I chose an original LX100 as a complement to my extensive MFT kit mainly because of 1) the EVF & handling, and 2) the much brighter lens. The LX100's lens is two full stops brighter than the GX850's 12-32 kit zoom, and this lets me shoot in dim light without carrying the brighter primes I'd need for the GX850. For me, the LX100 is simply a more versatile 1-lens/1-body solution for those times when I might encounter dim environments and I don't want to carry, say, my GX9 and a handful of lenses. Makes a great famcam.
I shoot mostly Fuji & Nikon gear. We were taking a trip to Ireland and I wanted to go light so I bought an LX100 II for the trip. Have to say I was very impressed with the LX100 II. I would have liked to have some longer glass but it wasn’t critical. On returning I found a deal on a GX85 so I picked it up. These two small cameras will now be my core travel kit solution. You have a great channel and just would like to say thanks for the quality content.
Good comparison and one of special interest to me because I was deciding between a GX85 and LX100 6 months ago. I had a G85 with several lenses including the Lumix 15, 20, 25 and 42.5mm primes so I bought a GX85 body and have been very happy. I think the small M43 format cameras are well served by the small primes. Zooming with your feet is easy.
I think I'd be down for the LX100 II if it had dust sealing. Part of my reason for shifting towards M43 is that my past fixed lens compact cameras has serious dust problems with no way to clean them myself.
I use the LX10 for my pocket camera. I’m now using the LX100 m2 as my all purpose camera. I choose it over my Olympus and LUMIX MFT cameras because I love the immediate access to shutter speed and aperture. These are the most important controls to me. As far as the interchangeable lenses go I find I seldom use them. The moderate zoom is all I need, and the LX100 is faster than the 12-32 kit lens, which Is my main lens on the MFT cameras.
I just bought the LUMIX GX880 or GF10 here in the Philippines and I’ve been enjoying it for almost a month since it’s my first travel camera as a beginner. I’m still saving for the LX100 though because I’ve been loving the camera since it came out!
I used to have a LX5 which was a great little camera for use when hiking, backpacking and camping, until one day when powering on, the lens stopped moving half way out of the rest position. The camera was now useless, but most annoying was that an excellent sharp lens, being fixed to the body was also of no further use. I then decided to never buy another fixed-lens camera. A used GF1 was purchased along with the 12-32mm lens and this was a great substitute for the LX5. I've since replaced the GF1 with a GX80, using the same 12-32mm lens and this is a great combination for its intended use. I've since added the tiny 35-100mm lens
Really helpful comparison for me because it confirms I was right adding a GX85 to my G85 as a pocketable camera. IBIS is essential for me to use all my m4/3 lenses and the EVF is my natural way of shooting. Pancakes, prime and zoom make the camera pocketable and even the Oly 45mm fits in my coat and opens up short telephoto territory. I have kwondered about small bodies and compact fixed lens Panasonic’s, but this detailed comparison really settles the issue. Pen F? I got my G85 for about US $300 refurbished, but effectively new. The Pen F was US$1000 on Amazon and well over that used from Japan on EBay. The G85 is fast becoming my favourite camera. Good channel.
Has not the smart phone replaced there point and shoot cameras? My iPone is compact and takes good photos. Amazing really. My real camera is the GH5. Still I understand where you’re coming from and appreciate the time you spend on these reviews. You have integrity. Regular follower.
Thanks. It depends what you like to use, of course. My iPhone is awesome too. Both these cameras have MFT sensor and the image quality is essentially the same as on the GH5. Not identical, but very close.
I'd love the size of GX880, but I don't like that there is no full manual controls for video shooting. I have used GM1 previously and now I'm actively shooting with GM5, and I really treasure the ability to do video exposure manually + the tiny form factor, it was like I carry nothing extra inside my bag! I struggle to love the LX100. I tried the mark 1 version, really wanted to like it, but it was just not for me. The concept is brilliant, I admit.
If only the LX had a flippy screen it would be a great vlogging camera. The manual controls are nearly perfect. So much to like about that camera and its lens. But the lack of flippy screen on the LX means that the GX becomes a great little B camera. Sometimes it is a big advantage to have a camera that makes you look like an amateurish tourist. You can take it more places, and people tend to behave more naturally around a phone or "amateur" camera than they do around a more "serious" looking camera. There have been many times when people see my G9 and say "ooohhh, professional" whereas people normally ignore what they see as an amateur camera. Both the GX and LX are great for this, but price and selfie screen makes the GX the better choice for me.
