5e never had a surprise round. It worked more like a condition that could be applied to the first round of combat, but in the 2014 rules it was VERY strong and also very often misunderstood. The 2024 version is weaker and far simpler to use.

I prefer that they simplified it. It’ll make combat progress a lot faster!

That last line of Heroic Inspiration is going to be great. Human Musicians can grant Heroic Inspiration to themselves (Human) & others/xPB (Musician) over Rests and anyone stockpiling one when they receive another, can opt to give it to another PC.
Rerolling Wild Magic Surge's d100 with Heroic Inspiration is going to be... wild. And very early. Way earlier than 14th level Controlled Chaos where you roll 2d100's & choose one. And with Heroic Inspiration, it'll be like 3d100.

Yeah, it’s very versatile and very fun! Wild Magic is going to be awesome for sure!

I only knew about the champion fighter having a feature that made use of the bloodied condition but having it be a thing that some monsters interact with makes a lot of sense.
Features that give free castings of spells are going to be great. Things could get a little wild with Magic Items and Spell Scrolls.
I don't what category Attacks of Opportunity fall under (I guess reactions) but what do you think about the removal of the requirement that they have to be against hostile creatures and especially how it works with the War Caster feat?

I think it’s interest. Won’t really know how it functions until someone tries it out in one of my future games.

Can you expend a slot on your turn to cast a spell and then cast Shield as a reaction?

As long as it’s not on the same turn. This also means you can’t Counterspell on the same turn you use a spell slot to cast a spell.

@@ErrorlessQuill9 well a reaction as defined never occurs on your turn, is counterspell a reaction or an action? The rule denotes only a single slot on a turn (not in a round), and the reaction is on a different turn then your own, so I’m thinking it should be fine. The rare case where someone has two reactions, they couldn’t do two spell slots on that same reacting turn… or am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks for the clarification! The rules for reactions might clear it up. But I’ll have to see when the book comes out.

I think the point is you can't use your reaction to counterspell a counterspell, as that would be another spell slot on your turn, but shield is rarely cast on your own turn, surely?

I would say very rarely it is.
