- Update 2021: Additional tests have been done to ensure that the Defender PHEV variant shares the 2020 rating of the Land Rover Defender, watch the updated video • Euro NCAP Crash & Safe...
Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
- a frontal impact test, 50% of the width of the car is striking an oncoming deformable barrier, also travelling at 50 km/h
- a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid full width barrier
- a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
- a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole.
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled as well as AEB pedestrian and cyclist tests.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking car-to-car scenarios, occupant status monitoring (including seatbelt reminders), lane support and speed assistance technologies.

All jokes aside, that’s a best case scenario
Where have those Jeep Wranglers fans gone to now? The Wrangler only got a 1 star rating!
*Crying in the corner
Yes because it’s a body in frame brick that doesn’t absorb any energy because it doesn’t really have crumble zones ,and it also doesn’t have many safety electronics system like the defender ,but it is build tougher than the defender and I rather be in a wrangler if I was on an accident because it would just demolish the other vehicle and making the other vehicle absorbing all the energy through its crumble zones
@@12Achilleas that is not how crash physics works. But Jeep knows exactly their customers profile, and they play with their (your) beliefs.
And it works.
@@12Achilleas That’s not how physics work son... Weight, mass and energy distribution is at play. The ladder frame of the wrangler wont crumple sure, but the high energy of the impact will just disperse somewhere else along the body and frame of the car (the passengers), and THAT’S what can kill you. Meanwhile cars with crumple zones will just absorb impacts and prevent harm or injury to the cabin by dispersing that high energy by CRUMPLING as much as possible. Wranglers weigh anywhere around 4000-4400 pounds, Defenders weigh around 4700-5000 pounds; the higher mass Defender will dismantle your feather-weight Wrangler and mangle you up without even flinching if both cars were to crash into each other. Not to mention the Jeep might (un)surprisingly roll over. Call ‘em what you want, but one thing Land Rovers are is hella safe.
@@theldaniel170 thanks for you comment sir , I kindly disagree thaw as a student that studies mathematics and physicals science , the in a head on crash between a 4 door jeep jl and a defender at the same speed the defender would have approximately 5% more kinetic energy than the Jeep ,which is certainly no big difference , the energy which will not be absorbed by the Jeep will also have to be absorb by the crumble zone of the other vehicle and the Jeep’s passengers ,also the Jeep jl frame sits very high and in a head on crash between two vehicles it might override the others vehcile crumble zones
This is literally one hell of a tank.
In 50 kmph 😂
You need tank of money to buy it
peter71641 still? better than worse
@@sevens6666 This is not pretty enough...
peter71641 uh not suvs have to be pretty, pretty sure you’ll like it irl cus even we have one and it looks nicee
There are very few cars that have done the ncap head on crash that didn't crack the windshield or puncture the front tyres. That is very impressive.
It looks really secure, really nice job. Love the defender btw
@@lor7780 Sorry how can that be? You and me watch the video! Of course they can't mimic real life, that's for sure ok, but those tests are serious and aimed to really test a car's safety. They aren't showing each and every test they've done I think, but nonetheless you can take this video as real as it is.
@@lor7780 haha cry baby

@Omega ?
@Omega yes but the Tesla modle X is 3x more expensive, so you would hope it to be that high
Is this a tank or an SUV? Maybe it's both!
safe man but not safe wallet
Right, in 5 years the repairs will probably cost half or more of the retail price of it when it was purchased. It's a rover, the drive well but not for long before it's time to feed it lots of money.
I really like this body style though, very nice. Haven't like the looks of any rovers since they pissed away the Discovery II series, I've got an 03

