    I had to cut short the sound clips in the video because youtube blocked my first upload. Let me know if these kind of videos are interesting to you so I will include these kind of videos in my future uploads.

    • @Clyde177
      @Clyde177 5 лет назад

      it's interesting to me. Keep it up. What's a good pre-amp, tube or solid state?

    • @Simon-dn9kv
      @Simon-dn9kv 5 лет назад +2

      I'm wondering what the logic behind blocking videos with music is. There are plenty of people who record their vinyl and put it on RUclips without an issue. It's simply not possible to monetize it and you get the obligatory link to the song at RUclips Music. And then your video gets blocked... strange.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      @@Simon-dn9kv It's the specific song that is the problem. Some song, they will block it. Usually, you just can't monetize it which is not a big deal.

      Hell yea these videos are interesting, and informative too. I loved this video Thomas. I could easily have watched this for a lot longer too. Those Sonus Faber have the most amazing grills I've ever seen. There was actually a ton of stuff that looked amazing. What a great store. Definitely worth the money, if you have it that is, to shop there. Over buying stuff yourself, and trying to figure it out on your own. Thank you Thomas. 👍 ✌️

    I’ve yet to go to the current location (last time I was at American Sound was at the old location when Angie was finishing setting up the current shop) but Angie is a great lady and a wealth of knowledge. Whether you’re spending a few hundred or thousands of dollars she treats everybody really well.
    And that is why Angie has been around as long as she has and survived in a business where so many have folded.

    Just sent my Audio Research SP14 preamp in to American Sound of Canada for repairs. Though all the components in a system are important, I have to agree with Angie about the preamp being the most important. All my gear is Rega and I had a Rega preamp. I didn`t like it so I bought my AR SP14 and ended up selling my Rega preamp. Game changer!

    local high/ish end stores are super fun and sometimes you can find bargains .
    i bought my polk SDAs in 1985 at a high end shop in a university town . the owner expected to sell a bundle of those speakers but told me they seemed out of the price range of most students ,so they sat there for ages without a sale .
    he discounted them to 50% off and i didn't even hesitate . So ,you never know until you go .

    I've known Angie for years. She runs a good shop. Very fair; and she knows her stuff. I haven't been to the store for a while, but whenever I see her, she's always willing to bring me up to speed on what's current.
    Whether you purchase something new, or on the consignment inventory, you're bound to be satisfied.
    I strongly recommend American Sound Canada, on Yonge Street North... Richmond Hill... and be nice to Angie.
    🍺😋👍
    Those MBL speakers are pretty cool, but you really need to dial them into a room. You can't just plop them anywhere, but once you position them properly they sound quite nice.

    I can attest to the fact that Angie is right about the importance of the Pre-amp. I am a vintage guy and have the Marantz 300 amp with the 1150 pre-amp and tuner with the oscilloscope (all refurbished by American Sound BTW). This was my dream system as a kid so when I got back into audio this is what I sought. For the longest time though, I felt something was just lacking with the sound and couldn't figure out what it was. Finally, I swapped out the preamp for a Marantz 2252B receiver keeping the 300 in the loop and OMG what a difference. The sound is what I have been dreaming of forever. BTW, American Sound of Canada is awesome and a very comfortable place whether you are ultra high end or not.

    Yeah, we all know if the preamp are bad you will not get good sound but in reality it's super easy and cheap to find preamps that sounds good enough to make other parts of the system much more important and it's the same with amps.
    Speakers and Acoustics are the most important to the over all performance and are hard to get really good.

I used to get so depressed after leaving a showroom like this, coming home to what I had spent so much hard earned money on and not being anywhere near the really great sound systems. After many years and systems, I finely got into the McIntosh world and I have been very happy for a long time now, but his week, I'm upgrading most of my cables to the newest Wire World mid priced stuff and wow, what a difference those wires make, it's like a new system all over again, has me playing music for hours like the old days. That's one great thing about upgrading any part of the system, it's new all over again and it inspires listening more.

    I think pre-amp is a marketers answer to turn things on their heads for the sake of boosting sales. 4" mid-bass to 8" mid-bass, big difference. 10 watt amp to 200 watt amp, big difference. MP3 to CD or LP's big differences. Pre-amps...., the differences are there but not as drastic as the previous examples. Input and output sensitivity matching is essential, after that it's gain reduction.

    Preamp is like the brain. It take the input from a source (transport, streamer, tt). And also usually where you adjust the volume. When you increase the volume, then you start to notice any flaws in the system. And any existing minor flaws at low vol will appear even more noticeable at higher vol. like the quietness of the background.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад +1

      @@vicg5323 I gave up already. You would think that the more I upgrade, the closer I get. It's true BUT my hearing and understanding also improved. Because I improved, I learn to appreciate his system even more. If you take bass for example, nothing i heard can keep up with it's speed except those Magico I heard at the montreal audio show. Then I found out those are also diamond tweeters that cost like $60k. I mean you have a lot of speakers with good bass for way less expensive but for me, either you have lightning speed or you don't. Because of that, I realized I never can enter that ultra high end world. So instead, I am now going the reverse, how to built a few good system with different sound for a modest budget The sopra 2 are very good, but that is to be expected for $15k+ but once again, if I compare the speed of the bass to the Raidho, nope, not there.

