Thanks for this video, I'm late finding it. I have a broken upper locking pin lever, that I'm going to try and replace. I wasn't sure what all I had to remove.
I was trying to start my new Mercury 15 hp today. (First time owning a small boat and motor). Perhaps I didn't pull properly or quick enough on the pull rope. It retracted but now appears to be locked or jammed. I can no longer pull on it. Any suggestions. It seems from your video when you took yours apart there might be some type of locking mechanism involved.

Oh boy, Sorry, I have no trick for that, just lots patients. That is why I do it the way I do it in the video. I hope it works out for you. Keep trying you will find a way to put it back.

Make sure you are on neutral position or a locking mechanism will kick in. Let me know good luck 👍
Good job do you know how to tighten up the steering so it’s not too loose to take hands off while it idles?

Or get a replacement spring if not to expensive. They are usually already tight and you cut whatever holds the spring tight only when it’s installed.
