sad update, post-recording: the olympics committee awarded ana bărbosu her bronze medal yesterday, officially knocking jordan out of the place she earned. this is what ana said:
"I can't help but think about Sabrina and Jordan right now. It's a difficult situation for us, with so many uncertainties and overwhelming emotions. I hope everyone understands that we have not done anything wrong at the Olympics. And that the Olympic spirit is more important than any misunderstanding between the authorities. I want to believe that the day will come when all three of us will receive a bronze medal.”
i respect her statement so much, and she's absolutely right. it's an absolute shame that the athletes involved have been a thousand times more professional than the international olympic committee. they deserve better!

That Dutch guy actually boils my blood. Like he calls it the biggest mistake of his life, but it’s not a mistake. A mistake is not grooming a child, planning to do international travel to meet them, giving said child alcohol, taking advantage of her, taking her to a second location and taking advantage of her again. When there are that many opportunities to reconsider it is not a mistake, it’s a character flaw. I am beyond disappointed that he was put in front of the world as a hero at an event where people the same age as the child he hurt compete.

This is not an "everybody is a winner" competition. There is ONE medal to be handed out (or there is a tie, which in gymnastics does not really happen). The decision could be so easily misused for other, upcoming, editions of the Olympic Games.
The rules of each competitions are made by Federations (FIG, FIVB, FIVA etc) and the IOC is an over-governing body that sets the framework & ensures organisation.
But I do agree: the decision regarding the number of medals is jurisprudence of the IOC.

The craziest part about the gymnastics bronze medal is that the olympics has literally had people share a medal in the past. It wouldn't even be a new thing they haven't done. The fact that they are not having the olympians share the bronze at the very least is insane.

    • @piratesswoop725
      @piratesswoop725 3 месяца назад +236

Actually during this Olympics two men shared a bronze in high bar, Zhang Boheng and Tang Chia-hung. BUT this is only because they had identical SV and identical execution. Typically in a tie, the person with the higher E score wins but since theirs were identical, they were able to share. Probably the reason FIG denied sharing the medals, even though they screwed up, is because the scores weren’t actually tied.

    • @NictheAngel
      @NictheAngel 3 месяца назад +161

@@piratesswoop725 Yeah I know it's usually due to tied scores but there's been at least one case where two teams shared an Olympic gold because of controversy over judging. In the winter 2002 Olympics, the original silver-medalists for pair figure skating Jamie Salè and David Pelleti were upgraded to gold, sharing with the original gold medalists Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. This was changed because an investigation revealed one of the judges allegedly was going to vote for the gold medalists regardless of their performance. So it's not entirely unheard of even without tied scores.

Sabrina deserved the medal it should have been an easy choice. But like always the judges support the U.S. and thought they would get away with it again unfortunately this one was easy to see that Jordan didn’t win so they had to retract. Ray and her husband helped quickly throw together a break dancing panel of judges. Ray Gunn was not only a part of creating this committee, her husband was one of the judges! Many Australian breakdancers couldn’t travel last minute or didn’t even know about it. When you see the people who even were informed that she beat to get to the Olympics it’s tragically clear that dancers in Australia were ROBBED, which is not cool obvi

Yeah. At first I saw it and laughed. It's interpretive dance, not really what you would expect of break dancing and not the best stage for it.
Then I saw a bunch of Australians pointing out that she's not the best break dancer in their country and that how she was decided to be the representative was rigged.
Like, it was so important for her to make this statement that she robbed someone else of their chance at the Olympics. I can't get behind that

When some of the athletes through social media started to speak out, then the Italians did too, at first shyly and jokingly, then really complaining openly. However, as usual, the French covered everything by talking about “record attendance,” “record tickets,” and other things that I am sure the public liked, while the athletes were reduced to extras. As an Italian, I’ve spend the last week of the Olympics being incredibly ashamed of rooting for my country because we got internationally criticized for what Angela Carini did, AND RIGHTFULLY SO. She is a disgrace to her sport and sport in general.
All I can say is that it was clearly heavily influenced by politics. We are currently governed by far right extremists who refuse to declare themselves antifascists (they had the chance, the decide to specifically avoid that word) and perpetuate discriminatory behavior against all already discriminated people. The “rumors” of Imane Khelif being a trans woman were shared on twitter by Italian politicians in charge and later enabled a hate campaign against her. I REPEAT: THE HIGHEST OFFICES OF STATE SHARED FAKE NEWS AGAINST IMANE KHELIF MAKING CARINI LOOK LIKE THE POOR VICTIM OF AN UNFAIR FIGHT.
The day Angela Carini had that whole dramatic breakdown on the ring, Giorgia Meloni (Italy’s prime minister, far right and self declared nostalgic of the regime) was in Paris and they had a whole photoshoot ready of her hugging Angela and comforting her after the unfair fight.
Angela said “this is not fair, I’m not stopping here” and then a couple of days later announced she was “done with boxing”. Truly a circus.
Angela Carini, that same day, talked to journalists and praised Giorgia from head to toe.
Just a couple of days ago, it was revealed that Angela Carini is starring in a commercial promoting the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge, a project promoted mainly by the Italian right wing.
So yeah, I really ended up hating everybody. Except for Imane. Love her. She deserves her gold medal and deserves to count her money after all the people she has sued 💕💕

