    In SH3 Heather asked Douglas while driving to silent hill if he has been to silent hill. Douglas said "Once, on a missing person case. Never did find him" . That could be a reference from SH2. Looking for James. But we don't know for sure since Douglas didn't mention that missing persons name

      @@KesslerWB In SH1 and SH3 Silent Hill is a cesspool for the demon cult.

      @@luigifan001 In SH1 and SH3, the monsters in the town exist as a manifestation of Alessa's nightmare. In the first game it's because she's in her coma thing. In the third game it's because of god causing monsters to appear and feed off of Heather's fears. In the second game it seems like the town is feeding off of multiple people to manifest monsters as opposed to a singular person. And SH2 directly references events which come back in SH4, and SH4 is canon to SH1 and SH3 given the prominence of the cult. SH4 also includes James Sunderland's father Frank Sunderland, implying that SH2 is in fact in that same universe.

    Leave for SH2 will always be canon for me because it's the most narratively and thematically relevant to James' arc, as well as the most emotionally fleshed out. Leave also doesn't necessitate him actually returning home, simply leaving the town, or leaving the psychological torment, or both, depending on how you see it.

    Ok so for silent hill 2 I believe leave is canon. Or at least was intended to be. (Canon for me regardless). As you said he makes that declaration to himself before he fights the 2 pyramid heads. He also tells Angela that he wouldn't kill himself. Also if you watch all 4 endings, "leave" has the highest quality scenes, conversations and voice acting. The dialog is longer and deeper and it doesn't feel rushed. textures and camera angles are better. It also ties up the question of what happened to Laura.

    Great video. I would love to see more Silent Hill-content from you. I usually think of the good+ endings as canon, as they usually are the most satisfying. But with SH2 I think you can make an argument for both "Leave" and "In water", as both are satisfying in a narrative sense, but one is uplifting and the other is depressing. It all comes down to wether James both realises his crime, and overcomes his guilt. In "Maria" he overcomes his guilt without truly realising his crime, with the implication that he will repeat the same mistakes. With the 2 others he realises his crime, but with "Leave" he overcomes his guilt, with his rejection of Pyramid Head getting the context that James is done punishing himself, and thus also done being punished by Pyramid Head. With "In water" the scene is the same, but the context is different. PH is no longer needed here as well, but it's because James will no longer run from his guilt and bring the ultimate punishment on himself. I think both work, but I prefer "Leave".
    Also, I don't view any of the post-4 games as canon, though I do have a soft spot for parts of SM and Downpour. The gameplay of Origins is good, but the story is bad fanfiction, and the only thing I like about Homecoming is the music and boss-designs. Everything else is pretty terrible.

It had nothing to do with human psychology, a haunted town, an unborn god or any of that crap but all merely the grand plan of dog that seeks to endlessly troll humanity for his amusement. Or the intervention of hostile invaders from outer space. Because reasons.

    I don't feel like "In Water" is James killing himself out of guilt so much as him seeing it as his only way to "see Mary again", which was his objective from the beginning. I also can't imagine Laura being willing to live with James as the last time we see her before the ending is her finding out that he murdered her best friend (Mary) and her screaming "I hate you! I hate you!" and calling him a killer. Then all of a sudden her reunites with her again and they become a father-daughter duo? No way.
    Also "proof" that hints at the In Water ending is the dialogue Henry says around the Superintendant's son being missing is given to you when examining a picture of Toluca Lake, which is where James drowns himself in In Water. Also, there is that "missing person" line Douglas says to Heather in SH3. While it's not confirmed he's talking about James, I personally can't imagine the line meaning anything but a link to the previous protagonist.

      @Daniel328DT Год назад +2

      @@Obscure_man31 The In Water ending makes sense for the prologue as we evidently see James driving to Silent Hill with Mary inside the car after her death. That isn't until the town decided to punish James and make him come to his own guilt. If the leave ending happens, then that means James forgets his griefing and accepts his guilt. However, Laura is just a child. She probably doesn't really understand why James really did it as James keeps quiet leaving the topic more mysterious. Now could she end up forgiving James, maybe. It really just depends on how the narrative approach that comes with the leave ending. Idk how James can simply not suffer through some wild PTSD raising a child. So I can understand that, but yeah.

    • @xTerrySunderlandx
      @xTerrySunderlandx Год назад +1

      During the game james has 3 initial "choices"
      acceptance and repent (ask for forgiveness and move on, wich is leave with laura wich is what mary wants)
      acceptance with guilt and remorse (accept his crime but can't overcome the guilt, which is the suicide in water in order to be with her by dying in the same way)
      Total denial (acknowledges his crime but justifies it, and negates it. Which is been punished over again with Maria)
      Laura is not laura but an entity as maria is, so that means they change according to what the person affected is accepting
      Laura is the way mary forgives james for her crime.
      As well as maria is the eternal punishment.
      maria trough the whole game is trying to make james suffer because she hates him, but when james chooses her she "changes" and "accept" him in order to make him suffer again with the same sickness mary had
      in the case of Laura, it's the very same but the other way around, laura is a test of commitment once james is "released" from guilt laura accepts him as she is the desire of mary for them to have a life.
      the other endings are extras as those requieres a 2nd playthrough.

