    It took me a while to get the hang of things when I started casting conventional reels. Best advice I could give anyone is not only to practice, but understand how your particular reel works regarding any magnet settings, and spool tension. Having a dead day of fishing at the beach? Perfect time to practice. Hone your casting technique, and educate your thumb. Start slow. No need to cast halfway to Europe when you're starting out. There's one other thing that many people don't talk about when it comes to learning how to cast conventionals....LISTEN! Listen to how your spool sounds during the cast, and how it winds down as your sinker is about to hit the water. Why is this important? Well, it's pretty easy during the daytime when you can see when your bait is about to hit the water. How about night time? That's where your ears are your best friend. Bit of a different story when your launching your bait into the dark, with no visual cue when to stop the spool. All that said, conventional setups are just fun. Don't let the learning curve intimidate you. It's a very rewarding feeling once you put it all together.

      Considering that nowadays many folks fish with braid , do the risks of birds nesting your conventional reel outweigh the rewards of a longer cast against a spinning reel? Back in the mono days, I would pick conventional for distance but today, unless casting against a champion, I feel like my spinning reel, loaded with braid, with the same sinker weight would not be far behind in casting distance of a conventional reel. What do you think?

      A spinning reel will NEVER perform at the same level of a bait caster. I do a lot of pompano / red fishing & max distance helps a lot while fishing PINS in TX.
      I’ve had days where not a single fish was caught on this side of the 3rd bar & it helps to use the pendulum cast.

    We in South Africa pioneered the short butt rock and surf rods. Also the slide traces making it possibly for the average angler to target larger fish species. With the advent of new powerful expensive grinder reels people are now moving onto those setups. But nothing can beat a multiplying reel. Other sad news for us South African anglers is the closure of the Blue Marlin fishing rod factory.

      South Africa is actually where I learned this style of beach fishing 20 years ago and I'm still glad I brought the rod and reel back home to Europe. Last year I found a short butt Shimano surf travel rod with rings for conventional reel and that's my new companion along with the reel I bought back in SA.

    Nice video and instructions. I shark fishing at pier end of 30 ft water. In order to avoid waves / current wash the bait back to the pier, I need to cast the heavy rigs away from the pier. I use Penn Senator 9/0 with 80 lb mono top, 9-10 oz weight on 7 ft rod. It will go more than 35 yards then slide the big bait on it. When I use 6/0 with 50 lb mono top, 8 oz weight will go 60 yards. But I still practice on land frequently, to avoid bird-nest casting. If I use 30 lb mono top, the 6/0 could go over 70 yards.

    • @johnchen9930
      @johnchen9930 4 года назад

      @Gary Dodgson Good idea to use 12 ft rod, but I can't find any long rod with 80+ lb rating. I guess it's the tow piece vs one piece, and the stiffness needed to handle 100 lb or heavier lines. We usually use 80-130 lb lines to bring in 500 lb sharks. I will try a 12 ft two-piece 40 lb rating rod with 50 lb mono top and 80 lb braid base on a 4/0 reel, like those Hawaiian cliff fishermen, for 200 lb fish.

    Great job Kristi. It is really hard to go from a snap cast like you use on a small trout rod to the off-the-ground cast. You seem to have picked it up well.
    Nathan built all of my custom trout rods and his buddy Nick built one of my heavers. Both worked at TWs when they built my rods; now neither does with Nick just retiring the end of December. Nick may have more citation drum to his record than anyone fishing the OBX. He can launch 8nbait into other worlds! Both are the consummate professional rod builders.
    The OBX fishing community is a small one and Nathan and Nick are best of friends and both can catch fish when no one else can. The best part is both are willing to teach "newbies" some of their tricks. However, ask Nathan where he catches speckled trout and he will tell you "I usually catch them in the ocean or the sound!" Nick will tell you where he catches the big drum; he just won't tell you how he cuts his bait to get the most distance in the cast and even if he did you would not be able to put the rig as far out as he can.