The fact that they didn't even let the US Gymnastics reps know about the appeal until 3 days after they should have, and didn't allow them time to disprove the false allegations about the jury being four seconds late, makes it feel very political. another thing about the iman situation that i feel like not enough people are talking about (outside of arab countries), is that it's not only sexist, implying there's a certain way women should look, but also a racist one. some of our women may not fit the very european/white image of what a woman looks like, but that does not make them any less women. to me she does not look like a man in the first place, i see women that look like her all the time in my day to day, and i can't help but think others struggle to see that because they're judging based on what they conceive to be a "normal looking" woman. if a woman is not "feminine" looking enough to them they must not be women at all to them. and this kinda thing has happened before to black women athletes (go figure..)
another really upsetting thing about the olympics is, despite russia and belarus being banned from participating because of their crimes against ukraine, israel was allowed to participate. it doesn't matter if they've committed countless WAR CRIMES against the people of gaza, cuz last time i checked they, well, were not white.

My siblings and I grew up break dancing... and It's an odd feeling. IMO a lot of break dancers grow up in the most impoverished communities and being able to reach the highest stage.. requires a lot of resources.
I fell off but I still watch my family and their crew constantly adapting; trying to even find even the dance space to practice in, while each of them juggling multiple jobs, and going to school. Heck, my brother even teaches break dancing at the local HS and college to make some extra cash. Travelling to a jam or to a breakdance cypher, tends to cost more than any of the earnings, if any.
Idk.. but to reiterate, a small part of me is glad Breakdancing was able to reach the olympics but it's sad that the most attention it has gotten, isn't the skill and technique.. but some white woman doing belly slides and a kangaroo thing. Hot take: while she's not actually terrible, It def leaned more into interpretive dancing. It shows that a bit of privilege may not get you a gold medal, but it can take you to the world stage, over the dozens of amazing breakdancers, I've met in my life.

Many uni students were ejected from their appartements to home the tourists, cleaning la Seine cost 1 billion and a half of euro which is extremely expensive and la Seine is still dirty (you can look up online the batshit crazy stuff found in it it is awful). The metro price tickets skyrocketed and is unlikely to lower for a long time, homeless people were moved out of Paris even those who had a job. They asked retired people to volunteer for security during the event, they had a contract with Coca Cola which tried to greenwash their participation but most bottles sold or distributed during the games were not recycled and not recyclable. Outside of the restaurants were surrounded by barriers making people drinking people feel like they were in a zoo. They also closed many areas for cars which made a big mess for people working in those areas.
The opening ceremony scene was based on Dionysos' representations and not the last supper. The artist who made the ceremony said it publicly.

