It's so sad seeing what's left - or what isn't left - of this lovely town. I came here for 15 years of summer holidays growing up and loved every one. I was devastated when Kinderland closed, and now I have my own wee boy I'm even more gutted that he won't ever experience it. Great video, very nostalgic and sad but also very invocative of happy memories. Would've liked it even more if you could've gone round what used to be Kinderland in the video, like you did with Mr Marvel's, but looking at those gates I guess you couldn't gain access. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.

Yeah Kinderland was fenced off unlike the other. As I saw on the drone, nothing left at all in there anyway.

I lived in Scarborough from 82 to 86 and loved it. Marvels was fabulous and I had many a happy ride on the cable car from the park down to Scalby Mills. I remember when Marvels was the Zoo and Marineland in the 70's, fabulous memories. Scarborough has lost so much of what made it a great place thanks to systematic destruction by their awful local council who really need stringing up. I also loved Atlantis which was originaly called the Water Scene. This was a fabulous nostalgia trip for me so thanks very much for sharing. Great job as usual.

Another great video Darren, this one touched with nostalgic sadness and memories similar to the Filey Butlins story, maybe rose coloured glasses ? but certainly less simpler and less technological times. I particularly love your fade in and out , then and now comparison shots, you obviously put a lot of time in matching them up so perfectly. Wonderful little films, I look forward to the next. Kind regards.

Me & my step sister never went to the first one you showed we only went to kinderland & Atlantis water park. It was in the 90s when my dad lived in Scarborough when he & his wife owned & ran a guest house just up the road from Peashome Park. It was called The Pondarosa on Columbus ravine.
Also on the seafront was a building (name escapes me) and we saw the chuckle brothers live there one Saturday. I haven’t been since about 1999 as my dad moved back here to South Yorkshire when he got divorced. He passed away in 2017 & I always wanted to go back but was scared it would bring back to many memories & emotions for me. Thank you for this - it allowed me to see it all over again 💜

We had many happy times at Scarborough when my Kids were little. Atlantis, Kinderland, the cable car and the fair. We all remember them, and it's very sad now they have all gone. The British seaside resorts have been in decline for many years now, except maybe Blackpool and Brighton. Hopefully things will change for the better now, as more folk will holiday more in this country due to the ever changing restrictions for holidays abroad.

Very interesting, I used to go on holiday in Scarborough in the 80s & 90s and remember it fondly, except the time we got thrown out of Atlantis for causing a traffic jam on one of the slides as kids do ;) It is a shame that the Marvel's and Kinderland have closed, the North Bay has always struggled compared to the South Bay. The last time I visited was on a day trip and Atlantis had been closed for a while with some of it knocked down and the rest being used as a paintball type place, I'm glad that they at least built another waterpark and that it's indoors, it used to be freezing standing on the staircase in the wooden shack waiting to get on the slides ;) I'm glad that the miniature railway lives on and of course the battleships in Peasholm Park :)

Loved seeing the area before and after. I have a memory of going to see dolphins perform up that hill in one of the pools. There was also a small theatre building near the entrance that housed a fake Gorilla (or something similar) in a cage, at the front. The prank was that the cage would open, and it would escape. I and everyone else started running out of the building. I remember getting trampled on by everyone running out. I don't think the dolphins were looked after very well, so I'm glad that they had to close that part of it down.

Yes! I can put some flesh on the bones of that reminiscence. Obviously a man in a gorilla suit would prowl back and forth behind the bars, growling ominously, while some bloke whose second job was probably a bingo caller would give a running commentary, ‘The Missing Link from Borneo, ladies and gentlemen. Don’t poke him through the bars, he doesn’t like that. An animal when he’s roused, etc. etc. …’
Meanwhile the ‘gorilla’ was becoming increasingly enraged, shaking the bars and roaring, until finally he threw open the door …
I’m surprised the whole show hasn’t made it into the psychological textbooks. I mean, everybody knew that he was just a man in a gorilla suit. Didn’t they … ?

