  • The U.S. Navy challenged me to build a mobile shelter as part of their series #SailorVS. I don’t usually do challenges, but this sponsorship was really fun and I learned a lot about want it means to be a Seabee, the Navy’s elite building task force. Be sure to check out the whole series where I go head-to-head against a team of Seabees to see who can execute a better build in a time crunch. Vote for who you think won!

      idea for improvement: Just inside on the floor at both the front and back door, make a 3"-4" high lip out of the waterproof tape that folds when down to seal the floor from water running into the shelter. It would involve some creases to fold it right but when the shelter is up, the 2 sides pulling it apart would keep it a few inches high so water wouldn't just run through on the floor.

    I served six years in the Navy (1978-1984) as Steel Worker. I served at seven different bases on six different continents in two different divisions, and for the most part it was great. The time served helped me to grow as a person and learn a lot about the world that I didn't know and understand. Each day brought different challenges and lessons to be learned. It taught me to work well with others and to see that our differences weren't so different after all.

    • @richardmillhousenixon
      @richardmillhousenixon 3 года назад +2

      @Sans Handlebars but that requires existing structural materials in the location you set it up in (trees, sticks, etc). The point of this was it's all one self-contained unit. It's just a prototype as well, so in the future it could be made with proper materials, maybe using thin aluminum/carbon fiber tent pole style supports instead of the big plastic sheet in the middle, as well as proper waterproofed Kevlar or Nylon fabric hinges

    • @Chaoddity
      @Chaoddity 3 года назад

      Its inferior to a tent in every conceivable way. No anchor, awkward dimensions, would catch the wind (bad when resting, worse when carrying). Tape is not all that durable. Door is drafty.
      The only real improvement it brings is the fact that it IS corrugated so theoretically better insulated if (and ONLY if) the ends are sealed right

    • @richardmillhousenixon
      @richardmillhousenixon 3 года назад +1

      @@Chaoddity Again, it was supposed to be a concept, not a final production model. Create a small single-person tent with assembled dimensions similar to the box and you have a perfect shelter that would probably take up about as much space as a 32oz water bottle, if not less.

    I think you did a great-job Bob. This was not something where you had weeks or month to sit down and mull-over, or test out different-prototypes and configurations until you got the absolute perfect-idea. This was something that came out of the blue (no pun-intended) and you had to come up with something relatively-quickly.
    I think you did a *GREAT* job. There are a LOT of uses that can come out of this design. Stay encouraged, and keep up the *GREAT* work!

    Great project, I like the idea of showing that the navy does more than just sail around on battleships and submarines, love the thought that went into this my only criticism would be breathing holes because with how it's built out of plastic and the idea of trying to make the entrances sealed can maybe make it hard to get a good airflow so it may get hot and stuffy in there as well but that being said it's a great prototype to a fantastic cause

    Great design! This similar prototype could be something given to homeless people for a temporary shelter. Speaking as a former Army Infantry veteran you might want to consideration wind. I've been out in the field and slept in sever weather and if the wind is blowing somewhat hard it can make or break a shelter. Perhaps have some kind of tie-downs with 550 cord and tent stakes. 550 cord and stakes are always abundant for service members.

    This would not work for the navy. They could use the pop out poles that are used in modern tents and simple tarp and create something lighter and smaller. I'm sorry dude, you missed it on this one. Also on length it is not man portable as you're asking a sailor to carry a door sized block on his back.

    Thanks alot bob for the great idea

    I don't mean to disrespect the work you did, because I do think that shelters built with corrugated plastic, zip ties, and duct tape have potential uses where they are a great option, but this goes to illustrate a very important point. Always do your research, because very smart people have probably encountered your exact issue years before you and have developed solutions. In this case, tents and tarp shelters are a clear solution to the problem of a temporary, portable single person shelter. I would highly recommend that you check out Paul Elkins channel though if you want to develop the idea. He's built bicycle campers, homeless push cart shelters, and even boats out of corrugated plastic and he has it down to a science.

    @I Like To Make Stuff no need to re-invent the wheel really. If you go back to the Mythbusters episode on tornadoes where they made a one man shelter that could withstand the wind off a 737 motor and take a pretty hard strike. I would like to see how you would expand on their concept and use something like tyvek to add water resistance.
