Silent Hill 2 (2001) - Easter Eggs, Secrets and References you might have missed!

- The 15th video in this series is Silent Hill 2, where I've put together as many Easter eggs, references, and anything you might not have known, even decades later.
I've searched the internet and played through the entire game to validate each one the best I could. I can't take credit for a lot of these, I merely pooled together as many Easter Eggs into one video. Some entries may not be classed as anything of the above, but were included as a point of interest.

It’s crazy that even 21 years later we still can’t shut up about this game. We still want to know more
I fucking am obsessed with the game. Its the all time best horror game. If someone for crying out load makes another silent hill, please make it using the fixed camera angles and tank controls. Buffed graphics but also noisy graphics and grunde not polished and 4k. That doesn't make horror. The thing about silent hill is it mimics reality whilst making the player actually doubt what he sees.
100%
absolutely couldn't agree with you more!
It's definitely still an obsession after all this time.
The battle cry that James makes with the chainsaw is a reference to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Leatherface does it!
Aside from the UFO ending there's a few vague references to the events of the first game. There's a few sinkholes scattered about South Vale, not near as many as you saw in Paleville in the first game but it looks as if Alessa Gillespie's influence did extend there. In the employee lounge of the hotel James can examine the schedule and see there's been no activity for a year, as perhaps it's been that long since the first game left Silent Hill a ghost town. When you fight the dual Pyramid vague outlines of the Mark of Samael can be seen on the floor.
Remember that the "Mark of Samael" does not exist, it is a lie told by Dahlia in order to make Harry think that Alessa is a "demon"... The name of the crest is "Seal of Metatron", Alessa was using it in order to seal the town and its god into the dark world.
That's fascinating. Are there any other connections to the first game you can think of?
Not sure if they said it, but you fight two Pyramid Heads because you killed Eddie.
I only just recently realised that the letter Laura loses is also very heavily implied to not have been real in the first place, just like the fake letter James receives that summons him to the town.
I think it's the same letter, that we can read fully in some of the endings.
That letter is very interesnting, because when we read the first part (the only part we can read through normal game) it looks like Mary wants James to meet her at Silent Hill. But the full letter implies that their 'special place' was her hospital room, where Mary always waited for James. We connect 'special place' with 'Silent Hill' because they are mentioned one next to the other, and we are missing the rest of letter, but Mary never really told James to return to Silent Hill.
So, i think there were two real letters, that Mary wrote when she was about to die: one for Laura, and one for James, the only people she cared for. Both were supposed to be delivered when she had died, and, for all we know, that's just what happened, a few days after the death.
Probably the letter to James was the one that made him finally lose his mind and made him go to Silent Hill. He, in his state of denial about the death of her wife, started to think she was somehow still alive and waiting for him in some special place at Silent Hill.
The letter we see in the inventory (that ends disappearing) is not the real letter but what James remembers (or wants to remember) of it, the part that plays into his delusion of his wife being alive.
I found another easter egg. In the Hallway in the Hotel where one of the rooms have the briefcase with the Cinderella music box item. If you walk in the room next to it and exit out the room next to it and walk back to the end of the hall that you will hear a Man voice screaming. Which was a weird odd jump scare easter egg.
Hey, thanks for sharing that, Solidier1👍 That's something I'll look forward to checking out if I ever get the time to replay SH 2.🙂
@@SalopianGamerI did hear that on my playthrought, and much more
The message on the wall telling James to die is shocking to me because that's Silent Hill the town itself telling James to his face to die. its very much so in your face kind of thing.
*This game is so incredible, even today. The psychology behind each reference... It's incredible. Never has a game made me reflect as much as SH2. Each character has an interesting, disturbing and intriguing story behind them. In addition to James, the protagonist, there is Angela, a character who suffered... What she suffered at the hands of her father, the creature represents to Angela two people lying in a bed and covered with sheets. And the things going in and out of the wall of the room where we faced the creature, represents the "coming and going", the "in and out", so you can already imagine all the trauma she went through over the years. Apart from the character Maria, who was born from a wish, but has absolutely no memory of her past, she only knows that she was created by James (because we control her in the game too). And there is Laura, who showed that SH is just an abandoned city, without any monsters, because as she is an innocent child, she has no sin that the city could take advantage of. Therefore, Laura only sees an abandoned city. And each monster has a meaning for each character. Simply incredible. I hope the Remake manages to extract all the essence of this game, that it doesn't disappoint.*
They look like monsters to you?
The fact that Maria was created solely to punish James, but in doing so has to die painfully 3 separate times... is honestly kind of heart breaking.
@@ThatGuyBill1985 To punish him to some extent, but, more importantly, to remind him of what he did.
Thank you so much for the point about the whisper sound effect. This is still perpetuated as "See my dead wife" to this day when it's actually just a big standard creep out.