    Great tour Thomas and this store looks a lot like our Australian High End outlets.
    This second hand room must be of much interest to you as you buy and sell heaps of equipment, constantly.
    It's a shame RUclips policy doesn't allow playing a whole song.. but, if I recall you have done this from home when comparing speakers and amps, right?
    I mean, you did play almost a whole piece of music. How do they allow it there but not at the store?
    I really hope people do buy from these stores to keep them in business. Many times the practice of some audiophiles is, to go listen to a product and then buy on internet! Sad but true.
    If that practice continuous very soon we won't have any more dealers such as this.
    Keep up the great videos coming!

    • @ThomasAndStereo

      Thanks, some songs are blocked on youtube and unfortunately, we chose one that is. The other reason is because the video cannot be monetize once there is copyright song in it. So all my sound demo videos are not monetized.

    I am gob smacked?!? On the 2nd floor the white angular gear by the door is Britain made Meridian. The amp and cd player are easily recognizable by the horizontal lines, on the fascia, which separates various functions. Often seen in movies like American Psycho. Extremely well made with a beautiful sound and a price to match... off course.

    Fun to hear that in high end they demo with a song from the Adele 25 album.

    "This is what heaven looks like?" Without a doubt. That's a pretty awesome audio store. They have a pretty substantial collection of gear there, very nice. I love it, they have the super-expensive gear in the big house, the 5-digit gear in the smaller house; I'd only be able to do my shopping in the shed out behind the garbage cans. ;-)
    "Oh, look at that high end fax machine!" - Interjecting comedy into your videos....I like it. ;-) I couldn't agree with you more. The sign of a "great" audio store is one that understands "systems", not just individual pieces of gear.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      haha, glad you got my fax machine joke. Yeah I will join you in the garbage can, I can't afford 99% of the stuff in there. Yup, it's important to approach it as a system as opposed to an individual piece of gear.

    Nice one Thomas and I’m glad they let you film. When you go up to the second floor, and round the corner between the both Sutherland phono preamps that are sitting on top of the Audio Research and the Jeff Rowland inside of the stand is my amp. I own that silver Audio Research, it is the Ds 450 and it has been very good to me, class D, so I normally leave it on all of the time. My next amp from Audio Research will be the Ref 75se, which is a tube amp. I want to hear an Avant-garde in person, the silver Audio Research on the floor to the left is the Ref 75 either the regular one or the SE, which will be my next amp in addition to the Ds450. Two separate stores, wow an Audiophiles paradise. The second building is more affordable. The Vac stuff is good and sounds wonderful.
    You are so right about system synergy, it is hugely important and it contributes so much to the final sound that you hear and the reason that so many people are constantly upgrading. The components must get out of the way along with room acoustics and when both of these things happen, the magic occurs. The owner of this store carries a lot of fine equipment for which she can service many different types of people.
    Those silver Audio Research 160m that you showed at the end! I have heard at the dealers and at the show, Axpona, they are 30,000 dollars for a pair. You hit it on the head Thomas there is no best anything, we all have a different path so that we can all end up at he same final journey, Audio Nirvana. I think I know why she said the preamp is important because it is the control center and if you have a solid state amp and change the preamp to tubes, you change the sound greatly, I could go into a longer explanation but I don’t think it’s necessary. I believe in a solid state amps for bass, with the exception of a few tube power amps and pure tubes or tube hybrids for the preamps.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      As always Sid, your comments are well thought out and I enjoy reading them. I did hear the Ref75 at one point there but to be honest, EVERYTHING sounds good in the store. I am always in awe whenever I listen there.
      I guess I spend so much time equipment matching that I learn first hand how important synergy is. Perhaps I can make a video reminding people that, most people who have experience knows but at the same time, my audience is broad so a video on it might be a good idea. Just to introduce the concept of synergy.
      I personally like tube for preamp and solid state for amp, unless I can afford those crazy $100k tube amps....need to win the lottery.

    Your friend Angie knows what she's talking about. I confirm what she said. I switched off my Bryston 4b SST because I can't get it to work like I want to. I can't afford to buy its own preamp right now. To make a long story short the 4b was blown away by my Rotel amp/preamp combination. Is Rotel better than Bryston ? Of course not , but in this case it was outperformed because of the better synergy of the Rotel components. The preamp is everything. Good video.

    And I'm with you on the whole concept behind electronics and speaker synergy, we might as well throw a matching cabling loom in there while we're at it. Like you......, I tend to shop within the real world price ranges ( from me, that's between $1.000 - $5.000 per component max ) and will have to look into Focal's, especially having heard that you like them on more then one occasion, has sparked my interest.

      Truth be........, the more upscaled shops are there to allow us common folks to gain a point of reference, be it electronics | speakers | cabling, and as you and your friends are doing, which I did years ago is, search out lower cost items which in theory at least can give one upwards of 75-91.3 percent of said performance is one knows what to listen for to begin with?, or better yet, how to listen?.
      Then the reality becomes ones concept of what they can actually afford?, as dreaming shouldn't be an option..... 😮😏

      ah, we sat down and chat with her for a long time. My brother even asked me we should have recorded her for a podcast.
      The depreciation, it depends on the brand, on the used market , usually they can go from 40% to 75% but mostly average around 50 to 60% drop.