@War.L _ that shit doesn't even require brain cells, to point out the fact that u can't own one.🙂
This car lives up to its name!!! Love this car a lot!!!
Hi 😊
True
Finally! Was waiting to see this. Apart from off-road capabilities, I require decent safe systems. I'm pleased to say, that it meets my expectations.
It exceeds my expectations in aspects of kill capability towards smaller cars.
@@DashCamSerbia Well that's something that I predict may be an advantage for some. It'll be even easier to assist when NCAP will have introduce new test. Allegedly cars will be scored for protection of other vehicles. I can easily imagine tanks on wheels advertised as constructed with no compromise on passenger safety. Even now, when I buy a car I expect it to protect me the best it can and that's what I'm willing to pay for.
@@fenoldaston Yes, it was penalised for excessive damage to the mobile barrier. You can read the report in the PDF.
I was waiting for the results too. Need something steady to protect against way too many people texting while driving their massive trucks, suburbans, and other monsters on the road. Anybody buying a car can figure out that a small car or something like a Wrangler, is not a good place to be in an accident unless the other person texting was also driving a little car.
Are you buying one?
It's crazy how stiff the chassis is, especially compared to the old defender
It's defender it can defend anything 💪💪💪
not the wallet
not its own reputation!
Lol it barely flinched in the frontal offset, cos its so big and heavy
It literally look like the old defender after that frontal crash
you mean scrap ; not fit for road.
Best ive seen on the crash tests some car like well done to designer's and engineers manufacturers 👍👌👏👏👏👏
The videos show impressive results: It’s a tank. However, a more careful reading of the report indicates an 85% rating for the frontal impacts - which might sound great, but is actually comparatively poor. Many vehicles have ratings in the high 90s. Why? Because it rated “marginal” when it came to knee and leg protection. Why? well maybe because there are no knee bags to protect against “femur rigid dashboard structure “. So, Land Rover, WHY didn’t you install knee airbags? Having just ordered this vehicle in part because it seemed and felt “tank like”, I am now rather pissed off to learn that in the unfortunate event I may have a “frontal impact” I will unlikely be walking away and instead have mangled legs. So tell us, Land Rover, why didn’t you figure this one out and install knee airbags?
Because they just aren’t as obsessed with safety as say Volvo is. They’re probably relying on the mass and stiffness of the vehicle more than clever engineering and targeted safety measures like knee bags. It also doesn’t deform as much as the Volvo’s and probably sends more energy to the passengers because of that. Still a very safe vehicle I imagine, but probably not as safe as a large Volvo per the ratings. A lot safer than an MG convertible though, or a mini, so all relative.
Mad how my 2011 range rover has a knee airbag but not a 2020 defender...
It Really Justifies It's name 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It definitely means it's name Defender. The defence it provides for it's passenger during a crash is fantastic!! Good job Tata Motors 👌😊👍.

This was a different test. Here I didn't see a small frontal overlap crash, just the regular one. And no, I'm not a Wrangler guy.
Once you have tried a rover off road then jeep becomes synonymous with joke, exactly what I thought when I traded my 03 Grand Cherokee for an 02 Discovery, it went places on in stock form my joke of a jeep wouldn't go with a 4" lift and 33" tires.
So they smashed 4 cars for the whole test. That's a lot of money
Think how expensive it is when they crash test luxury cars like rolls royces!
@@PoloDaBear they never do it’s too expensive to afford 4 of them
Which they will make up selling a few cars, as these are severely overpriced

The front impact quite literally did tiny amounts of damage which shows how bloody tough these are. Safe as well and will remain that way.

That defender is safe man
Although, 85% for adult occupation isn’t amazing.
Easy to roll over..
Seat Leon is better

Impressive but in my opinion this car and other very big cars are tho dangerous to other cars.