I have both cameras. I’ve always been puzzled by the notion that the LX100m2 has a “real” multi aspect ratio sensor, when in fact, every aspect ratio on the LX is a crop from the full frame. Not to mention the fact that most cameras these days have multiple aspect ratios available. You just have to go into the menu system to change it. It was a great idea to compare these two cameras. I sometimes can’t choose which one to take with me.
Thanks. You are right, that it's always a crop, but what else could it be? The sensor can't change its size in real time. However, the Lumix approach is a bit different from the rest. Please see this video ruclips.net/video/dosD8NCyuMw/видео.html for more info.
@@mattisulanto I think I understand what you’re saying about the different aspect ratios, and I agree that making the lens smaller, yet still fast, was the motivator. And I like it. Thank you for taking the time to comment. 😁👍
It was just a way of Panasonic marketing the overall crop of the 4/3 sensor to keep the lens small to seem like a virtue. The price of the GX850 wins it for me and the dust problems of the Mk I and Panasonic in general with their fixed lens cameras is always a worry. My last attempt to buy a Panasonic little zoom had a great blob on the sensor out of the box. The GX880 is a great little camera at the price and far safer I think in terms of easily keeping that sensor clean as a routine task rather than a complete strip down. I would like an LX100 II which seems a great camera but I would want plenty of cash spare to justify it. I hope they keep these affordable little MFT cameras going now they are apparently dumping compacts. Very sad to see the wretched smartphone extinguishing these compacts completely.
That was a nice comparison but I think the GX80 is a better match for a comparison to the LX100. The GX80 has IS, a view finder yet still small. But I am biased because I have the GX80 😁
@@Eivissaa maybe but not by much. I still think the GX80 is closer to the LX100 than the GX880 because the GX80 has ibis, a viewfinder and manual video controls. The GX80 and LX100 are also much better looking cameras than the GX880! ;-)
@@MichaelGerrard Size-wise, the GX850 is a better match. I have a GX85 and GX9, and even a 12-32, but when I wanted something smaller to carry casually "just in case", I considered the GX850 and LX100 and chose the latter, mainly for the brighter lens.
This GX880 is being sold in Brazil with an excellent price with the name GF10L. One question: the LX100m2 is rather expensive but I read somewhere that just an MFT lens that behaves like the one the LX100 has is more expensive than the whole camera. They mentioned something about aperture blades that makes the LX really good. Lenses can be moved from body to body but the LX is great. I have an old LX7 that I used a lot and it takes great photos. Thanks!
i have a lx100 but i am thinking of getting the gx880 as a family camera for travel. i do not wants miss beautiful moments in life with bulky camera and tripod setup.
I looked at both and chose an LX10. Better sensor, faster lens, more compact, and only lacks a viewfinder. Great camera for a small pocket yet oddly ignored.
The Panasonic LX10 have a much smaller "1 sensor, the crop factor is 2.7 instead of 2 like on a m43 sensor. The m43 sensor of GX880 and LX100 is MUCH better.
My GX880 tends to overheat when I record in 4K, the recording time doesn’t even reach to 5 minutes. Just wondering if this is the case with Lumix LX100, does it overheat when recording in 4K? What’s the time limit for it? Thanks
I don't think you can compare the both. As the LX100 comes with a built-in lens (and excellent one) whereas the GX85 doesn't. Additionally the LX100 comes in at a very different pricepoint and was primarily designed for photography whereas the GX800 has been designed as a small portable camera that supports vlogging and photography.
Since I subscribed I have been making an effort to see your whole catalog of videos.. The GX850 (US) was the first M4/3 camera I ever used and fell in love with the touch screen controls ,,(I had been shooting with Sony NEX and a6XXX before), I actually bought the 15MM Pana-Leica before I even owned a camera to fit. I did find that not having a EVF was a problem. Had I a chance to see an LX100 I might have gone that way, but I live outside of a metro area so there was no full dealer to see all the models offered. The controls on the LX would have convinced me as well. The GX8 and the 15mm is just about as close to having my old Leica 35mm gear in digital form as I can probably get.. Thanks for the great content.
What this math leaves out is a consideration of the lens. You don't even have to think of it as a choice between two cameras. Think of LX100ii as simply buying a lens. What zoom with that range is that fast? And how much does it cost? And is it compact? And does it allow near macro capabilities? For street photography documentary work, the range and the speed and the size are ideal? What have you got to match that? Do that math.
