I’m not sure if this has any effect on the endings and I doubt it does but I still think it’s a cool feature the developers added. So at the hotel there’s a section where you have to store all your items on a shelf to use the elevator because of the supposed weight limit. But you’re able to take the picture of Mary. I think that’s really important because this segment of the game is supposed to isolate you from everything you’ve become comfortable with up until that point. like your guns and flashlight but it still lets you take the picture it’s like even when you’re completely alone and you’ve lost all sight of your goals (the letter disappearing) she’s still with you. Maybe I’m looking into it too much but I doubt anything in this game couldn’t have a deeper meaning if you wanted it to lol.
its actually because the letter wasnt real in the first place, gradully has the game progreeses, the envelope disseapers and the letters, and evtnually the whole letter disseaprs
3:20 This is because there was some mechanic about comparing total damage the player takes against the total damage Maria takes, but it wasn't programmed properly so the only way to get it is to fully avoid damage
This isn't accurate. It's programmed correctly. Maria needs to take less than 3% of the damage James receives to get the point (hence 2:55). Since this point would technically be impossible to get if James took no damage, it's given to the player by default if they take no damage (kinda like a weird fail-safe.)
After finishing my first playthrough blind this video helped me get the other 2 endings, thanks!! So glad there are so many resources for the PS2 version :)
@@RuminInLove no don’t worry I just discovered this video today. I tried getting the ending yesterday and got in water so I decided to search up how to get Maria ending and came across your video. I’m using it as a guide! :))
I know this is an old video but i gotta thank you, i followed this to the letter and got the leave ending. Going to try for the maria one next, 10 outta 10 guide.
Huh...I just finished it today and got the leave ending and I'm pretty satifistied with it; took me about 8 hours damn puzzles ! But I might go back to the game to do it in hard mode and less time.
but how they managed making it digealitic, l mean organic despite being obvious triggers while still being unique from any other game to this day, is AMAZING.
I haven't found any sources that confirm that, that's just speculation. Jokie did a very thorough job dissecting the code that correlates to the endings, and there isn't anything in their guide that says the hotel library flashback adds/subtracts any points to any of the endings.
It might just be me but I've noticed after playing multiple times both the ps2 and PC versions that the leave ending is always easier to get on a new game (no previous game completed save files) than it is on a new game+
I'm making a bit of an ending dissection video myself, but more about the meanings and not so much how to get them. I reloaded the save in which I got the "Leave" ending right before the PH fight. I examined the knife 50 times and allowed PH to kiss me and then stood in the hallway for about twenty minutes in the red. Got In Water. Right now I am testing to see what would happen if I only examined the knife once and stood in red for 40 minutes, I will tell you how it goes.
Examining the knife more than once doesn't add any more points, and neither does standing in the conversation hallway for any longer than the conversation takes place.
@@RuminInLove I never said the hallway itself alters the ending, but rather the health status. For my next test, I proceeded to stand 40 minutes in the final hallway in Red Status and received "In Water". I did let the final boss put me in red status a few times only using health drinks for good measure, but for all intensive purposes I was able to change my ending by failing to conserve my health during the final moments of the game. Did not read the diary, but did everything else and only examined knife once. I was curious if the knife had a drastic effect, so I reloaded again. Examined knife once, conserved health as per normal that play through and got "Leave". Basically you can turn a "Leave" playthrough into an "In Water" play through by just wandering/idling with low health for an absurd amount of time.
@@ShiningEternity Yeah you can get 2 points added to In Water by health alone. 1 point for having less than 50% health for a decent amount of the time, and 2 points for having less than 50% health a great amount of time. No more than 2 points. It gets calculated like this: //sin is in radians //deltaTime: time in milliseconds of each frame. 0.03333 for 30 FPS, 0.016666 for 60 FPS float hpPercent = health / maxHealth; if(hpPercent < 0.50) { badHealth += (1 - sin(hpPercent * 3.141592741) ) * deltaTime; }
@@RuminInLove I like that very specific aspect as it is very unique to this game (then later Shattered Memories) and can understand why the development doesn't like to say there is one true ending for this game. They also seem to have put equal amount of effort in each ending in order to reflect the player. Where as "In Water" reflect suicidal/recklessness, "Rebirth" reflects the players unwillingness to move on to another game and their completionist nature.
By the way, what about PH damaging Maria in the hallway? At least in Russia many say that it is important for MARIA to be hit only 1 time max.... speculation?
Doesn't matter, everything that needs to be explained is already in the video. Nothing about Pyramid Head hitting Maria was mentioned because it has no effect on the ending. Maria getting hit by monsters doesn't matter. Maria getting hit by James DOES matter.
@@RuminInLove like it says NOT to hit her but that doesn't tell me if enemy damage does nothing, it just says to not hit her. In a game of vagueness and rng, specifics help me lol

Hi I would like to get Maria Ending, but I have a question. Should I run all the way to the elevator or make sure Maria takes no damage from Pyramid Head during the hospital chase? Although I think the latter is impossible to do.
Maria taking damage shouldn't matter as long as you've filled the other requirements for the ending. Every Maria ending point listed in the video adds +1 to the ending. As long as you have more points for Maria than any other ending then you'll be fine. Maria taking too much damage can take away 1 point, whether or not that point is worth it is up to you.
Something happened to me that I can't make sense of. I was playing the enhanced PC version, i followed your steps in the "Leave ending" and i got it without any problems, then the next day i wanted to play it again and get the same ending but with the idea of doing it like a speedrun, i followed the same exact steps again and for some strange reason that i can't explain is that i got Maria's ending instead, like wtf? i was following yours steps the exact same way lol. Do you know maybe what happen?
That's up to you. If you're going for Leave and think James has been on half health for too long (which is a point towards In Water) then maybe you would want to reload.
@@RuminInLoveYeah but what he means is that if i did a mistake, cand i reload a save file and the game forgets about the mistake like i never done it?
Whatever ending points you triggered will only be saved if you manually save the game. If you reload an earlier save, you will not have whatever ending points you triggered after that save.

It's actually super straight forward, I don't really think it needs its own video. Kill 31 enemies with the Heather Beam or Sexy Beam before making it to the apartments. You must enter the apartment building (not just Heather's room, the entire building) with no weapons equipped. Action and riddle difficulty does not matter, you can even play on beginner mode.
