    You are so right about the inspirational quality of the Fuji X series cameras. I have an X100V and it has literally changed me as a photographer. I totally connect with that camera and just want to keep shooting with it. It challenges me, inspires me, and is just so much fun to use! Because of this, I have recently made the big decision to completely jump camera systems. I will be selling my Canon gear (which I've used for years for "serious" photographic work) and picking up an X-T4 so that I have a camera with interchangeable lenses (the X100V has a fixed 35mm equivalent lens). I'm so glad you keep talking about the importance of connecting with and being inspired by the camera and what it can do you us as photographers- because until I had the direct experience of that with my X100V, I had no idea what you were talking about.

    I totally agree! Honestly for anyone looking to get into photography I always recommend starting on film because of the disciplines you pickup from it. Sometimes I feel that if you see the world through your viewfinder, your images will appear as such. But patiently snapping at the particular elements of your world that you want freezing in time makes them feel more real.

    Another great A+ grade Video ! My 1st " Serious camera" was Canon's main battle tank 35mm SLR the TX. I bought with over 3 years saving my own money, weekly allowance/ lawn mowing and neighborhood vacation pet sitting money and in 1976 purchase the Canon TX which is as simple and as rugged 35mm SLR can get. The TX weight over 1 1/2 pounds or 800 kgs without the lens or flash and it is all mechanical except for the simple match need light meter power by coin style 1.35 volt battery. Actually the "primitive match needle light meter" (by todays standards) is great photography student learning tool . The match needle gave you a great exposure starting point and if willing to experiment you quickly learned the relationship between Film speed , shutter speed and lens aperture. That you could create different results in your photos by manipulating the exposure triangle much like you did with your Fed 4 . I used the my TX for about 10years. I still have it and its in good working order 45 years after its purchase.

    • @zenography7923

      I wasn't aware of the Canon tx - just had a look though and it looks very nicely engineered. I've always found the simple match needle meters to work very well, in day to day situations at least and they're long lived too - all but one of mine still give accurate results!

    Inspirational is the key. I had given up completely on photography during the early digital years, had a Pentax K1000 in the 90s but lost interest completely in the 2000s despite working for a professional photographer. The pro cameras I came in contact there were big fat ugly beasts with dozens of small buttons and dials I didn't understand, not to mention the dreaded PASM dial. I didn't even know how to change aperture, or what the exposure triangle even was despite having used a film camera years before.
    During that time I tried 2 compact (pocketable) cameras just to have something for party/travel, but never left auto mode, never loved them and everything above ISO200 looked absolutely cr*p. Photography didn't interest me as hobby at all. But sometime in 2013 I just needed something for travelling again, so when I went to my local photo store to get some printer ink I quickly looked over the used camera shelf and.... BAM!
    Fuji X100, the original one. Dials like my old Pentax, I understood it immediately! And absolutety stunning look. I was in love immediately, ran home to google the specs just to make sure it's not total garbage, then bought it the very same day for around €500 - lucky me still had some spare coin back then thanks to my dad's early and unexpected demise.
    And just to be clear, while image quality was wonderful, the autofocus was almost unusable, after sundown it was absolutely impossible - but that didn't keep me (after all, my last serious camera was all manual), I loved that camera to bits, carried it around everywhere I went, found workarounds, and it totally restarted my photography hobby. Months later I even found out Fuji does something called "Firmware updates", never heard of that concept back with my old compacts from Panasonic... turned out the Fuji was still at Firmware 1.0, and when I upgraded it it was a totally new camera, very usable even today.
    Today it's still my favourite camera to walk around with, even though I soon got an X-E1, later the X-T1 for changing lenses, but they are just tools for me in comparison. I still thank Fuji on my knees for that x100 though, that really changed my life completely.

    Great video. I love hearing others , inspiration , to improve their photography . Especially , enjoyed your story on the Fed4 . I might have mentioned , in a previous video, I have a FED 5C. I bought it new, at least 20 years ago, and sat on my shelf as a collector piece. After , getting back into film photography, I recently, put a roll of Forma Action 400 through the FED. Developed, and looks great. Sharp Induststar 61A lens. After, scanning the negs, I enlarge an image , with lots of detail, to 11x14in. WOW ! that's going on my wall. The FED5C, has found a place in my backpack, with my digital gear.
    Question, on the Induststar lens, could you share, the procedure, for lubing the focusing part of the lens ? Apparently, the lube has dried up, sitting on my display shelf. The focusing, ring sticks in spots, so I'm sure this is the issue. I did notice 1 odd issue, on that roll of film. All images where well exposed (even tested flash) , but in the middle of the roll , 1 image had a light leek , on the edge of the frame. Odd, all other frames, perfect. Thank you. Ken B.