I get this question almost every day😀 I haven't had dust on my camera's sensor, but I can only speak for myself. I have used the camera quite a lot, though.
oh damn I have the first version and that's SOOO bad. It gets filthy inside, and it's extremely hard to disassemble. But apart from that, it's really really great
I’ve had the LX100 II for a year or two and have not had any noticeable dust get inside. Maybe Panasonic improved the sealing? I have read others’ comments, too, that dust seems to be less of a problem with the MII.
Hi Matt, thanks for this video. I just bought the GX880. I know that this is a 2-year old video, and the cameras are not yours. But, do you have an idea how low the shutter speed would be if you use the GX880 with the Leica 15mm f1.7? Considering that both are not stabilized.
Thanks. I suppose you mean the longest safe shutter speed for shake free results. I think you can probably go as low as 1/15 or even 1/8 second, if you concentrate really well. However, the outcome really depends on how steady your hands are and I only you can test that😀
Hi, thanks for the comparison. Currently I using the lx15 which is a great camera but has a really annoying blue lens flare when some sunlight is up. How about the lx100 or gx880? Have you experienced something similar?
I can't say I have noticed anything like that. With the GX880 it depends on the lens of course, but I don't think any of the Lumix lenses have that problem.
@@martinsteinhauer1097 I'd like to clarify that I have not seen any bad flare on my LX100II, but since "bad" flare is also a matter of taste to some extent, I can't promise anything for you. I hope you understand what I mean.
Hi sir, I'm currently owning a Lumix G7. I mainly shoot street and landscape as a hobby, however the G7 is not great at night. Would you recommend upgrade to the G9 or the GX9? I've already owned a few fast prime lenses like the Olympus 17mm f1.8.
@@mattisulanto Usually at night I need a tripod and I have to use a slower shutter speed, but since the G7 doesn't have IBIS it very difficult to shoot great photo handheld. There are many times I don't want to bring a tripod with me because it heavy.
Sulanto, I don't know if you have any influence on Panasonic, but if so: Please tell them to have a look at the viewfinder of the Olympus Pen-F. With such a viewfinder on the LX100 II I would have bought that camera in the blinck of an eye. Now the viewfinder is poking in my eye so I skipped it for an Olympus OM-D E-M10 MKII with 14-42 EZ pancake lens. (In the end quite happy with that choice by the way)
I enjoy your reviews. On many occasions I have wanted to buy you a cup of coffee, but I don't know how to do that. Please explain. Also, is there a way to email or PM you?
The 2019 GX880 is not the 2017 GX800/GX850, not quite. It's Panasonic using a random password generator for naming things again. The GF-series name is still used in Asia. Why? Does their marketing department need slapping with a wet fish? The GF are/were the no-EVF bodies, and no Body-IS. These little cameras appear to be the successors to the GM-series. The GX880 is the GF10/GF90-(Japan) whereas the GX800/GX850 is the GF9-(Japan) The GX880 is the slightly newer facelift model with a little finger grip added. I cannot figure out whether the GX880 has a newer Venus version or not, otherwise the specs are very similar if not identical apart from the new "E-PL8" lump on the front, and some body colours.
@@artdiscovery I have not used for vlogging. I think you should make a list of all the features you need and then look for a camera that has those features. If you are going to walk with your camera you'll want a good stbilizer. External mic connector is also a must.
So is the LX100II lens actually a 12 mm - 37 mm that gives you 24-75 due to 2x crop? Or is it a 24-75 mm that gives you 48 mm - 150 mm due to the 2X crop factor? All that shows on Amazon is that it is 24 mm-75 mm.
As it says on the lens, it's 10.5-34mm and that equals to about 24-75mm FF camera lens. The crop factor is a bit more than 2, because the LX100II uses 17Mp of the 20Mp sensor.
It came with a Lumix or an Olympus camera but I don't remember exactly any more. This is a four year old video already. I'm sorry I can't help you better.
Thank you for your video that make my decision on purchase my next camera very clear (the last one I own is the GX1, 9 years ago). I will go for the GX880 because I am an amature photographer At first I almost purchase the LX100 II or the GX9 just simply because I think the more expensive the better camera. :) So Thank You for you great video.
mmm, the best enthusiast compact is/was/will be rx100... shame, lx100 delivers a decent iq bit it sucks dust like crazy, you'll always end up getting dirt on your sensor after a while...
Both are great camera's but in a year or two's time the lx100ii will have dropped in value as well as the gx880 but with the money saved if you picked up another lens say the 15.17 you'd average out better. Lenses don't lose their value as much as bodies do and if you upgrade bodies eventually you'll still have that one great lens!