      @@rinraiden i really think she is not, if she where that would lead to a loooooooooot of inconsistency and plot holes.
      she was at the same hospital that mary was, and had no parents, this means that either she was in foster care or an orphanage.
      this leads to 2 things, the game takes place right after james kills mary (mary's body is in the backseats of the car), this thing alone makes Laura imposible to receive a letter and be there b4 james, also she does not known the town as she was never in there, all she knows is what mary told her about the hotel etc..
      she seems to known and navigate through town fairly easy like someone who has been living there for so long that she knows even the smallests places.
      She appears in key points to makes james take some action or push him into some action
      So basically she pretty much teleports all over the town in places that makes no sense for her to be unless james is there.
      the reason you can see her with eddie is because of james, SH has different realities according to the person and cannot interact with each other, except for james for some reason, he can see angela's and eddie's reality (in fact the scene on the hotel with angela has something not many noticed, the room where angela is is iluminate even when there is no light points (those are the flames, but james at that point cannot see those in plain)
      And the ending itself, she is a child, she won't forgive james so easily and would not have a so sudden change with someone she hates not to mention that she never found mary and never had a real reason to trust james etc...
      Like i said, Laura is ONLY at key points just for james if she was real that would be a major plot hole in the story

    Silent Hill 2: In Water
    Silent Hill 3: Good
    Silent Hill 4 The Room: Escape
    Silent Hill Origins: Good (No shit)
    Silent Hill Homecoming: Hospital
    Silent Hill Shattered Memories: Broken & Love Lost (Firstly, the final therapy room encounter is not a garuntee you'll get the same videotape ending, this is just to make that clear. Secondly, they seem the most in line with the story Shattered Memories is trying to tell and, honestly, are the most touching to me.)

Given that by Silent Hill 3 there're still people trying to revive "God" into life one has to assume either James failed at his own ritual or that the ending is simply non canon.

      @@pious83 Well regardless of what this ending may actually imply regarding James's fate after SH2 given that it's not accesible on a normal playthrough that automatically makes it just as non canon as the UFO and Dog endings. Since the way in which the ending can be obtained involves collecting a bunch of religious items and artifacts necessary in order to carry out the Rebirth ritual it's clear that the developers were hinting at a connection with both Dhalia's cult and the religious customs that pervade the town of Silent Hill as stated in the first game.

    • @pious83
      @pious83 3 года назад

      @@javiervasquez8995 Just for context, the canon ending to Resident Evil 1, is unachievable in-game. So I'd take the accessibility of an ending as a determining factor with a pinch of salt.
      Hints or allusions to the cult are also somewhat irrelevant. This game doesn't involve them at all. It is pretty obvious there is something fantastical about this town, just by James exploring it within the first hour. The texts and artifacts he collects also note the rituals and mythology of the town too. It is why this game is itself a standalone entry in the series. As it has no ties to the larger mythos.

Silent hill is a place where people go for their sins, pyramid head helps james when he kills Maria. James in that case want the sexually version of his wife, he was going to distract from the objective, wich is the redemption. The cherry on the cake is Laura: in water she just desappear and that makes no sense.

Couldn't it be the case that James met the real Laura in the hospital before killing his wife, she gives James Mary's letter before he kills her, but this is repressed by his conscious until the ending? The Laura we see is just James' projection of her. If the Laura we see is real and innocent, explain to me her evil deeds - bullying Eddie, kicking the key away, locking up James, all this before discovering that James killed Mary. To me, these evil behaviors reflect her twisted projection of James, who sees her simultaneously as innocent and as malignant, because she is (through her relationship with Mary) a reminder of his sins. Laura is real and James did meet her outside of Silent Hill, but the Laura we see in the town is not real. Again, if the Laura we see is real, then how is she in Silent Hill? @@curtisjackson5793 *I mean, is the town a physical place everyone (innocents) can step upon without being disturbed, and even interact with the “damned”?*
      Yes it is. You can even find a note in Silent Hill 2 that mentions a guy seeing a monster, but his friend doesn't see it. Hell, it's even a big part of the story:
      *James is the only one to encounter Pyramid Head and when he asks Eddie about it, Eddie doesn't know what James is talking about.
      *Mary's letter to James is only the town's way of calling him, there are no actual words on the letter as shown towards the end of the game.
      *James is surprised that Laura hasn't gotten a scratch to which Laura answers "why should I?" Unlike James, Eddie and Angela, she obviously isn't a killer and she doesn't require punishment like the rest of them and therefore she doesn't see any monsters. Calling Eddie fat and James a "fartface" doesn't really make her a prime candidate for the towns punishment.
      And if now Laura is a projection from the mind of James, how come she and Eddie can see and talk to one another?

    • @Carolean_Vergil
      @Carolean_Vergil 2 года назад +3

      @@curtisjackson5793 Regarding the townsfolk:
      a) They simply left the town, which is supported in Silent Hill 2 since the town is run down like nobody has been there for years. It's plausible that the spiritual power affected a lot of the population so many probably decided to move out. Silent Hill also seems to have a bad reputation after the first game and that reputation was almost certainly built up by the stories from those who moved out.
      b) They've possibly been engulfed by the spiritual power of the town (which is perhaps more relevant for SH1).
      c) The only possible town residents left during SH2 are cult members, which is an organisation in dissarray after SH1, so they're most likely laying low at that time.
      And no Laura isn't a projection, she is real. The letter she got from Mary is real, the one James got wasn't. That alone should tell you that Laura is in fact real.
