You probably took more care, and attention to this rebuild than most garages whoud have done, top man ,😁👍
Took care good work !
Because us mechanics don't have all day to clean and change everything for heck of it we have a time limit set by the labour times and you customers wanting it back same day so we have to get it in and out. Being mechanic isn't like you see on RUclips the alot of pressure and deadlines
This is amazing. Level 10 car mechanics! Can you do more "driving after job" sections in the video? Like how did the mondeo bushes affect the drive?
I take my hat off to you, fair play for tackling that in your shed, I like doing most my mechanics myself and personally I would never have touched a job like this but after seeing you doing it I would consider giving it a go.👍
Hi James, Glad to see your back on form, great vid, and hats off to you for tackling a gearbox rebuild - well done
Fascinating! You are one very clever man. 👍🏻
Really enjoyed the gearbox rebuild, thanks!
Really pisses me off to see people putting thumbs down on videos that the creator has obviously worked hard at making, these people have nothing else better to do than sit behind there phone or computer getting jealous that they're not capable of doing the job there watching
I find these kind of videos way more rewarding and interesting than videos that are like
“Hey guys, I just bought a new bmw m4 on lease 🥴”
Love the camera work and showing us fully what you are doing. Keep this up man, love it!
Me aswell.👍
Or the ones that are 'how to install go faster stripes'. Love James he gets right down to the nitty-gritty.
@@craigc1615 Ooh, yeah. Those channels. Some channels have like 200 videos about "working" on cars. But only maybe 5 videos actually do anything - usually just changing the suspension to coilovers.
@@VortechBand and you see how many subscribers they have. Like how?? Hahaha. Have a good day!
For the reverse switch, VAG cars don't tend to have a washer for the switch - I've found adding a washer actually pushes the switch too far out so it doesn't get pressed enough by the lever to activate the reverse lights. Good work though James.
This would have been true but with the new switch I bought it has extra length to make up for the washer 😬
@@TheSavageGarage Ahhh, all good then!
"It's not going to rebuild itself" Shame it's not an automatic, right? I hate myself.
So many tools like that, designed exactly for a purpose but break straight away, my hose clamp tool was like that.
Ya can't beat the old school ways of doing things
I look forward to watching your videos James! I've been watching for years but never left comments before. I particularly like your honesty when mistakes are made and your views on avoidance of cheap tools. Keep up the great work and I hope your subscriber numbers keep increasing. I look forward to the next instalment of Savage Garage magic! Keep safe and carry on;-)
Could have done a better job policing the amount of dirt left inside the case... 😉
The drift set can also be used on your new press👍
Also its a good idea to lubricate any seals / O rings......going in dry can be painful 😬
Especially if it's up the rear shuffle tube 😂😂 Any rings should always be lubed!
Yes lube them up. Helps them stay in place too. Ive nipped far too many in the past wasting hours of time.
“Tiny little dab of locktight on these” **empties entire bottle over them**
🤣🤣
😂
"Im just gonna run a bead around here" *continues to empty entire tube of RTV silicone on the one small cap*
Test those gears before fitting great video showing it not impossible for someone with little knowledge and a willingness to learn can do most car mechanics
Nice job James! You have really come along way since the early days. Keep up the great work we all enjoy your content thank you!
why would you hammer on the shafts?
you just put all the strinking forces on the balls inside the bearings... could have use a rod and hammer the outer edge of the bearings plate from the inside, or pulling it with some bolts and soft washers....
I was barely hitting them, if that damaged the bearing then no wonder they’re a common fail. Don’t worry about that
bearing damage is not only about wrecking them, it's also about improper installation that would result in a minuscule deformation of the balls or a minute amount of denting on the races, and by that i mean stuff that needs a micrometer to be detected
it's not going to explode, but it will last like 200k instead of maybe 220k
Watching your videos makes me feel like I can do anything mate, really appreciate the time and effort you put into these
Very interesting, rather you than me, by the way when lifting heavy objects it's always advisable to bend your knees and use those muscles rather than stoop over the weight.👍👍🇬🇧
MAKE SURE THE GEARS WORK BEFORE YOU FIT IT!!!!
That sounds like the voice of someone who's overhauled their box, put it back in and then discovered they've got a box full of neutrals...
@@gosportjamie lol
@@mkm7962 It's not funny when it happens, and I'm sure most people who've tackled a gearbox before have had it happen. It can really spoil your day/week/year...
@@gosportjamie shhhhhh, get out of my shed :P
Yes indeed. Try to select every gear by turning the input shaft by hand whenever you can, also before you take it appart so that you don't start to doubt whether or not it is correct. Also make the outside as clean as possible so that you contaminate the inside while refitting.