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  3 года назад +1

      It's a simple enough job, but caution is required. Remove the three screws from the ring on the rear of the lens, and take off the ring. You'll find lots of dried grease under here, so clean it and put a small amount of new grease in the channel where the ring sits. Re-fit the ring. Then, carefully slacken but DON'T remove the three very tiny screws in the focus ring (noting the position of the ring) and slide it forward, to expose the focussing helicoid. Put no more than two drops of motor oil onto the threads, working them to spread it around - this will reconstitute the old grease. Put the ring back into position, and all should be well.

      I use a simple cheap adaptor, L39 to e mount. I assume that's what you're using, but if you have an M39 adaptor (M39 and L39 are often confused) that could be the source of your trouble. L39 is for rangefinder lenses (like the Fed 10), M39 is for some fairly rare SLR lenses. The correct L39 adaptor is slim and should be about 1cm deep, no more.

      @@zenography7923 eh, we all have things we spend money on that aren’t necessities and, for many people, those items are consumable and lose all value within hours of purchase. Eating out at a restaurant or even ordering takeout food ranks near the top of things people do that add little value to their lives and has a high cost-to-benefit ratio.
      No matter what one’s spending habits are, we could do much worse than buying things we enjoy whose value will likely increase over time.
      A frugal economist would insist that an ideal mindset would be to only buy things with the highest number of potential utils (an economic measure of “Utilities of Pleasure”) per dollar spent.
      Considering that these cameras provide, realistically, hundreds of hours of potential pleasure, maintain that potential for decades when properly cared for/maintained, AND have the potential to increase in value, their cost-per-util is minimal and sometimes even free.

    I had a strong memory of a crack right through the centre of the plastic of the Olympus hot shoe as soon as I saw you hold the OM2 (before you mentioned it). The thumb screw allowed you to apply significant torque.. So if you have one don't put more than light force to nip up.

      @@zenography7923 I think the Olympus guys didn't want to have something that marked the camera. They were criticized for not having the hot shoe.. It's a strange omission from an SLR of its day.. They couldn't have just forgotten? I suppose they thought the hot shoe wasn't a 'professional' thing? It looked great with the little thing on, I liked its design FOR LOOKS. Engineering thought there was none. There was a hole through the middle to take the threaded screw and it was levered apart at its weakest point by the shape of the prism (It was pulled apart further as it was tightened) Useless design in retrospect.

      I don’t know how much work is involved, but you’d think by now some clever person with a 3D printer could help us out with all these cracked hot shoes.

    • @zenography7923

      It might have been driven by a desire to keep the camera small, only mounting the hot shoe when flash was needed?

      In the classic car scene unobtainable parts are often 3d printed in metal, so I can't see a hot shoe presenting too much difficulty.

    To my eyes, the Sony A7 images look good but also seem to look a bit plasticky with the vintage lenses. I prefer the older bodies as they seem to be more of a harmonious match for that vintage vibe.

    Technically there's six cameras in front of you 🤣
    I do not own any Feds, but I do own Zorki 4K, which is jammed, sadly. Despite being FF mirrorless cameras, for my taste those Sonys are still too expensive for what they are (at least in my country) so I'm looking elsewhere. In the meantime, Canon DSLR's well do for me, as well as my X-T1 which is live and well. And the fourth of those, my Olympus OM2sp, is also jammed. Is there a pattern or that's only me ??

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  3 года назад +1

      Gosh, you do seem to have had bad luck with your film cameras! It would be worth repairing both of these, in my opinion, but you might want to try something first. If you remove the bottom plate from your OM2, you'll see a large gear under where the film can is loaded. Sometimes, if you're lucky, carefully rotating that gear (with a small screwdriver or something similar) through a full turn will restore it back to its correct position, unjamming the camera.

    My sister gave me her Om1n because she knew how much pleasure I got from just admiring it. Before that act of kindness, I bought a mint Om2n with a T20 flash, admired it immensely, but regrettably returned it to the shop because I felt guilty for spending the money. I’ll be reunited with an Om2n at some point I know! My Olympus E-400 has digital images full wonderful character of soft sharpness and warmth - less of a clinical reproduction of reality. How have you got on with the crop factor of the XT-1, not being full frame initially put me off.

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  3 года назад +2

      It doesn't bother me at all. The camera is what it is, and vintage lenses work the way they work when mounted on it! Of course, you'll lose the outer third or so of a shot compared to full frame, but that isn't in itself a bad thing. I still shoot mostly full frame because I think it's important to show the full character of vintage lenses on the channel, and I enjoy the technical aspects of the camera too!