    Great video, do I have a penn senator 4/0. I live in Oklahoma so there’s no beaches for sharks but I plan on using it for balloon fishing for catfish and hybrid stripers because of the line capacity, I can get a balloon about 300-400 yards off the bank where it’s less pressured from bank fishermen like myself. Would I be able to use it to cast a lot farther than spinning reels? There’s a spot I know where it’s blocked by wind but there’s a deep deep hole I can’t reach with spinning reels it’s about 100 something yards out from the bank.
    Is there a way the senator can cast that far, a way to mod it to cast that far or a way to make the senator cast close to that far? I got the reel from my grandpa so I want to take care of it very well, it’s scuffed but but otherwise in great condition.

    • @marquezfamily2378
      @marquezfamily2378 3 года назад

      Yes they can reach 100 yards and more on a cast good casting technique and learning how to use a thumb as a break will make you achieve that. In hawaii we use 4/0 -9/0 casting from shore.

    Having more line hanging from your rod tip lowers spool startup speed which reduces backlashes and leads to increased distance. I use at least 2' when using baitcasters and it should be about 3'- 4' with conventional reels. Tight lines out there!

    Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

      naughtydorf18 Now that is something I’d really like to see! How heavy is a rod and reel like that? In addition to burin partially blind I’ve had 3 rotator cuff surgeries on my shoulders so heaving a heavy rig can really hurt. I’d sure like to learn more about what you are talking about. I just loaded a Daiwa Emblem X long cast carp pit reel with Power Pro braid to see how it will cast at the beach tomorrow. It is a big reel yet pretty light. I’ll have it on an Academy H2O Xpress 12’ surf rod that is much lighter than my Offshore Angler Ocean Master rods I usually use. My biggest rods are 12’ because of my shoulders but I can make a 100 yd. cast with them w/o too much trouble. I’ve always wanted to try an Australian Alvey rod and reel. I’ve heard they really cast far. They are just so expensive.

    • @naughtydorf18
      @naughtydorf18 4 года назад +1

      Don't get an Alvey. Casting distance isn't that much greater than a spinning reel and line twist is a bugger. But their greatest asset is durability, simple construction, and ease of take apart for cleaning. Was caught in a big sand storm on Hunting Island, SC. My friend's Penn Fierce spinning reel and my Alvey 500C5 got sand crusted. His Penn got all crunchy n clanky. I just sprayed off my Alvey at campground spigot and unscrewed the spool nut, wiped down and was back in business. Penn reel was out of the game. My continental rod is long but not as heavy as an Ugly Stick the same length. Key is using a tapered shock leader cause the guides are small and a normal shockleader well.......causes problems.

      naughtydorf18 Thanks so much for the information about the Alvey. I’ve seen some videos of how to use them but I wasn’t at all sure about investing in that type of reel. Is the rod and reel you are talking about available in the USA? I’d love to see it for myself. I have never used shock-leaders so I’d have a learning curve on that. I am very interested in what you are sharing because it is so new to me. I just finished rigging a Penn 704Z and 706Z as well as a Mitchell 396 PUM to use in the morning. I hope the bite is better than it was this afternoon.

    The rods are called beach casters and the reels are called multipliers and that off the ground cast is the worst thing I’ve ever seen the weight and the rod should be at least 45 degrees behind you and line laid tight with tip of the rod almost touching the floor and when the rod is brought through the tip should be @ 11 o’clock to achieve maximum build up of power in the rod and achieving maxiumum distance.

    Definitely not a heaver only a light salt water bait caster ... n if you have a spinning rod with a fat handle an 15 feet an big loops it a cat stick or a skinny handle then you have a Caroline flipping stick a heaver as you call it is a maryland NJ 8 Oz stripper build rod made to handle the biggest shore line fish cast in wild surf an n wind

    These are not only great for casting distance, but if you guys are looking to get on cobia, big red drum, sharks, or even stray paddle boarders, this is gonna be the setup of your choice.