You forgot to mention that the world ritual played backwards says "are you sure?"
It's awesome! I've just started re-walkthrough the game! Each new time playing it, or watching such good videos as you do makes my heart beating faster and enjoying life spending good minutes and hours in this special cosy place called Silent HIll!.. 🙂👍
It's been years since I played this game and I can't believe how well the graphics have held up after twenty years!! 😀 Not many games back in 2001 can say the same these days. Silent Hill is such a beautiful game. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Eugene Gluschenko 👍
@@SalopianGamer 💙💛
@ 35 while you are in the prison yard, you can hear footsteps like someone or somethings running closer to you, but nothing can be seen…
It's the sound of a horse galloping.
11:53 the prisoner monster sound is also taken from The Nightingale Voice Box. The audio file is called "VB01_67_05_Whisper_Monster". It has been edited a little bit and pitched down to make it creepier. I think people are overanalyzing this a bit too much when they claim to hear this monster saying "ritual" or "are you sure?" if you play it backwards, when in reality, it's just a stock sound and nothing but gibberish. It's a bit like when people used to claim they heard satanic messages when playing rock records backwards. You inevitably start hearing hidden meanings in everything if you're in the right mindset.
Really awesome video! I love Silent Hill 2 and I really hope we get Silent Hill announcements at the Tokyo Game Show this year!
Hey, thanks🙂👍Yeah, it would be great if there's a new Silent Hill game to be revealed. Or even a new MGS game!
@@SalopianGamerwe finally got both :D
😀👍
Absolutely loved this video, would love to see more content on hidden meanings and more! Silent Hill 2 is just so packet with interesting details that we don't get to see in many games nowadays.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm looking into doing some more content for Silent Hill and Resident Evil. One or two videos I would like to do is on the monsters of those games, full analysis and hidden meanings 🙂
@@SalopianGamer That's great to hear! Love the resident evil content too ❤️
Number 21! Wow. I never noticed that! 😱
Yeah, that one was new for me too. That's the fun thing about doing these vids is that I'm discovering new stuff from older games that I thought I knew everything about🙂
@@SalopianGamer i also enjoyed your video on Resident Evil 2! The original destroys the remake.
😄👍
9:47 your serious tone make it even funnier
Awesome vid, I didn't know a lot of this - I don't think you mentioned this before, but apparently that scene where James is looking in the mirror, if you crank up the brightness, he's not looking at himself, but looking directly at the player - totally freaked me out lol
Cheers, Random Assault 👍👍 I heard about it and tried to increase the brightness on my screen but couldn't see James looking at me. But now you mentioned it, I just seen a video elsewhere and saw it, damn that's creepy 😆😆
You blew my mind with a few of these.
Great video dude, you deserve more views
Thanks, GewoonRik, 👍 glad you liked the vid🙂
Your voice and narration is scarier than anything Silent Hill could ever throw at me.
@14:35 James Sunderland is a man of many talents, such as phasing through an entire door.
Very nice, I never saw much about Easter eggs from the second game
Thanks, Christian William 🙂 I didn't know there were that many easter eggs until I started to really look for them to make this video. I'm wondering what I'll find when I do Silent Hill 3 😄
@@SalopianGamer I will sure check it out! and sorry for my typo there.
FYI, if you want to trigger #38 you have to take the hotel's map before going to the 3rd floor, or else you won't hear Mary/Maria calling you.
Also, thank you for this video, i learned a few things, greetings from France.
Thank you for sharing that bit of information with us, Lrc Lamzor 👍 and you're welcome 🙂
I speedrun this game and I heard it without taking map
@@ufokais Funny enough i just played recently the PC version of the game and i heard it too without the map ! Pretty sure it's not the case in the original PS2 version.
By the way, if you're speedrunning the game i suggest you to change your route because going to the 3rd floor without the key is just a 20 seconds waste of time 😅
@@HappyHardcore38 loool I know! I forgot on my first run ever all about the key so it happened
13:58 OMG !! what a psychological torture
9:54 watching the enemy just fly from the left side of the screen looks so funny
This was great! More, please!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😄👍
Subscribed! nice content :)
Hey, thanks for the sub, mnGaKiido 🙂👍
@@SalopianGamer Keep up with this quality of vidoes man! you will get big, Im sure of it.
Nice Video ! Just commenting for algorithm :)
Thanks, iSerdal 👍 I appreciate the support 🙂
Excellent video as always thanks dude 😎👍🏻
Great video bro
Thanks, V, glad you enjoyed the video 👍😄
There used to be a series of RUclips videos analysing Silent Hill 2 and all the hidden references and easter eggs
The channel was called queenofheadless
ive been looking up easter eggs for sh for years and ive never known some of these
That's make me want to play it again :O
Go for it, Rebecca 🙂👍 I'm also thinking of playing through it again at some point.
