Bioware's canon is that Alistair became king, they intentionally write out the Warden, so it'll work with those whose Warden is alive or dead but made Alistair king. Alistair also teams up with Isabella and Varric, and they meet one of Morrigan's sisters, as well someone else we never met but only heard a lot about.
you just have to bring then together and wait for the party banter until it reaches romantic banter, after that they get marked as a couple and even have some special dialogue on skyhold.
