  • This video describes how to diagnose the CEL code P0496 on a 2014 Chevy Sonic with a 1.8 L engine. This demonstration on changing the purge valve should work on all first generation Chevy Sonics with the 1.8 L engine. First generation Chevy Sonics are 2012- 2016.
    Unfortunately, this video is only a description on how to do this fix. I did not think to shoot a video on this fix until after I had reinstalled the part. I do believe, however, that this description is adequate enough to successfully change out this part.

    Thank you SO much for this! My car kept struggling to turn on when I put gas in, & when I googled the issue, it met all of the symptoms for the purge valve. This saved me SO MUCH MONEY & took less than 10 mins! God bless you for your generosity of knowledge & wisdom!

    Thanks for the video, this was what was wrong with our 2013 Sonic. I did check the old one and you were right, it didn't hold vacuum from either direction. Amazon had the same valve as yours now under $17. Light is out and hasn't come back for two weeks now. Thumbs up.

    Your description of removing the electrical connector @ about 3:00 to 4:00 minutes in the video is the best I've seen of all the related Chevy Sonic Purge Valve Replacement videos at RUclips. Thanks, this helped me a lot to replace this assembly 55573017 on my 2013 Sonic LTZ hatchback 1.4 Turbo, 6-speed stick.

    I wish I had seen your video before replacing my valve. I watched other people’s videos and none went into detail on how to remove the clips, so I ended up breaking the little white one while trying to pull it out and sent the blue one flying into the abyss, I also broke the little blue one that releases the electrical connector because I didn’t know what I was supposed to do to remove the electrical connector. Anyways, I did remove and reattach the electrical connector but had to zip tie the hose because of the broken white and missing blue retainer hose clips. I’m in the process of calling the local dealers now to see if I can buy those 2 little clips. Fingers crossed. I hope the zip ties do the trick for now. Haven’t driven the car yet. Hopefully the missing clips don’t allow a leak that will cause the light to come back on. I did zip tie it pretty tight.

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  3 года назад

      There are 3 easy ways to do this... 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable for 15 minutes 2. Use a code reader to delete the code 3. Wait for the car to do it itself

    What if i ran its cycle for the 50 to 100 mile mark and check engine light is still on and i checked if the canister was bad like u said and it was because air went thru when i blowed in it

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  2 года назад

      If you can suck or blow air through it at any point then it is bad and needs to be replaced. If you replace it I would then disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery for a few minutes to reset the check engine light.

      Hi, did you delete your code? Also sometimes it takes a few days for the codes fall off. I suggest you save yourself some sanity just deleting the code. You can use a code reader for a local auto parts store free and you just got to erase it. If it comes back, it's means you have to find a different part usually

    Appreciate the video. P0496 has pulled on my girl’s car, and I was going to attempt to replace this purge valve before paying someone to diagnose a more serious issue. Only concern is lack of working space and the delicacy/size of clips. Don’t want to lose or break one, but am confident I can. Any words of wisdom/advice on removing clips from the unit?

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  5 лет назад +1

      orh5y7 thanks for watching. My best advice for the clips is to just take your time and use a process of elimination if you are having an issue getting them off. By that I mean if it’s having an issue coming off and you know it’s the right way to take it off just start thinking about what could possibly be causing the issue before getting upset with it.
      As an example from this video, when I was trying the disconnect the hose on the left side I couldn’t get it to release. I was getting frustrated with it until I took a step back and realized I might not be putting pressure on the clip in the correct area. That solved the problem👍🏽

      Roscue2 thank you. I replaced the valve and managed to only break the tab off the locking mechanism on the computer control plug. Unfortunately check engine light never turned off...

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  5 лет назад

      orh5y7 hmmm, did you test the valve you replaced?? It’s possible the check engine light is still checking to make sure everything is fine, and will then update and turn it off.

    • @orh5y7
      @orh5y7 5 лет назад

      Roscue2 that’s what I had been hoping, but it’s been a couple days and engine has run for a couple hours with no change. I did blow through both valves to test if there was a difference, but didn’t feel one...

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  5 лет назад

    So I was able to remove nearly everything but the computer module cable. The little blue chip/lock on it, for some reason I removed it but the purge valve still won’t come off. Am I not pulling strong enough or ?? Any suggestions??

    • @Roscue2
      @Roscue2  5 лет назад

      Javier Estrada hmmm, from what I remember when I removed the purge valve pushing down on the black clip once the blue piece of plastic is out worked. It is possible that your problem is where you are applying the pressure on the black clip. From my experience with working on cars, sometimes the issue is that you have to press in a very specific spot for it to work. My best advice is just to systematically apply pressure to the black clip until (hopefully) you find the right area. The worse case scenario is that when the part was originally installed it somehow got improperly stuck.
