Video Description:
So I had this idea of a game that changes genres. Essentially this means you could be playing a FPS game that suddenly evolves into a 2D platformer. Honestly not sure why I thought of this but it sounded pretty cool so I decided to make it!
For my first game I chose a FPS as I thought it would be a good start. To make a first person shooter we first need movement. So I copied it from one of my old projects. I then modelled a pistol and set up a raycast system for it to work. (more info in video). Anyways I then went onto level design. I downloaded some realistic textures and started making the levels. I made these interactive tutorial levels to teach the player how to play because its kind of necessary. and then went onto creating some puzzles. In the mean time I made some targets that the player has too shoot, lasers and lava that the player needs to avoid and other things like a cube that can be picked up and moved around.
Now it was time to move onto the next genre 2D platformer. This was honestly super simple. the movement is just applied velocity when A or D is pressed and the jumping is once again applied velocity but this time on the vector2 Up. I then created some linear levels in Photoshop and applied colliders to it in unity. The issue is though that it looks bad so I created this glowing shader and applied it to the images so that it looks nicer. after some extra objects an polish I made an end scene and a main menu. Finally after some sound design we have a game.
Now I know this is only 2 genres. The plan is too have more but seeing as I already spent 2 weeks making this and I'm not even sure if you guys will like it I left it at this. BUT... if you want more I can make more just like the video , leave a comment and subscribe to let me know :))
BTW the game is in development so there will be bugs :/

hello ziger
To be honest, I really think you should include this in your commercial game! The game is already feeling addictive. Also, people know each genre so playing these together, into one game would be interesting!
Hoping to see this new genre in both your upcoming videos and game in the future, Great work!
Ikr I really wanna play it
That's a really interesting idea for a game. Imagine you're playing an fps but then you have to play ddr to revive your friend or something. I can absolutely imagine a game like this getting really famous. Just don't let EA do it, you'd have to pay for every genre
It reminds me of the Hex (from the Pony Island dev)
something that kindof does this is buddy simulator, it starts out as a text adventure, and becomes an increasingly complex RPG over time, but there are many characters with different attacks, some of them do require you to do little minigames to maximize their effectiveness, like DDR, typing, and a few others
Ikr is pretty cool
idea:
1. you could swap the camera to top down when you enter a zone and the gameplay is about sneaking around, but at the end there's an event trigger that switches it into
2. Temple Run type of game, and when you got into the end, you'll be surrounded by enemies and the camera position will be changed like the.
3. Hyperlight drifter, and it's a bullet hell, but then again after you kill all the enemies a door will open up and brings you into an eerie place, here you can swap the game into.
4. Slender man type of game, like the slenderman game, you need to find keys to enter another door, wich leads you to a.
5 Fnaf type of game, where you need to hold until how many nights you want
Just spitballing, idk if you'll like it, I just wanna share.
Awesome video Zyger! 🙌
This is a incredible and creative idea was really surprised by the end results, keep it up!
You should add a 2d pixel dungeon part, like old Zelda games :)
She really just created a new genre of video game, a genre that changes genres
inception
This is awsome, I look forward to seeing you add more to it.
That “basic pistol” is better than all my models combined. Nice job!
Oooh I would especially love to play the rythym genre game
(And even show how it's made 🙏)
I played the game, i liked the movement a lot...hope you keep working on this when you have time :)
also, just an idea...what if the theme is "Weird Escape Room", so that all the different genres can be explained by that?
Pretty sure mixing game genres is illegal...
well seems like i love breaking the law
@@ZygerGFX I wonder how long it’ll take for barji to realize I stole his comment
Yeah watch him not notice 😅
@@PolyMars I hate you.
Great work as always!
This looks so epic, great game, I'll definitely play it on itch. Looking forward to the next devlogs of this game
btw thanks for making a linux build
Damn this is solid, you deserve much more viewes
Awesome concept Zyger! I love the way the tutorial is naturally built into the world! Fingers crossed as you aim for 40K and beyond!

Really like the game idea with different genres and the game does look good. Keep it up! :)
I thought alien took you
xD
Really good and gives off mad karlson vibes :)
Keep up the good work!
4:45 YESS : XP theme LOVE IT XD
Continue making it and complete it💎👑👑
Cool to see you mixing genres. I'm never certain how well that works on commercial games but mario odyssey did it really well.
looks pretty good!
Just keep adding genres!
Just spitballing here, but maybe 2D Platformer could transition to 3D platformer with the square becoming a cube while still on the computer.
Then from there maybe it gets a sword and becomes a hack-and-slash.
Then after battling enemies, you could reach "the internet," have a surfing mini-game, reach another computer where the other person playing the game on their computer then gets off and goes to yet another genre, now back in the real world.
wow this is actually some really cool ideas. i definitely will have to take some of them :))
You should publish this game it looks good
Interesting concept! Honestly I think the way it is integrated (going to a PC to start a Platform game) is not the best way. I think it could be much more fun if the game itself changes genres. Like: you can always switch the view from ego to 3rd person platformer position at specific points where you cant get further with first person
Oml ðis is awesome! I'm exited to play it!
Very cool idea honestly! :D I think one thing you could do for your own learning with it is to make sure to do genres you've never done before so that way you can learn whilst making them (unless that was the plan already then ignore me :P )
yeah i mean i plan to make games that ive never attempted before like for instance tower defence or rhythm games. but no totally want to try new things to learn
@@ZygerGFX Oh fantastic yeah! Sorry if that came across harshly or condescending! x)
Will definitely be fun to see how you attempt adding the different genres and making them work in the game!
@@GamesBySaul hey it never came across that way ! genuinely thanks for the suggestion !
@@ZygerGFX Phew! :D No worries! Really looking forward to seeing more from this!
Looks great so far! Did you look into additive and/or asynchronous scene loading? It may be able to help make that transition between the two genres smoother (albeit not without some additional work b/c of the different control types). Also, maybe have the camera tween to the same position / rotation before the genre swap to really help sell the effect :) Good luck and looking forward to more updates!
i definitely have to fix the current transitioning method as it was made as like a last thing. I have a few other projects which have a really good smooth transition system that I will probably have to implement here. but yeah camera tweening and rotation/movement would look cool.
This is dope!
would be cool if the worlds connected somehow. like the faster you beat a level the more ammo for 3D or lives for 2D you get etc
I wanted to make a game like this. A very great idea! 👍
Please continue this
I would kill for a strategy fps tower defence game
looks unusual but was cooler with enemies:)
Yay u back
I like how the computer starts with windows XP and then you use windows 95 (i think)
Creativity lvl 100
Cool game. Platformer Level 2 is hard.
Part 2 please
So I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now and these games are awesome, good job! You should remove the Microsoft Windows aesthetic tho, Microsoft could sue you...
Edit: The level switching system in Dani's Milkman Karlson is cool, you should check that out
epik
hi gabi,so first the game idea sounds greats and something you should follow through, secondly and importantly i feel like your channel has a lot more potential than what it is but is held back by your sorta fix style of video making, now i know u have limited time but ask any succesfu youtuber and they will tell you quality>quantity, i would sugggest to watch some succesful channel take notes and try intergrating with your own style, take care and enjoy making games
Yo😳
wow can you remake karlson for fun
Hellooo

The fact the response to Among Us's lack of content and ugly visuals is still "Are you expecting AAA-level quality from a small indie game?" when there are free nonprofit Game Jam games that are 100 times more polished and unique than the richest paid indie game of 2021 shows how far we have lowered our standards are for a paid indie game.