Great video thank you so much. I live in the Midlands now and watching the video brought back so many memories. I worked at Scarborough Zoo and Marine Land as it was known before it became Marvels. I used to operate the the chair lift and helped service the pylons. You can see on your video the gear for making yhe ride work rotate. The upright gear box sits in a shoe and hydrolic rams push the winding gear back to tighten the cable and allow the wheel to gain traction on the cable. I was the Dodgem mechanic there for a while (the sea air constantly caused the Dodgems to break down). I also worked the Waltzer and used to get black and blue falling over when trying to spin the cars. (A skill I never aquired) I also operated the Rollercoater. I think we got paid 50p an hour. The park used to have many animals including Dolphins, monkeys and a parrot show. It was owned by a local millionaire Don Robinson and the park was run by an ex wrestler called Tommy Hanson. I also worked for Albert Corrigan (of the famous showmen family) at the Scalby Mills Amusements. This was a lively amusement park with a mini Butlins (Colleys Camp) a stones throw away. At Scalby Mills I worked the Ghost Train and the Astroglide. (A huge 40ft high fibre glass slide) At Scalby Mills there used to be a large cafe , a pub, a parade of gift shops, Amusements, Bingo and Junior rides (Jeeps and Jets). At low tide you could wade out to "Monkey Island". Scarborough Council demolished the lot to make way for a sewerage station. Now the Miniture railway comes to a dead end unless you want to spend a small fortune at the sea Life Centre. Opposite where Atlantis was there was a funicular tram which took you up to the Floral Hall Theatre. I remember seeing many amazing summer shows there with big names such as Barbara Windsor. Scarborough Council decided to sell the antique Tram to another council and demolish the Floral Hall. It was replaced with an indoor bowling centre.

I'm from Whitby, growing up in the 70's and 80's and we'd usually go to one of the North Bay attractions once a month during summer. Marvels was a bit low budget and ramshackle but fun, Kinderland was amazing to us but we also nicknamed it Injuryland as we'd always come away with some large bruises, splinters, friction burns or big gouges (as you could easily have your foot go into the springs of the trampolines) but best of all was Waterscene (as it was known when it opened). In my teen years we'd sneak in at night when it was shut and drunkenly mess around in the pools as the security was very lax. Thanks for the great video and memories that flooded back.

Used to have holidays in Scarborough for several years as a kid, as my Dad used to suffer from really bad travel sickness. Many happy memories! I remember going on the cable cars with my Grandad, and visiting the old park on the top. I remember there being some huge resin cast dinosaurs up there, and me and my sister pestering my Mam to let us go on the roller coaster...which we screamed to be let off when it started as it scared us witless! I worked a summer as a lifeguard at Atlantis when we lived on Peasholm Drive 30 years ago. The best spot was at the bottom of the slides as you could stand in the water to cool off a bit. One of the first jobs of the day was to walk up the slides to check for damage and twigs/leaves. The tiles around the edge of the pool were always slippery compared to the surrounding tarmac/concrete so quite a few banged heads and backs when people weren't careful when running and jumping in. Sad to see it as it is now.

Whilst Kinderland was a bit after my time, I do remember the rides on the train as well as the occasional treat on the watersplash.
I did, as a child, get to ride the cable car but recall little of the amusements at the top of the hill.
The water park was always busy, not to mention the vivid blue slides really stood out, and the pavilion where those flats now stand.
How times have changed, and I guess it's not much of a surprise as to its demise as it was so far away from the harbour and other sea-front attractions.

I think I’ve only been to Scarborough once, that was when I was at annual camp in Ripon with the army cadets, probably in the mid 1980’s. I must visit again soon!

Used to love going to Scarborough all the time as a kid, don't live far away. Carried on going with my own children, lots of great memories.
It's absolutely criminal what they've done the place the last decade or so, North bay's wrecked, Futurist gone, the largest theatre outside London, to be replaced by a tinpot wheel. Scandalous. Don't bother going anymore.

North Bay wrecked?!! Err no, Scarborough North Bay is beautiful! As it should be, natural rock pools and not spoiled with loads of amusement arcades!
You go to South Bay side for those.
North Bay is idyllic for children with the rock pools. Peasholm Park and the lovely Peasholme Glen walk 👌

I remember all these things well and wondered why they closed and were left to rot and also why the land is still like it is!!! Thanks for sharing what it’s like. I’m Bridlington blooded and visited their often. Will follow your walks next time I’m there. Great stuff. Oh and so glad to see the water chute is still running!!!

Been racking my brain for years trying to remember what chair lift I went on as a kid where you had to jump off at the end like that, I was only a child at the time but have a vivid memory of riding only 2 chair lifts in my life, here and at Butlins skegness. They terrify me lol. Pretty sure I also went on that mini railway at scarborough too. I only remember several sites we went on holiday as kids. Blackpool, Skeggy, Mablethorpe, Cleethorpes, Whitby and Scarborough. We also did the Tram things from the beech to street level (hasnt everyone lol). One silly thing I do remember too, my mum worked at a textile factory and took a bag of her work to Scarborough when we went on holiday as a family. Imagine 5 of us on holiday, wrapping sweatbands onto card and bagging them up on the flipping beech!

Me and a friend tunneled underneath the fence (on the main road!) to get into Kinderland, several times, until we got caught and turfed out. Watersplash (as it was called for a time in the 90's) was great and had the river rapids built onto the side also, which was my favourite.