Are you a mechanic, what's your main job? you done a great job.
Agreed seal pullers arent the easiest to use, and you have to get a quality one but just be careful with a pry bars and screwdrivers and gouging the seal housing beacuse you’ll end up with irreparable leaks and spend ages trying to understand why new seals are leaking.....ask me how i know....
Why there are sealed bearings in some gearboxes? Seems non logical (there is oil bath, right?).
Love watching your videos mate love the content can't wait for next video best car youtuber going
Hi James great video , if i was you go through the gears while you have it on the bench and before refitting just incase
Proper Luvley Job Jimmy Boy, You've Come A Long Way Since i First Started Watching.
First Class Boy.
Baz.
I was always taught when using liquid gasket use very little, just enough to make a seal, after torquing down the amount of sealant of sealant on the outside equates to the same amount on the inside. Besides your saving money on sealant .
is this guys head geting biger
Cracking job James, loving your work, just one criticism, bin the shorts it’s November 😂😂😂👍👍👍
Well done....one point though...to much sealant used when putting it back together....all the sealant that came out of sides! equal amount will have gone inside 🙈
You beat me to it Dave ... ;-) Great video though James
Hats off to you man, big respect! Thats not a job that an average Joe would just decide to take on. The question is......how do you top this?
Kudos to you for doing such a good job on your FIRST gearbox rebuild. This is actually considered to be specialist work👍
Too much loctite and waaaayyy too much sealer. You want the tiniest bead of sealer. Otherwise you find that this shit goes walkies inside your gearbox or engine.
Nah
@@TheSavageGarage trust me mate i do this for a living. If you don’t believe me, take a look at any video on RUclips that shows engine building at the factory. Their automatic machines dispense the exact amount of sealer for any given joint. Apart from that cracking job.
11:31 you need to use red ELRING anaerobic sealant .. and just a tiny little of it like 3-4 mm diameter max, this is way too much
Silicone police in the house
@@SB-li8zz Actually, if too much gets in there, it can cause issues.
Good work James...you don't rebuild VW LT35 gearboxes by any chance...?
Great video James but treat youreself to a torque angle gauge. Also dont go on and click the torque wrench again 😂. Youre a brave lad tackling that gearbox job
Another great video James, really love your content! well done. :)
And foreigners ask why Fred Dibnah was so popular . . . . .back-street mechanicing.
Good job. Pity about the hair 😆
Good day, this is a 5 speed gearbox right? I have a GQM 6 speed gearbox from a VW Golf V (1K1) 1.9 TDI, is it much diferent from this one to rebuild?
Nice work!
For the torque, you don't necessary need the OEM manual for the gearbox, is ideal... but if missing you can use very well the torque standards... just google it and you find the ISO 898/1. You have to identify few important things: the dimension, (diameter) the model of the thread (metric... imperial... whitworth), the number of threads per inch, and the material (the steel). you know... 6.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 this are, as fare I remember the tensile strength. Other aspects could be dry or greased, but this apply generally on big big diameters... on small screws don't make to much of an difference.
I like how you work and the care you take. Good luck further!
Hi mate, Im so happy to find you. I have a Seat Cordoba, and I think my gearbox blowed. It hapenned when I was going to change from 4th gear, to 5th gear, and the 5th gear wasn`t engaging, and even worst, trying the gears, when I put reverse, it was moving foward. So any advice??? I´m thinking of rebuild it....Sorry for my writing, Im spanish hahahahaha
So, I'm new to this channel, really like it so far (YT probably showed mi this, because I'm having my M32 gearbox rebuilt) but man, PLEASE, use some lube on the new seals. It actually hurt a little watching you just bash them in :D :D All in all, very nice job :-)
Last few minutes..."completely rebuild gearbox" right. Like I completely rebuilt my home by painting the windowsills 😇🤣
The screw at 25:50 min of the video should have 25 Nm and I recommend a bit loctite middle strong, because I found this screws loosen last time I changed the clutch. For more information about your gear box look for “02T Gear Box “ it’s also inside of VW Polo and Seat Ibiza ;) The completely bearing set with sealings is around 90 Euro from LUK.
If you haven't fitted it yet, please put some oil in it and leave it sitting with the tin end cap down for 20 mins or there abouts, basically so the input shaft is facing the roof/sky.
The reason for this is that when you fill those boxes for the first time in the car, the oil can take some time to reach fifth gear.
This is why those are generally the bearings that feck up when as they boxes have leaks and/or become low in oil.
