What I found interesting with this is, that the dits & dahs were tonally different. (rather than just differing lengths) I found that quite a bit easier to copy. You may be onto something here
@@JohnVK5JAK I’m coming to 2 years back on the air and pretty much all CW and starting from scratch as I only learned 5WPM to get my novice back in 1981. While I’m not on the air regularly, I have been keeping up some copy practice most weeks. Just head copy while I am doing another non language task, such as driving or house work. While I was struggling at 15WPM this time last year, I’m finding that a little slow and prefer 17-18WPM which seems to be the rag chew speed on aussie daytime 40m Rather than space between characters, still need a little bit of extra space between words, but I’m confident enough to throw the portable rig in the car and go mobile CW sending with my left hand on a straight key. Enough head copy to do a simple RST, OP QTH and optional SKCC number. I can do a little bit of rag chew, but sometimes I get lost
@@JohnVK5JAK I’m right handed, but I’m also a bass player so I have good timing with my left hand with related actions. So either tapping, or squeezing the mini field key I use, I can send cleanish code at around 13 WPM....until I hit a pothole, divot or a speed hump, then things get a little messy. I have an old bathtub key from the RAAF, same as what they used in the bombers in WWII. It’s got a really heavy action. That would be why I guess. Prevents Miskeying during air turbulence That key is in pristine condition and lives in the display cabinet along with a bunch of other random things my son and XYL _who’s official title is The Minister for Finance Entertainment and Shoes_ have seemed worthy of display. Using my right hand, I can send clean at around 17WPM with my right hand and can push 20WPM if I know what I’m sending in a simple exchange, opposite hand pulls up at around 15-16 max, before it gets too messy. Left hand sending with a straight key is an interesting exercise and probably something to try when you come across a slower operator. I e only ever used a straight key though I have two single paddle keyers and two bugs. A Hi Mound and a Vibroplex of each. Never used them, but want to give them a go one day Too much extra curricular music activities going on for me at the moment. No time for radio, as I have too much singing practice to do to fix some problem intervals and phrases......one of the other reasons I use CW as my mode of choice. No one can hear me sing.
At one of the NZART conferences many years ago a guy did a drum solo and the whole piece was morse code for those who could read it. For the rest it was a brilliant drum solo and they were blissfully unaware..... Great job mate, reminds me of the old timer Post Office boys on a straight key with that "swing" and rhythm....
@@RadioRunner I have a confession to make. A few years ago I wrote a song with my three piece band Real Red Rhythm. We call it Seek You. I play guitar in the band and do the Ace Frehley trick of getting feedback, easy enough off the Wah, and using the pickup switch on the Les Paul to send CW. There are some really rough demos I have, but nothing in production to share just yet. But I often, when I have a big ending and I can get the guitar to feedback on the bridge pickup, I’ll send a short CW message before the final hit.

Ah mate the Mataura River is on my back doorstep, incredible local trout fishery! You can actually see one of my rods briefly in my previous video ;) Thank you for stopping by brother!
why does this not surprise me at all? I guess many CW ops are also musical to some degree. my piano and guitar lessons didn't get far, but I did play drums for a trad band at one point. 73
Haha thank you mate! It's not a recording room as such, its a cheap divider I pinched off Facebook Marketplace I think - it even has LEDs woven into it but they're broken... it makes me look 3% more fancy pants though!
My dominatrix ticket expired a few months ago mate you might need to find someone else to kick you in the ass and tell you what to do. Thanks for watching brother I appreciate it! ;)
Finally finished my exams with a 95% and 100% score, and that means that I can collaborate with you in some morse code for april 27th, international morse code day?
My son has been experimenting with this idea some also but he does not operate CW. You can find his first attempt at ruclips.net/video/EEa2AnDlJE0/видео.html His version is QRSS it was interesting to see his process for inserting it into the music without knowing CW. I'm also no code so I can't decode his lyrics.
My first cross mode CW to audio frequency shift keyed Morse code contact. And dx, nonetheless, albeit via I-layer (internet) propagation.
Happy to do some cross band VLF on the bass if you’re up for it
