I will never stop wishing Chappell Roan the best. She went from questioning the longevity of her music career for most of a decade to massive festivals and the VMAs so incredibly quickly. It feels like she had no time for it to ramp up or to acclimate to her new degree of fame. She's already been open about how peoples' entitlement has led to her feeling unsafe, and how she's trying to navigate her mental health in this incredibly challenging industry.
It makes me so deeply angry that people finally recognize how harmful the media, paparazzi, and audience entitlement was to early 2000s/2010s performers... but will then speak about Chappell like she owes people perfect responses and unlimited access to her just because "that's the job". People shouldn't have to wait a decade or two to discuss the tragic treatment of female performers and how it's impacted them. They need to start correcting how they view and speak about them in the present.

D’Angelo, as an African who immigrated to America at 21 and now 27, I can tell you that Americans seem to have an incessant fascination with belittling Africans. Being African, intelligent, educated, and stylish doesn’t exempt you from their treatment as anomalies. It’s almost as if there’s an expectation that you’ll conform to a certain stereotype, perhaps being humble and grateful for the privilege of being in America. When you deviate from this expectation, you’re labeled as uppity, entitled, and all sorts of negative traits. The moment they hear your accent, they expect you to meet their preconceived notions, and any deviation from that is unfathomable. It’s particularly challenging when you’re queer, as it raises questions about how you can be African, queer, comfortable, and proud.

In my very limited experience, actually uppity Africans don’t have an obvious accent, as they’ve spent most of their life IN the US. I will say, even the brattiest of African clients I’ve worked with do an excellent job of pointing out exactly how little Americans know about Africa.

I hope the trash tabloid rags don't dull her spark. Im so so glad there is someone in the media like her standing for herself and showing younger girls its OK to take up space and say no.

The contrast between men and women outfits are wild, really reflects the social conditioning we all go through in society, are we really presenting ourselves in our own image, or in the image that compliant with societal norms, if all these wealthy men and women cant express themselves truly, how do ordinary expect to achieve this

Also another note, that the only man to actually have an interesting outfit that's a clear expression of themselves, its the one of the few gay men present. which to me, means that coming out of the closet is not just about sexuality. but it's about shedding the shell forced upon by society and letting the butterfly out

I’m so relieved we’re finally talking about it because something must be done! The only place they should be expected to hold it, is when they’re getting their photos and not a minute sooner!

Chappell's responses in general make me think of a toxic office environments. You have managers (paparazzo) micro managing, asking for overtime, expecting you to be checking work out of work hours and honestly have no job without you there for them to talk down to and direct into positions they want you, in most instances. Then someone comes in with self respect and boundaries deemed rude because the others before them bent over backwards out of fear they wouldn't get the favorable treatment and praise of those who don't even offer anything without them there doing their job.

What’s happening to Chappell is literally reaction abuse. Its when people put all the blame and criticism on the person reacting rather than on what made them react like that in the first place. People were harassing her family and someone tried to kiss her and yet her calling them out is wrong, someone yells at her and yet her yelling back is whats wrong. I honestly feel so bad for her.
