4K transmissions were available in Mk1 North American 1983-84 GTI’s! I do not know for sure if they were available in the MK1 GLI, or other model years and Europe. It is a close ratio transmission. It uses the same ring and pinion ratio as a diesel trans. It is indeed an uncommon trans, makes for a fun to drive car, but it screams at highway speeds. An almost identical trans is the AWY that came on late N/A diesel mk2s, only difference is 2nd gear is a little taller
Ah you don't need to do that, I'm thinking it's the sleeve bearing on one of the gears, she still shifts and syncs into 5th but it's just straight rattling and free spinning, even when it isn't in a gear and clutch isn't engaged you can hear it free spin
I rebuild these all the time. When they are frozen up like that, all i do is fill it up with pb blaster from a gallon can and let it soak inside for a week. I made an adapter to bolt up to the drive shaft flange with a long handle and i slowly start turnig it over back and forth till it breaks loose. Then i dump the oil and fill it back up with gear oil after i change the seals. They usaully work for years to come. Those 020 transmissions are built tough. So congratulations for destroying another rare find.

I saved the gear stack just because it is somewhat rare, everything else, including the case was pretty bad.
Nice tear down!
Almost punched me right in the face :)
Where do you get your parts my 87 golf decided 5th gear didn't want to be connected to the shaft anymore
I know you guys probably won't respond but where did you get your parts, my 5th gear magically disconnect from the output shaft and free spins
Doubt you can find a source for gearbox internal parts. If you know what part broke, I may have it. Willing to donate if you pay postage.