I’m on a silent hill 2 binge, going to play it all the way through this evening
11:45 Hmm there is also a photo of this kind( group with a ghost) on the game Metal gear solid VR missions (Special > Mystery > level 10), which was also developed by Konami. That can't be a coincidence.
silent hills 1-3 are a master piece. its a shame the remakes looking more like the re2 remake. i wish they would do it like they did the re1 remake. keep the bas pretty much the same with heaps more polygons and pixels and add a few extra areas and shuffle a few things up.
I agree, though I am surprised they didn't want to remake the first game. The original three, like you said, are a master piece, and really Silent Hill 1 is the only game that needs a graphical update. I'm in the middle of doing my Silent Hill 3 Easter Eggs video right now, and I think this and the second game have aged well, but as you mentioned, if they add extra areas, that would be interesting 🙂
@@SalopianGamer 100% not only does the 1st one need the graphical overhaul it would be nice to be able to play it on more then a psx. And it's the best imo
@@SalopianGamer Silent Hill 1 is perfect for me, the graphics don't bother me at all and I still think it is the best game in the while franchise. It is the only game where each location has specific creatures, it has the most aggressive otherworld, it is the only game where your radio stops working for a while, it has TONS of references and little details (Like the warning messages to Harry in school) and the subplot with the drugs makes the town history even darker. I love 2 but I really think it is a bit overrated, it is the deeper game in the bunch but I didn't feel it as scary as the first one...
Can you do Silent Hill 3 Easter Eggs, Secrets and References please ?
I definitely will be doing SH 3. I want to do all the SH games, and I've never even played Downpour and Homecoming, so those would be interesting.
Homecoming and Downpour suck.
one thing you missed in the observation deck bathroom at the beginning is the graffiti on the wall on both sides are bible verses taken from the book of job, there is also a crude drawing surrounded by Hebrew lettering on the wall of one of the toilet stalls that I believe was said to be Lilith, the gaming muse has a video on biblical references that explains both
12:08 What Really it's Disturbing Shooting A Ghost in There
Proud to say I knew about all of those
'easter eggs, secrets and references'
'The name of his car is a...'
please make Silent Hill 3 and Homecoming videos ? :D
btw, the Dog in the Dog Ending, it is speculated to be the Dog which Eddie shot.
I also believe that the Dog is a reference to the real-life story Hachiko.
I definitely will be doing all of the Silent Hill games, LightningLover 👍🙂
The dog is named Mira.
Isn't the gallow area have sound of horse galloping around? A bit creepy!
8:07 doesn't the other half also show her brother?
Awesome video! I'm pretty excited about the remake - I hope they don't change the camera angle to over the shoulder. Really don't want it to be another resident evil style remake.
I'm glad you liked the video, Uta Leonard🙂 Yeah, I agree the camera angle shouldn't change. I'm also hoping that the SH 2 remake does well, so they could do a remake of the first game.
@@SalopianGamer Yeah that would be awesome. Your channel is really good btw.
Thank you🙂👍
it will be over the shoulder obviously this game's camera is terrible i can't understand Silent Hills fans BRUH
Lindsey street is spelled with a "e" so it's not the same author, I think it's David L. Lindsey, plus all others are american for the most part

Just watched The Game Statistic do a blindfolded playthrough! What's a good Xbox emulator for this game?
08:30 Mmmm ASMR! 👂👄
About the tablets. The seductress one points to Angela possibly using herself to seduce men and kill them. While it is known that she killed her father and brother for what they did to her, it can also be presumed that she was used sexually by other men in which forced her to kill them. Thus seducing men only to kill them.
I think you're right about that, orangreeffect, it further supports that theory with the way she acts strange around James because of him being a male. I'll be doing a video at a later point that will look further into the Angela story arc, along with all the other characters 🙂
@@SalopianGamer That's cool. I just always thought this because we know Angela was raped by her father and brother, so why would SH accuse her of being a seductress? The only logical conclusion I can come up with is that she had trust issues with men and would inadvertently seduce them and kill them.
@saul korzenecki abuse victim here. Why Silent Hill calls for particular reasons, yes? Why would it call her a seductress if she was raped? A seductress is someone who seduces, not gets seduced.
@@The-R-System No, you don't get it. It's not the town calling her a seductress, it's her own guilty conscience. Sexual abuse makes some people's perceptions so warped that they see themselves as the instigators, wrongfully so.
James's tablet is also quite telling seeing as though he sees himself as a dark force, a selfish, evil and violent person - an oppressor. So the tablet manifested his own self image onto it.
Eddie's is probably his subconscious image of himself too, that he tries to deny and kill away. He knows he's a "gluttonous pig" deep down, but denies it violently.
@@penta_novae I just read what I said and it doesn't say the town called her a seductress