As for the oil, the stuff I use is Comma MVMTF Plus 75W FS Manual Gear Oil. With a trade card you get is from Halfords for around £9 per litre. That said, I know many taxis running around with 10w/40 semi synthetic in the gearbox and you know the abuse they take, just saying should you want to save a few quid. I just find the MTF 75W gives a slightly smoother and quieter gearbox so I use it in my own boxes but 10/40 Is perfectly sufficient for they boxes.
P.S. Great video and very informative, also brave, I wouldn't have been rebuilding without renewing all the bearings but then I don't normally pay for the parts so maybe if I were doing my own box 😉
There's a lot of torque in this video...🤣🤣🤣 Dad joke. Quick tip, and just the tip mind, if you're torqueing a bolt and don't know the torque setting, tighten 'till you hear a crack and then back a quarter turn...
Excellent work!!
Don't forget to put the gearbox oil in haha.(:-)
Hats off to you, mate!
It’s been really interesting to watch this little series and it’s great to see what can be achieved at home! I’m looking forward to seeing the first drive!
👍👍
Hiya mate, would you consider doing a gearbox rebuild for my car, Had a bearing change and all the stuff in December 2019 but seems to have returned and whines in first?
I have a 2008 1.3 Suzuki swift
@The Savage Garage I have found a company near me that have quite competitive pricing on LED bulbs for cars... They pretty much have a bulb for everywhere on a car... Might be a nice little upgrade for the Skoda www.classiccarleds.co.uk
I would of painted the gearbox before reassembly so it looked nice
Can’t really see it though, so a lot of work and prep for not a lot of gain
Yeah I see what you mean, but once painted the mount you have to fight with it getting it in, your going to chip it and annoy yourself
@Henry Discipline wouldn't say utterly pointless, it would let you know that the person has had the gearbox out so gives you a start point for some investigation questions. If you are DIY you do do things more than the average person just selling their car.
I would have cleaned it first, or the paint won't stick, yeah?
@Henry Discipline I'd immediately ask what was wrong with it if I was buying!
Thank you very much for this informative video, I have learnt a lot and I'm now ready to rebuild my MK5 gearbox which is also suffering from worn out input shaft bearing.
You are very clean and tidy , very impressive work, btw will you ever be fixing a ford powershift automatic gearbox I have heard they are quite troublesome and would make interesting content, keep well and stay safe best regards to you mark from Billericay 🇬🇧👍🚗
Now that you've broken your seal removal tool , you can use your brand new welder to fix it. Grind all the paint off it and weld it shut, bypass any mechanism so that it doesn't swivel. And it's something to practice on. It's already fucked, just needs to be unfucked !!
sorry and finally - if the bolts are x nm + a turn these are TORQUE TO YIELD BOLTS and should ideally be replaced :)
You have overdone it with that sealant! It came out on the inside of the gearbox same as on the outside. Most factory manuals will tell you not to put too much sealant because it can come loose inside the gearbox or engine (some oil pans are sealed in the same way) and block oil passages, bad times follow. Usually VAG recomends 2-3mm wide bead.
And it's a good practise to slightly oil everything before you close it up (assembly oil is best) so it doesn't run dry before the oil circulates everywhere and for corrosion protection.
Otherwise good job man!
Would you consider taking my Skoda Fabia 1 VRS se on as a project, I have done most things but looking at needing a subframe and shocks
She is immaculate but garages say subframe no way hundreds of pounds etc intake of breath threw teeth
Nice video, quick question what do you think is the problem is, I have a Golf 4 and when I put coolant in, it goes in and a minute later its empty. I have checked theres no leaks or anything. Also when I drive it, it say 'Stop! Check coolant' but it never overheats. You got any idea what it is. Good work with the content.
It has been good to see the inside of an fwd box, most of the videos you see are rwd ones.
I've never done anything like this before and have only watched this stuff on youtube, so take the following with a pinch of salt obviously. It looked to me like you were using a lot of sealant, remember if it's oozing out where you can see it's almost certainly oozing in also.
I know you like things clean, surprised you havn't got a partswasher yet... well done for doing the gearbox.
I wish to give you 1000 likes for this job :) RUclips doesn't let me ... carry on with your inspiring movies :)
Great job and nicely edited video. Just a tip (from someone who's done it and paid the price) - all that excess silicone you smeared on the outside is also on the inside! Bits can come loose and get into oilways etc - that can be an expensive mistake. Go easy on the stuff.
Thanks for the video and the perfect work.
Should be interesting to know which code this gearbox is. I need to revise a EUH one.