Thanks for your comment. You could be right, but I've been surprised many times, when I see people use some camera function, that I though nobody uses😀
I want to know they are using different CMOS senser, why they have same photo quailty.is that means the new 20M senser was not a big step? I want to buy the lx100m2 leica version D-lux 7.
The LX100II uses only 17Mp area of the sensor, because of the multi aspect ratio feature. The new 20Mp sensor is better than the old 16Mp, but it's not like day and night😀
No view finder, no deal, unless it’s a GRiii, 😬 “The gx is a system camera which makes it an interchangeable lens camera”, therefore making it USELESS as a compact camera. If you’re buying a compact camera for its small size, then let it be small. Who would want to start changing lenses on a small walk about camera, that’s what we have our FF cameras for.
Buying a GX880 with equivalent focal range would be just as expensive, maybe even more. More expensive, takes up more space, and weighs way more than the LX100. First you'd need the Pana 12-35 f2.8 ($400). Next you'd need to match the LX100's 12mm f1.7, the closest equivalent is Pana 15mm f1.7 ($500). Oops you're already at $900 buddy, and that's just the 2 lenses not including cost of the body. LX100 also has macro, so you'd need a third macro lens. At the end of the day, you're paying way more than 950, you'd need to have a backpack to carry all those lenses, and would be 3x heavier.
if u have GX with 3 lenses, its not 450$ anymore...and its not 330g. weiht...and u should have 3 pockets for those things...cmon!!! 3 Points down for GX, LX is total winner, and dislike for bad logic. And lx100m2 price is 790$, as much as it was few months ago...

Add a comparable lens to the GX880 (24 to 75 1.7 to 2.8) and LX comes out looking like a champ.
Yes, it really depends on which lens you put on the GX880.
Excellent. Thank you!
Hi Matti, did you experienced dust issues on the LX 100 II? Thanks
No, I never had any dust issues.
Thank you for another excellent video!
Thank you too!
Can you do a video on the Panasonic GX9? Thx
Thanks for your comment. I may do it in the future, but can't promise for sure.
How good/bad is the dealing against dust in the Mark II, as the first version had a serious problem with dust on the sensor?
I get this question almost every day😀 I haven't had dust on my camera's sensor, but I can only speak for myself. I have used the camera quite a lot, though.
oh damn I have the first version and that's SOOO bad. It gets filthy inside, and it's extremely hard to disassemble. But apart from that, it's really really great
@@uzKantHarrison do you disassemble alone ?
However, the outcome really depends on how steady your hands are and I only you can test that😀
@@mattisulanto yes that's what i mean. Thanks for the info
If the GX880 si suited for video blogging, you should have said something about the sound recording quality it delivers.
Did I say it's suitable for vlogging? I don't remember saying that.
Get the Ricoh GR's! They are the ones that are truely pocketable!
Here is my Ricoh GR playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLkkZKkR0lgqkRwelW-mDgztjsEu3Im5TS
Hi, thanks for the comparison. Currently I using the lx15 which is a great camera but has a really annoying blue lens flare when some sunlight is up. How about the lx100 or gx880? Have you experienced something similar?
I can't say I have noticed anything like that. With the GX880 it depends on the lens of course, but I don't think any of the Lumix lenses have that problem.
@@mattisulanto Good, thanks for the info! :)
@@martinsteinhauer1097 I'd like to clarify that I have not seen any bad flare on my LX100II, but since "bad" flare is also a matter of taste to some extent, I can't promise anything for you. I hope you understand what I mean.
Great review
gx880 doesn't have a viewfinder - Game Over!!
Thanks for your comment. It's really hard to say anything without knowing what exactly is not great with the G7 and what's wrong with your photos.
@@mattisulanto Usually at night I need a tripod and I have to use a slower shutter speed, but since the G7 doesn't have IBIS it very difficult to shoot great photo handheld. There are many times I don't want to bring a tripod with me because it heavy.
If that's the reason, then a camera with IBIS could help. The G9 has a very good stabilizer and it's a very nice camera.
(In the end quite happy with that choice by the way)
I'm sure they know the competition, but if I see Panasonic people I'll tell them😀
Bigfarmer8 Love my EM10ii with the EZ pancake. My pocketable camera is the Lumix GF3 with either the Lumix 12-32 pancake zoom or the Lumix 14mm F2.5.
I enjoy your reviews. On many occasions I have wanted to buy you a cup of coffee, but I don't know how to do that. Please explain. Also, is there a way to email or PM you?
There is a link to Buy Me Coffee under my latest videos and my contact info is on the About tab on this RUclips page.
