I've lived in Scarborough now for at least 10 years (born in Robin-Hoods-Bay) and it's great seeing this film of how it used to be - pure archive gold-dust! Thank you so much for posting.
I had a family holiday in the resort as a kid in 1968, took the touring caravan, remember the model boats battle in the park. Holiday savings purchase was a C16 Scalextric Ferrari P4, still got it today. A smashing film, record of days gone by, never to return, a slower less frantic time. A last throw of the dice before ww2, some of the folks in the film would never return .
Thanks so much for the upload. My Dad told me stories: He'd been there on holiday with his parents at the outbreak of WW2. He was amazed as the Landlady where they were staying, was ready for war in 20 minutes. Gas mask, tin hat etc. Thanks again.
Thrilled to bits to watch this, all family holidays spent in Scarborough from the fifties onwards. Still go there and rent a Spa chalet, the South side of Scarborough is my favourite part. Anyone interested in William Morris and the Pre Raphaelites should visit St Martins on the Hill Church, mind blowing, fabulous place. Still get sad and angry to see the Spa pool in its heyday, now no longer there, had such fun in that pool right up till the eighties. Thank you so much for posting this.
What a gorgeous, nostalgic film, just taken to record a holiday, but now a walk back in time, love the South side, in all honesty its all about the same, except of course the outdoor pool has gone, apart from the hair styles the Clock cafe looks just the same, thank you so much for sharing this film with us.
Great film. I first went to Scarborough in 1945 and went for many years. Still go frequently. Lots of visitors in the film and a lot less cars. Thanks for sharing this film. Tony
HI Tony i first visited Scarborough in 1994.The pool was in a rough condition not unsaveable.Did you swim in the pool a lot and what year did you last swim in it.Gutted its gone take care Steve.
superb footage,my dad would have been about 12-13 then he worked the beach his father my grandad Billy Hart owned the swingy boats on the sea front back then and my Grandmother Vena Valente had an ice cream company "Valentes ices"fantastic bit of footage
I grew up in Yorkshire and knew Scarborough well - lovely to see how it was then. Notice the cerulean blue skies without the covert geoengineering stripes and constant haze dimming the sun going on today
Not sure exactly when my grandparents first went to scarborough, my grandmother was stationed near scarborough during the war, at an internment camp. I was an incredibly special place for them, many a wonderful holiday spend there, I know they stayed in the grand hotel, somewhere I took my family to share an experience from over 60 years previous. I remember sitting in Pacitos some time in the 80's enjoying a knickerbocker glory when my grandmother remarked of sitting in the same ice cream parlour during the war... Ah the memories... Fantastic footage, thanks for sharing, brought a tear to my eye...

Colour movie film was phenomenally expensive in 1939 - probably two or three times the price of black and white, after processing. I think this is 16mm film, which was already very expensive and generally out of the financial reach of most ordinary people. This amateur photographer must have been either wealthy or very committed. From the appearance, this was early Kodachrome, which came out in 1935. Check out some of the colour movies done by Eva Braun. She used Agfa colour film. Not as good as Kodachrome, IMO but good nevertheless.

great film from 81 years ago now, and indeed ww2 started in just a couple of weeks. hard to believe but all in this film have now probably passed away.
What get me are the fashions for the women. In the space of 20 years women's fashion had gone from full on Victorian long dresses and massive hats in 1919 to scantily clad bathing suits in 1939. The dramatic revolution in dress is quite amazing.
Fascinating, even the footage at the end of the mere and what looks like a newly built Edgehill estate, now long gone. I lived in Scarborough from 1977 until 84, alot of the chalets and the pool was still there then. Love this film and would love to know the family story
Paul Ross, My grandfather (the man in glasses) was a keen cinematographer, and this was his last summer holiday with my grandmother (the lady in the black trouser suit) and my father. The family were living in London but my grandmother was from Hartlepool and so places along the NE coast were favourite holiday destinations. My grandfather died in August of the following year.
Really enjoyable. However it's terrifying for me in that the time that passed between the filming and my first visit to Scarborough (24ish years) is much less than the elapsed time between today and my last visit there (30+ years)!
Incredible look at a vanished World. The older generation always tell about wonderful Summers of the past but this indicates it wasn’t very warm on that August day when this was filmed.😁
We happened to be walking past this several years ago and the council were knocking it down and burning all the huts and changing rooms. I had my video camera and taped it. Really sad because we used to swim there in the 1960s.
Ah. Well, I'm no expert in these things. I simply gave the reels of film to a company to have it all put on disk. This was some years ago now, but if I were to do the process again I will be sure to take some more expert advice. Thank you.
People just like us enjoying themselves, probably during the bank holiday weekend in late August, not knowing what's about to hit them just days later. Who knows if something similar might hit us shortly.
Month later: WW2... Years later: end of WW2. 48 years later: Holbeck hall fell into the sea 14 years later: I came to life 12 years later: Luna park lost the wheel Others: pool closed down, a water park closed down and Alpamare came, a theme park was abandoned near open air theatre. Others: not much...
Scarborough look so busy in the old days they spent so much time out doors l wasn't born in this year and my dad wasn't he born 1934 l were born in the 60s
Wonderful, wonderful film. A great slice of social history. I know the summer of 1939 was especially hot and one that the British holiday makers could get the most from. Good job too with what was just around the corner. Shocking to think that some of the people in this film well have been bombed out or worse killed in German bombing in a little over a year's time. Moreover some could have been killed on active service overseas.
Scarborough was once a shining fun town. Now not so much. Shame really. Those people that have sat in the positions of power and steered the decline over several decades should be ashamed. But they won't. They will see it as a job well done.
Hello, Mark. My 11 yrs old daughter is making her own MV just for fun. She is singing Scarborough Fair. I am wondering if she could use this video as her video background? Thank you very much!
