Me and my older brother got jigmasters on gator glass rods for Christmas one year. Best rod and reel combo I ever owned. Me and him lived on pompano bch. pier.
Put some Abec 7 bearings in that thing. Let the bottom of your leader fall to possibly the forth eye lid. And then try to launch it. You rod isnt tall enough to drop your leader that low when throwing it the way that you did.
The crazy part is these reel provide insane value if you KNOW how to use them , but the reason the are so cheap is because no one knows how to properly cast with them so demand for them is low thus price is low , but these are tank reels that last usually forever and provide insane fishing potential if you know how to operate it like this guy in the video many people thought this is boat only reel but it has very high potential for surf casting as well if you know how to use it as you can see demonstrated in this video 💪
Vintage penn reels work well if maintained, and that rod is 1 peice fiberglass, and damn near impossible to break. I used those rods stripped of components to make a couple of really solid custom boat rods when i was younger and poorer. The price of gear isnt as imporant at some folks make it seem.
Right handed..so I hold the reel in my left hand and cast with my right hand. I also use my thumb to prevent over'run (birds nest) Stated learning on a Penn500 an d still love em. Eventually got me a Daiwa sl50. Can't lie..as good as the Penn 500'w..this Daiwa is better. Can't sea myself ever using a coffee grinder style reel..so I stay with the multi-plier reels.
@@jackmathews351 no it actually really does matter a lot, you need atleast a 9 foot rod to go surfcasting because fish hang out usually very far from shore, with a rod that short you won’t be able to cast it far enough to get bites

This is how my Dad showed us how to surf cast in the 80's. Eating hot dogs on a camp fire on Plum Island .i miss those days and i miss my Dad.