The GX880 is the GF10/GF90-(Japan) whereas the GX800/GX850 is the GF9-(Japan)
The GX880 is the slightly newer facelift model with a little finger grip added.
I cannot figure out whether the GX880 has a newer Venus version or not, otherwise the specs are very similar if not identical apart from the new "E-PL8" lump on the front, and some body colours.
I agree, Panasonic naming logic has no logic😀
With GX you can clean the sensor by yourself 😊
Which one do you think is more fun?
That depends on the day😀
@@mattisulanto Robin said the GM1 was more fun than the S9. Any thoughts? Or, does it depend on the day?
@@imagenatura I have only seen the S9 in photos, so can't comment on that😀
Need advise is gx850 which is gf9 in Asia is would be the best for vlog..
I don't think it's good for vlogging, because it doesn't have audio input. You can't connect a proper microphone.
@@mattisulanto can you suggest good budget friendly vlog camera except action camera..same price range of gx850
@@artdiscovery I'm afraid I don't have any good recommendations based on my own experience in that price range.
@@mattisulanto what about sony A6000
@@artdiscovery I have not used for vlogging. I think you should make a list of all the features you need and then look for a camera that has those features. If you are going to walk with your camera you'll want a good stbilizer. External mic connector is also a must.
what is shutters count

So is the LX100II lens actually a 12 mm - 37 mm that gives you 24-75 due to 2x crop? Or is it a 24-75 mm that gives you 48 mm - 150 mm due to the 2X crop factor? All that shows on Amazon is that it is 24 mm-75 mm.
As it says on the lens, it's 10.5-34mm and that equals to about 24-75mm FF camera lens. The crop factor is a bit more than 2, because the LX100II uses 17Mp of the 20Mp sensor.
@@mattisulanto Ah, missed seeing that on the lens itself. Thanks!
@@dbreardon No harm done😀
Hello. What typ of flash is that shown at minute 5:07? Thank you
It came with a Lumix or an Olympus camera but I don't remember exactly any more. This is a four year old video already. I'm sorry I can't help you better.
@@mattisulanto thx anyways!
What's with the t-shirt?
It's a t-shirt that embraces mirrorless cameras😀 I've had a shirt with the same text for many years.
Thanks!
imagine gm1 with leica 100-400 lens 😂😂😂😂😂 maybe one day that would be our video tho
mmm, the best enthusiast compact is/was/will be rx100... shame, lx100 delivers a decent iq bit it sucks dust like crazy, you'll always end up getting dirt on your sensor after a while...
👍
That Gx880 looks so tiny compared to the LX100 ii
True, it's quite a bit smaller with a small lens.
Thanks for your input. You are absolutely correct, that lenses usually outlive bodies.
Almost nobody changes aspect ratio to warrant a separate dial. Put a ND filter dial instead.
Thanks for your comment. You could be right, but I've been surprised many times, when I see people use some camera function, that I though nobody uses😀
No thanks. I like and use the multi-aspect. I do stills and no video.
👍🙏
I want to know they are using different CMOS senser, why they have same photo quailty.is that means the new 20M senser was not a big step? I want to buy the lx100m2 leica version D-lux 7.
The LX100II uses only 17Mp area of the sensor, because of the multi aspect ratio feature. The new 20Mp sensor is better than the old 16Mp, but it's not like day and night😀
what is the 4k video crop?
Both cameras use the actual pixels, so on the LX the crop is about 1,34 and on the GX it's about 1,2.
@@mattisulanto thank you
1/500 shutter speed for a street photography camera - instant defeat (L).
What about the ZS line up against the LX100mk3? 🤔
Sooo Sad they do not combine all manual controls in video with interchangeable lens! so unloyal marketing decisions.
I’d say that the type of person who buys the camera has no idea what aspect ratio means. Thanks.
Thanks again for your comment.
Minä ostin Lumix GX850 :n
Toivottavasti olet tyytyväinen.
@@mattisulanto Olen olen todella hyvä omasta mielestäni
Long time ago I decide to never buy a compact.. That cannot change the lens.. Just for the simple reason dust on the lens or sensor...
No view finder, no deal, unless it’s a GRiii, 😬
“The gx is a system camera which makes it an interchangeable lens camera”, therefore making it USELESS as a compact camera. If you’re buying a compact camera for its small size, then let it be small. Who would want to start changing lenses on a small walk about camera, that’s what we have our FF cameras for.
Thanks for your opinion.
€950 is just way too much for a fixed lens camera. A very bad buy.
