    Fantastic help. I spent a few hours and a lot of headscratching trying to reassemble my Tohatsu rewind spring. I would not have ever guessed at this procedure. Thanks!!

    I demounted such a spring once, never found it back. That was 30 years ago.
    Now, at last, I know what went wrong and how it shoot be done.
    Got a 15 HP Mercury myself so this video will be of great help when ever I have to change the cord.
    Thx
    Greetings from a cold Netherlands.

    Very helpful. For the recoil spring, I attached the two cable ties as you said but then put them over my hand and up my arm in advance to avoid that tricky bit you described.
    Thank you!

    Thanks a lot. The identical mechanism on my 2016 Mercury 20. One suggestion- thread your arm through the cable tie loop before winding, then it just drops into place, or at least it should. I couldn't get this step to work as the cable tie kept slipping off. I cut out a "U" shape from 12mm ply and this kept everything in place.

    Having no mechanical training I thought my aging pull cord on my 15hp Yamaha would need a pro to replace it. This great video gave me courage and give it a try myself. The recoil spring was definitely the hardest part of the job, must have exploded 10 time s before if got my winding technique right. All back together and works like new! Many thanks for the video, awesome!

    Tis quite common in older outboards for the bent over rounded inner end to snap off all together..I got caught out once being sold the wrong size spring from a wrecker...in the end we got the correct one and went on youtube for "best methods" to put these back in...ended up with the cordless drill and cable tie routine.... I think I will adopt your vice grips recommendation next time. Cheers

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад

      The ends can definitely snap off if bend, and they are very easy to bend when winding, that's for sure.

    Thanks Stu. I tried to rewind the recoil spring on my Tohatsu starter both on the boat (terrible idea plus I dropped the 10mm in the water) and on the tailgate of the truck. Still didn't work. Your method worked wonderfully and the starter is back together with a new cord. Boat is 400 km away at the saltwater so I can't reassemble for a bit. Also made me feel like a man to start the disassembled motor by crudely wrapping a rope around the flywheel. It worked.

    Thank you so much for explaining how the spring works. I ended up rewinding my spring in my hand, use the vise grip and then to drop it back in. Unfortunately the outer tab snapped off on the first pull.
    Here is a tip:
    I made a new tab by bending it back in shape, but snapped it the first two times. Remembered it's spring steel added some heat with propane torch while bending and presto. Saved myself from purchasing a new unit, rewound and runs good as new.
    I also cleaned all the parts reapplied some oil and grease in areas that had friction. Again thankful for your videos helped me understand beforehand.

This engine you are showing being similar showed that the one I had, had been slightly damaged on removal and was longer the proper shape. Saved me $$ not buying a new one and just bending this one back to how it was and 5 minutes putting it back together. Working mint now.

    What a great video showing examples of when you should be wearing those safety glasses but don't. Working outside was pain today, the glasses kept fogging up in the Sydney humidity, and my sweating head. No choice though as I was grinding metal and fibreglass.
    A suggestion along the same theme- my 50hp two stroke has a V groove for a rope start - how about a video on starting a normally non pull start engine with the emergency / backup rope start system?
    My mate has given up on his rope start 9.9hp Tohatsu now uses his old battery drill on to the top nut of the fly wheel to start his motor. :-)

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад +1

      I hate safety glasses when they keep fogging up, but as you say, grinding fibreglass doesn't leave you much choice. A video on pull starting using an emergency rope is a good idea.

    Tonight I had to replace the starting solenoid on my 25HP Johnson from 1978. I could not figure out why the ground to the solenoid wasn't grounded, so being the brilliant man that I am, I moved the wire to where I knew I had ground. Then when cleaning up my tools, I was walking back towards my boat and noticed the gear selector in forward. NO!!! Not a difficult fix, but I'll have to move that wire back to the correct place.

    Morning.
    Just picked up a Gamefisher 9.9 outboard for a steal . Seller said he feels the emergency kill switch isn't allowing the motor to start. After putting it on the stand, the prop is free spinning in neutral. Holding the control handle on start, no fuel to it, and give the pull cord a slow pull, not too hard, and it is rough .
    also the gear selector (forward reverse) seems to be somewhat stuff and loose at the same time.... Ideas?

    Hi great video. I have one question, I cut my starter cord to replace my handle on my pull start, if my cord is to short what does that mean? Will there be pressure on the engine when it’s running if the cord doesn’t retract all the way back to its original position? And should I replace the cord? Thanks

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  5 лет назад

      It just means that there will be a little bit of extra tension on the spring which won't harm the motor at all.

    • @en8581
      @en8581 5 лет назад +1

      Dangar Marine I have the opposite issue- when at rest the handle is a few inches out so it does not retract all the way. Does that mean that before I pull the cord the spring is at 0% (not the 80% you recommended. If so is there anything wrong with this? Does it make it harder to pull start? Thanks

    Hey Stu, would you have any idea to why an flywheel bolt would loosen? I started my engine and it made lots of weird noises, then shut off. And I just removed the recoil starter, and the flywheel bolt is aal the way at the top

    Dangar Marine Hey, I think the spring at 27:30, should be on the other side.

      You may well be right. I was really rushing to get out of the work shop towards the end - never good when making a video!

    Hi. the next great movie! thanks to you and these movies I've done a lot of times. Now I have the same problem to make as in this movie but with a yamaha 4 hp 2T engine, do you have any material?

      Unfortunately I don't have a vid on that exact outboard but the process should be pretty similar.

    Hey Stu, like your vid's, just subscribed... Also about "the slightly tricky bit" at 17:32, I thought if you put the tyrips on your wrist/arm (in the lose state, like a bracelet) before you start winding it, you don't need to swap hands.. Might make it a little bit easier m8... :-) Greets from the Netherlands...

    Hello, thanks for all help and learning from your videos. I have a 1985 30hp Evinrude rope start. I wonder if the start would be easier, because it requires a lot of energy from my arm to crank it. Is there any tip to make this starting process easier? Is there any grease point to crankshaft or maybe it can ne already corroded at the point of no return and friction has played against my efforts?
    I mean, I am 6'2" and consider my self a very strong guy, my other friends can't even crank the hole rope and I am the only one to wake it up and running. Once again thanks for all help from you channel, hope to see more of Dangar Marine and wish of better days.

      Usually it is the cylinder compression that makes pull starting hard so unfortunately there isn't much you can do.