Thanks for making this video really enjoyed watching it.
Only just discovered your channel very recently, really enjoy the content and detail in the videos. I’m sad enough to say that I’ve watched pretty much all of your videos now and it’s motivated me to get my tools back and start working on cars again! Keep up the good content
I got a busted input shaft bearing just like you did, on the exact same gearbox. And to be honest im just gonna get another gearbox from the scrapyard xD
Very nice video though, and you got another sub :)
I may be too late but the gearbox will go back in a lot easier if you don't fit the drive shaft flange till you have it in. The passenger side one is ok like but the drivers side will foul you on the way in. That's why you had such trouble on the way out.👍 Top job by the way, I'm impressed 👍
Beast of a job man 👍 nothing you cant accomplish these days 👌practice deadlifting for next heavy lift. Get those knees bent 😁
Awesome videos. Thanks for sharing. It is very informative. Hopefully I will be able to do this one day 😁
I put my gearbox back together and discovered that both axles turn in same direction. If I spin one axle, shouldn't other spin in the opposite direction?
Good effort mate, I have just stripped down the gearbox on my T5 and this video really helped. Thanks
When you put the shaft bearings back to the case, you shouldn't hit the shafts, because you pushing out the inner racing from bearing causing a damage from splitting. You could use longer bolts to pull it in...
is this trans similar to vw 5 speed?like an 02j ? it looks similar, I suspect they are close enough to get the jist of how they come apart and re-assemble
Just subscribed. :ovely job man..., hat off for the curage to undertake such a scarry task.
Only comment is that with engineered surfaces like the casing halves you need to us a lot less seal (rtv) . This will squeeze out a lot and will end up blocking channels and floating around loose inside the 'box. In this case, less is more, other than that, well done.
Just as an FYI, I like how meticulous you are however, there is absolutely no need to clean off old locktite, even in a racing application.
Hello my vw polo 2019 has got a huge hole in the transmission after just 4 years and 40k km How can this happen on a new car ?
Are the taper bearings a common failure point on avf vw gearboxes pd 100?
nice video, thx for doing iton camera . i have audi A2 with 3td gear crunch and your vid gave me confidence to tackle this task...try at least
Fair play to you really enjoyed that rebuild. Its great you are sharing the learning curb. Very impressive
hi cant seem to find your welding vid, thinking of trying it myself so the video would be very helpful, keep doing your videos really enjoy them very informative
Really impressed with your work like a gearbox guru av been doing cars vans and have only done the same as you twice in 40 years good job mate 👍
Erwin on-line advice . . last time I looked, you can pay for as little as an hour on-line for single figure cost and download shed loads of diagrams and method advice.
Thank you for your vidjayo, very informative!
Waaaaaay too much sealant imo. Other than that, top notch!
another great upload james and a cracking job pal 100% smashed it 👌🏻
About the seal puller. I too bought a cheap one, but I drilled a hole through where it bends and stuck a small bolt and nut through it so now it's fixed. Works a treat
Off the topic of gearbox whats your opinion on the carlyle ratchet your using mate
You used a Haynes Gearbox rebuild/service Manual?
I rebuilt a VW gearbox over 30 years ago and I am puzzled why now they have sealed bearings in a gear box.
Pulled my motor to replace internal bits. 2 yrs later trans died. Pulled trans. Ugh, I hate that car.
Inside of the casting looks as rough as . . . roll-on 3-d printing of metal components per the Porsche pistons
Are the Carlyle ratchets any good? Seen them on ebay and they look ok, unsure whether to go with them or the gearwrench ones.
How many here are pretty proud of James efforts? Top marks and kudos to you mate. As gearboxes go this vw/skoda box looks about as DIY friendly as one could hope for but that takes nowt away from you for tackling it. Theres a lot that can go wrong with a box rebuild but you look to have built it back ok.....did you refit the little bearings and springs that i think pinged out of the 5th gear??? When you turn it by hand i have to say it doesnt sound right to my ear on the video though.....🤔 hope i'm wrong after such huge efforts.
Cant wait for the start up and test drive video....
Stupid question but what have you used for the gasket seal tube? Like the metal twister?
Really enjoyed it. Must of saved a grand.
Wood like to say well done so far, it doesn't matter how long you have been doing cars or how long you have been a mcanic you will all ways learn and keep learning and learn some thing everyday well done again, 👍
im going to rebuild my box and watch this many more times, looks like you line ment pin is broken on the shifter pin tower same as mine any idea how to repair that ?
Great series so far James. Loving it ❤👍👊🤘
What was the brass ring called and do you have the eBay link for it please
