ish years now, I got an absolute bargain because the shop I bought it from had a massive clearance on it about 170 USD ish new. I am by no means a photographer or videographer but have gotten into photography 10 fold with this little guy and love it.
    I was getting pretty confused/pondering why you didn't like this camera until you said video. I don't really take videos with it so I never noticed this limitation ^^; but I agree that must be annoying. I guess I never noticed this limitation because the only time I record video with it is with a 35m manual lense! XP
    True there is no headphone jack on this camera either but the microphone I found in it is rather excellent (with no wind ofc) finding it better than some higher-priced built-in mics on some DSLRs.
    Yes tho, the pictures it takes is so crisp and wonderful and the 4K auto it does take is also very high quality, this camera got me fairly invested in the m4/3 format and have now plentiful m/43 lenses, mostly Pana, but one Neewer and one Olympus. I will definitely keep on the m4/3 train for a while and maybe choose to upgrade to a GH5 or smthn in the future.

  • @cronicasdesdelacripta

    Thank you, I thought it was getting crazy 😁 it’s true. The camera has some issues that I knew before buy it:
    1- No external flash Socket.
    2- No external mic input.
    3- No external hardware to charge the batt (Panasonic’s issue but you can buy one).
    4- Battery life a little limited. (If you buy a 2nd unit, better for you).
    5- No optical visor (in a sunny day probably you will need to roll a black shirt around your head to see the screen in several conditions).
    I’m happy with camera because I bought it with a great discount but I saw the matter with manual video. Not really a big problem for me but it’s very curious.
    Anyway not sufficient to be “the saddest camera ever”.

  • @hever9
    @hever9 3 года назад +5

    Actually you can choose shutter speed for video manually in Motion Picture settings (Flkr Decrease) you can choose 1/50, 1/60, 1/100, 1/120 and when you start recording you can lock (freeze) auto exposure. Just set some Fn button for AF/AE LOCK and press it during recording (for some reason does not work in M mode, use S mode instead.... M mode= full auto rec mode).

  • @dogusatasoy

    Ok, since i'm planning to buy a clean used one because i need a carry all the time camera with a 20mm f1.7 lens. But I'll definitely shoot videos with it too. So I didnt use it on this specific camera but I'm kindly asking one of you to check this thing;
    In 4K photo mode, there should be options for whole manual settings. Secondly you can change how the 4K photo mode starts, so from the settings set it to record when button pressed stop when button pressed again. Than you'll have a 4K video with all manual controls. It was also almost same with the GX80 which i owned for a while. And also for G9 it is the best tricky way to record almost open gate 5.9K videos.

    am i wrong, or does the gx800 have the most dynamic range out of any mtf camera at around 13.3 stops? i would of loved to see what you could do with the raw photos, from what i read, at 100 iso it's a secret gem. i have a 25mm f/0.85 that i think would pair perfectly with this for the kinda stuff i shoot. from all the stats ive seen, it's actually a very happy camera, but if you have slow glass and are a videographer only, it's not meant for you.

  • @KitBetts-Masters

    Hello, have you discovered that you can get full manual control by using 4K photo mode (start stop)? You can set video aspect ratio to 16:9 as well and although on the camera it will show you the 4K photo interface, but on the card there will be an MP4 video file.
    Bit of a work around, and not sure how long it can record for, should be good enough for your broll though!
    Just bought one and I'm quite pleased with it as a Bcam for my gx8. 🦍🙂

      @@lukejones1244 no, just that if you shoot in photo 4k mode, you get a video file saved to the card. So it's the same as a video mode. Weird work around but at least it's possible, as this was a big thing which put me off the gx800!

    you could use 4k photo start/stop as a manual video mode but i don't know how long can it record in this mode. I can't find much information on this mode, only some 3-7s long clips so if somebody who's reading this has that camera - can you check for how long can you record in 4k photo start/stop mode? i was thinking of getting this camera for my fpv drone because if it doesn't have any limit in 4k s/s mode i can "record" in 4k 4:3 30fps which is ideal for stabilization in gyroflow and lens correction

    I snagged one of these used a while back as an alternative to a Ricoh GR that could double as a lightweight backup for my main M 4/3 camera that I take travelling. For a fraction of the price of a GR, it's nearly as good and with the interchangeable lens mount, can run any other lenses if the main rig is out for any reason. it is good for low profile street work if just using the stock pancake. My only gripe with it really (keeping its price point in mind) is the somewhat over sensitive control wheel, that I find often leads to settings getting changed by accident. Something has to give when you shrink the size to these proportions though and nobody else is making anything this small and this good with interchangeable lenses at the moment.

    Thanks for this video, I immediately stopped following the many GX800 some people were selling used for quite cheap. Even at below 200€, the sacrifice of not having manual control in video mode is just too much. I don't really need the greatest camera or a microphone input, since I have a Panasonic G7 as my main, but having a camera that goes to 1600+ ISO levels or strange shutter speeds even if I don't want that? An automatic no. Well, maybe if I found it below 100€, but that's not gonna happen.
    As a little critique, I felt you rambled on a little too much and took some time to get to the main point, I think planning or scripting a little bit of the video could have helped you there. But great info anyways! For some reason, I found 0 reviews that explained the automatic video mode issue, and again, thanks for this, you saved me some money that would've gone to waste.

    Where we would we be without the vloggers struggling to understand why by far the cheapest compact ILC has less facilities than more expensive kit. That is the saddest thing and vloggers tend to struggle with these cheap primarily still cameras just because they cannot vlog with them. The M200 with the uninspiring 15-45mm comes in at £569 compared with the GX800 with the 12-32mm at £349. I am not starting with cameras or a beginner and this attitude always seems so patronising, especially when constantly reiterated with the affordable gear for what is a handy little bit of ultra compact ultra cheap kit in its own right for absolutely anyone. It is getting worse and worse as it is difficult to see anything less than £2,000 in the lists of new releases and commentators as much as makers losing touch with the less affluent sector of the market.

    • @davelordy
      @davelordy 2 года назад

      Yep ! Agree 100% . . . I think the issue is that vloggers like this often have access to a lot of high end gear - even if only on loan / or for review - so the standard required for something to pass muster just keeps getting ratcheted up as new gear comes out . . . I actually paid just £151 for my GX800 with the 12-32 kit lens (thank you, the gods of ebay). Like you I'm not starting with cameras / not a beginner, I've been through all the lenses you could imagine, the f0.95s the £2k anamorphics (10 years ago, when £2k would get you something amazing on the secondhand market), all the usual suspects in bodies, the full frame stuff like 5Ds and so on . . . and I am absolutely blown away by the GX800, I love it and have just recommended it to my 15 year old son, above saving up for a secondhand DSLR, as he's taking photography next year . . . like you say some of these vloggers are losing touch, I will now often see video where they review - for example - a great new 'affordable' lens, and then tell you it's only $1,899 : )

      @@davelordy Thanks for the kind reply. Photography for the hobbyist is in a dark place at the moment especially with the current heavyweight marketing of 'full frame'.