Exhibiting XY chromosome traits and the physiology that comes with that should prevent that person from competing in the XX division of sports. Gender actually plays a huge role in that regard. Though there are plenty of examples where female identifying persons have beat out male identifying persons (aw yeah Billie Jean). But otherwise, male physiology matters where strength and overall power matters. Otherwise i'm not here to parse the rest of your statement(s) because, yep, true story, regardless of chromosomes (and that includes intersex persons), you can be whomever the hell you want to be and don't need permission to identify with what feels right for you. The whole Olympics is basically a showcase of various genetic freaks (I mean this as a compliment) who have therefore been able to achieve fantastically highly in their fields. Like Michael Phelps had basically the ideal swimmer's body, down to his ankles being double-jointed and his armspan being wider than average, therefore making his butterfly stroke more efficient than others'. Imagine being kicked out of your student housing for Olympians who’d rather sleep on the sidewalk and it’s all the blame of your government; smh! 🤦🏾‍♀️
Edit/note: I meant that it must be horrible to be kicked out of your housing and watch the olympians suffer in their housing too (Olympians weren’t the cause of their kick out directly but the tourism aspect was). 17:17 ON RAYGUN: The situation is much worse than even discussed here. She apparently was calculated in what she was doing from the start as she has former academic"research" about white folks' ability to navigate "hip-hop culture & spaces'" by utilizing their privilege, especially in academic spaces, to be able to appear more legitimate. She herself was a long time ballroom & jazz dancer and only decided to learn breaking when it was announced as an Olympic event because she was bitter about ballroom being rejected as a potential event (it is considered too dated, though she did say at one point too that she decided to learn breaking to make sure Australia didn't look bad...).
There's also reports that she also only qualified because she was able to afford to travel to multiple events (it took three for her to qualify) & pay the fees for competing, while she funded her own peers (academics & former ball room dancers new to breaking) in doing so as well while not actually connecting with the already existing breaking communities in Australia. The judges deciding who qualified in Australia also knew her personally because the IOC had selected the WDSF to be the judges of who qualified, and those judges in Australia were primarily ballroom judges & academics. So while I dont necessarily agree with the wording/energy, the commenter isn't completely wrong: she did purposely take the place of skilled people in an almost social experiment trying to back up her research.

The thing with boxer Imane Khelif that many people are forgetting is that in Algeria being Trans is illegal and the punishment is jail as well as fines. Algeria is very anti LGBTQ which is why so many death threats have been happening and why she has been so strong in saying she isn't trans, not being outraged would culturally at home be seen as a huge insult to the entire country. Having one of their athletes being accused of being Trans is a huge insult to them.

While your overall comment is true, there are a couple things that are very important to mention. Imane has not been “so strong” about saying she’s not trans; she’s basically never mentioned it at all, and the vast, vast majority of Algeria supports Imane and doesn’t believe the transvestigation. Most Algerians I’ve heard from are kind of laughing at it and/or considering it too ridiculous to take seriously. The death threats were not coming from transphobic Algerians, it was from transphobic Westerners.
Why has the country with more strict anti-LGBT laws been way more supportive and accepting of this woman not conforming to stereotypical roles than people in places like the UK and the US? Part of it is because she’s been a famous and successful boxer representing her country proudly for years already, and yes, may or may not have been as supported by her country if she was less accomplished, but part of it is also Islamophobia and racism.
Women of color are way more likely to be the victims of “transvestigator” conspiracies (Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, and Zendaya have all gotten this treatment), especially when they’re successful and visible in a place that people subconsciously assume would (or should) be held by a white person. That’s a big part of why the hate against Imane was so strong among white, right-wing western circles (the fact that her beating a white woman “sparked” this was both very telling and very familiar) and basically nonexistent among actual Algerians.

"Like idk maybe use ultrasound or smth??????" Or maybe not use something at all. Like, it's only the women's category that sees these invasive, embarrassing, not conclusive, and quite often wrong gender-tests.
Hormonal tests are also problematic, because of how testosterone is a hormone that varies stark in the amount measured based on the time of day at which the bloodsample was taken (this is true for both men and women by the way), but in women who experience a period will also fluctuate based on the time in their cycle the bloodsample get's taken.
Which is why that as well is so problematic.
The weird thing is: we have a very good way of checking if someone is eligible to participate. We call them statistics, game results, championships won... That kind of thing.
But the thing you mentioned is exactly what gender-critical feminists, who love to claim they are in favor of protecting women, just like some sporting unions claim they are are now heavily supporting: the idea that the protection of women from transwomen is best served by shoving a speculum inside of them...
And that's why I am saying for a couple of years now that transphobia is never limited to trans-women. The mere idea that there needs to be a very strict definition of femininity used to exclude anyone who by whatever standard doesn't adhere to it, will hurt, and has provably hurt cis-women.
But gender-critical feminists don't care, they really don't care. And the clearest example of that was given by Rowling. It's just racism and sexism, for her explicitly showing that Western beauty standards are the only allowed and correct one.
And even then, people like Rowling will be capable of singling out a cis-women not adhering to those standards enough.