Bruh Doug DeMuro
So what did you learnt: that take a uturn when you see a Defender .
Everybody: "Wow, it's so though! Land Rover did a great job!"
From the 11 new cars that have been tested by NCAP in 2020 it has the 7th best score. The isuzu D-max, a pretty standard looking recent pickup, gets almost the same score. Wake up people, this is just how new cars should work, there is nothing impressive about it.
The lack of damage is impressive. It may not have the best results but the frame is exceptionally solid
So is jeep wrangler this safe
This is my dream Car ❤️😘.But I can't buy. I miss you
Why frontal crash at 50 kph and the other car at 64???
Euro NCAP : Let's test the New Defender
Defender : Let me end this man's whole career
I am feeling safe without even buying this.
"Progresive" deformable barrier instead of a solid deformable barrier is a joke. It has basically the weight of a city car, it has no logic in this test. A 2.5 ton suv has much more kinetic energy due to its mass., so the light moving barrier proves absolutely nothing in a frontal collision.
They should have put you in charge as you know😂
Saw one today, beast of a car.
superb
love it
It looks really secure
Bldy hell..this is built like a tank..😳
I hated the look of the new defender when it first came out but it’s starting to grow on me now, I’ll never be able to afford one though so I’ll stick to my panda cross 4x4. Mind you my panda gets me everywhere!
Safety comes with a price🥵
This must have cost a fortune. NCAP will have had to replace everything the Defender drove into
Or maybe the cars were sent to be tested
The car company sends the car to them to be tested
1:52 dab
Is that a chunk of metal or what😂
Certainly stiff but didn't seem to have much front crumple zone either, just stopped dead. The occupants sure felt that.
It can be safer if the defender has the center airbag
Its built like a battle tank
Awesome , nice solid body.
At 0:36 . It's front became like it's rear design..
Yes
Me and my mom got in a wreck in a Honda Odyssey. One of the scariest things. The car took a bad hit on the passenger side the car spun out and the air bags were very little. me and my mom walked away hurt but ok. After that my mom bought a Land Rover and I’m happy that it’s a stronger car and safer.
You can say what you want about land rover reliabillity but they know how to build some tank like chasis
But did the Defender roll over following the side impact test? The Renault Espace did, but more and longer footage was shown from that crash test.
This has antirollbars so probably no
No frontal offset ????
Being a Jeep owner, I dislike this video
Ridiculously oversized vehicle. And the pedestrian safety rating is a joke. Vehicles should be tested on how well they protect pedestrians, and in particular, children. 71% pedestrian protection is a joke. Have you seen the height of the bonnet? You need to be in the NBA to not be pushed under the car, and even so, barely.
0:27 The Defender pushes it.
Where are the small Overlap tests? What's the reason for don't do them anymore?
Who expected the Defender to have 5 stars
Me
Ofcourse
The defender of mankind
Problem: in a crash at 30mph or more with a sedan or other lower vehicles it’s highly probable that this thing will get airborne due to its significantly high ride height. Good luck.
REALLY? REALLY? OMG!! I AM SO HAPPY! 🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️
We all are to see this car score well
It's so stupidly strong but to get 85% (vs something in the 90's like a Volvo) for adult occupants means some of the forces are being transferred to the passengers in a less than ideal fashion. Don't get me wrong, it's a safe SUV, but if you look at the detailed result it only has marginal thigh protection for driver and front passenger. Of course, it weighs over 2 tonnes so it's going to fare better against lighter vehicles but this is simulating a head on of a vehicle in the same weight class.
почему нет скорости авто на которой она предотвращает столкновение в разных тестах?! это 5 км/ч или 95 км/ч????
Странно, раньше была.
If your going to crash one of these you may as well slam it into a wall as it's no longer a rural farm stalwart and yet another Americanised Chelsea tractor. It's going to get written off at the slightest bump so may as well wreck it.
£50k+ is a crazy price for a defender leave the flash stuff for range rover. the Jimmy is the only modern 4x4 that seems to be getting it right now. Shame you can't buy one anymore.
Is it a car or something else its body remain same after such a worst collision
All the AEB tests and it didn't stop the car plowing through 2 fences and mowing down 17 parents and schoolchildren.
A gaand phaad vehicle
That's one strong car
Only at 50kmph.....test has to be done at atleast 80 to 90 kmph....because those are expensive cars
Every Arabian prince is going to have one of these lol
All the tests assume the driver was not paying attention. Don't allow idiots at the wheel and you don't have to make cars as bad as the defender. Can make trucks again and punish ppl who can't drive them.
If someone jumps out in front of my car with a gun because they want to hijack me. I don't want the car to stop for them. I need it to go faster. This is just from a south Africans point of view.
5 star rating
85% for adult occupaint
85% for child occupaint
So I am actually safer in my Toyota Cotolla.