-they kicked out all uni students in social housing to fit in staff for the olympics instead as well as police and policemen complained about how much their little cramped room sucked. Like yeah dude. But somehow nobody listened to students when they were the ones complaining.
-they also kicked out all the homeless as well which in Paris is a whole lot of people!
-don't get me started on the "swiming in the Seine" thing. Fucking stupid and stupidly expensive. So much so that we were debating if we should all agree on a date to take a shit in the Seine. But i think that was cancelled.
-and while they were spending MORE THAN ONE BILLION EUROS to clean up the Seine people in Mayotte dont have access to clean water and people in Guadeloupe and Martinique suffer from they water supplies being cut off regularly.
-also our political landscape changed drastically right before the beginning of the olympics and we were about to elect a new prime minister and secure more seats on the Left and the president was basically like yeah but how about a time out just until the end of the olympics. And after it was over he's saying yeah but i like the way it is now i don't want to change it even if you guys clearly just voted for a more left leaning government, i don't agree so i'm just going to ignore you.

But during the final weigh-in, she was 100 g (0.22 pounds) over the limit despite her best efforts. So the committee decided to retroactively take away her silver medal and disqualify her from competing for any other medal. It was heartbreaking to follow because many people were aware of her story and had seen her come close to clinching a medal in the previous Olympics she participated in. LOVED this video, but you didn't even mention the organization FIASCO of it all lmao
Please do a part 2 including that!!
Here are some stuff you can look for:
    - The cardboard beds led delegations to buy mattresses for their athletes/had them bringing their own
    - They forgot to pick up the skaters, who had to go back to the olympic village on their skates then take a cab (Rayssa Leal, Paris bronze medalist, talked about it on her IG stories)
    - The first few days, buses didn't have air conditioning and couldn't open the windows during SUMMER, plus they would be late to pick them up (confirmed by Brazilian table tennis player Bruna Takahashi on her ig stories, but other ppl said it as well)
    - Pools weren't as deep as they should've been
    - Food was terrible and they wasn't enough protein
    - Seine River was dirty and athletes got hospitalized (Claire Michel and Daniel Wiffen)
Had this been an Asian, African or Latin American country, everyone would've said it was terrible and they should never host again, let's be honest
PS: US basketball team stayed in a 5 star hotel - which I think should be prohibited for all athletes to avoid unbalanced competitions. If it's good enough for one, should be good enough for all. Exceptions should only be made for individual athletes with children.

The rabid transphobia from Rowling, Musk, Richard Dawkins, the Paul brothers, Piers Morgan and others honestly ruined the games for me. I usually really enjoy the Olympics but I was horrified by the amount of anti-LGBT hatred this year

Speaking of positive things that marked these Olympics for me - one of the highlights:
Serbian basketball team getting the bronze in the morning, immediately going to a Serbian-style bar somewhere in Paris, drinking, celebrating and singing there, coming to the medal ceremony absolutely HAMMERED to the point they were leaning and stumbling on the podium and constantly laughing at eachother, then going back to Serbia where they continued celebrating in different ways. Team captain was most recently seen laying on the hood of (his?) car positively drunk after exiting a club LMAOO

My favourite part of this years Olympics was Henrik "The Muffin Man" Christiansen who ate a little too many chocolate muffins he so loved and got popular for, that he finished dead last in swimming. He was having the time of his life with those muffins and I loved all the tiktoks that were trying to decipher the recipe for the muffin.

I hope Imane sues Musk and Rowling and gets something out of it. My mom was insufferable about this. She briefly accepted that Imane is a woman (after I corrected her) but then got all wishy-washy "I don't know, it's hard to tell." When I told it's illegal to be trans in Algeria, she talks about how they'd get killed in countries like Algeria that make it illegal to be gay/trans, completely missing the point. It's hard to tell if she's insane or fucking with me.

No because I just had to listen to a sermon today where the pastor brought up Imane and referred to her as "he", so I checked a couple of sources(I already knew the guy was wrong, I just wanted more info) and brought it up with my dad and he basically told me that people can lie(as in, Imane and everyone else could potentially be lying about her being cis) so I need to be careful where I get my sources from. ???????

As an Australian, we don’t claim Raygun.
There’s so much focus on her performance that everyone is forgetting she definitely manipulated things to get where she did. We have genuinely talented and passionate dancers and she was a joker who cheated her way to the olympics.
She deserves whatever she gets at this point.

This kinda thing happend in the Olympics fairly frequently. Idk why this case in paticular has caught so much anger when there has been cases of people that only learned how to swim a year ago competing in swimming.
      And people have loved them
