You just can't replicate these days of racing. Was so exciting. Makes me want to cry to see Gingers little horse battling to the end. He died 27 April 2017. R.I.P Amberleigh House. You gave me one of my happiest days in my memory. R.I.P. too Ginger reunited with your mate Rummy.
my first national winner, I read in the the sun paper in the December that ginger was retriering and amberleigh house was going to win the national well done the sun paper I got 25/1 best Christmas ever.
My son work rode Amberleigh for Ginger McCain , the little horse was out of Buckskin , and Ginger took me into his stable which belonged to Red Rum , another hero of mine , and I was aghast at how small he was , goodness me that horse had the courage of a lion ….I backed him at 16/1 and won a fair bit ….I will never forget him , a beautiful dark coat and a soft liquid eye , he was a true hero …….God bless him …….another horse I met that had the same presence was Sea Pidgeon ….
A fourth Grand National victory for the the greatest trainer of all, with his brave little warrior, Amberleigh House! Flying high now with Rummy and Ginger! Rest easy, sweetheart
I picked Amberleigh house to win after reading Ginger Mccain article in newspaper a couple of days before the race. He was waxing lyrical about his little horse and said it will definitely stay and to back it as it will finish in first 3. He said it was his best horse for national since Red Rum so i had to go for it. I also drew it out in work sweep stake, so won that too. Best national i ever had.
Graham Lee executed the Brian Fletcher tactic of 1973; he hunted the first circuit, realised Hedgehunter had gone off too fast, and waited. He took advantage of tired horses, on a proven stayer. That's the reason Graham Lee is one of the best jockeys ever, and one of the very few to have ridden the winners of big races under both codes (Lester Piggot won a Triumph Hurdle, then run at Hurst Park in the 1950's).
Wow, this and Many Clouds are still my favourite nationals, as I cleaned up as a kid with this one and even more with Many Clouds years later.. I actually saw Amerliegh House and Clan Royal a few months earlier at Aintree, and the race they gave the fans was something I won't forget.. a brilliant horse, a horse we came to love.. may God Bless his soul, and reunite him with Ginger :)
At the last fence an exhausted Hedgehunter fell heavily and just lay there, we all thought he was dead, but happily he got up and went on to win the 2005 race. Ginger McCain was a wonderful trainer. Ruby let Hedgehunter run too free otherwise he would have won.
I picked out amberleigh house when i was 8 years old picked out when my dad said to me pick a horse out of the news paper on that day 😎👌 and then on my own studying 13 years later sturdy the national my self and had one for Arthur in the 2017 race at 14\1 was a amazing day that was as well
One of the best National`s. Felt for Clan Royal who might have won had he not wandered over too far approaching the Elbow. Had even worse luck the following year when taken out by a loose horse. Possibly one of the best horses never to win the race
Amberleigh House didn't exactly come from as far back as Red Rum did in 73 but, he looked to have no chance of winning at the second last. Fantastic ride by Lee.
A nail-biting finish, very reminiscent of Rummy's amazing and near impossible feat in '73! Amber so reminded me of Rummy too; his dogged detemination and relentless running style on the run-in. Think the noseband might have added to the similarities, too! ;) Fantastic little horse, he'll be sadly missed xxx
I backed him at 14/1 ... only on the basis that " Every National has a story " , and on this occasion, it would be Ginger McCain, coming back to win it after 35+ years ... I cried !!
Did anybody else find it weird how the front three for so long were all secondary colours? The three most famous colours in jumps racing (hemmings' green and yellow quarters, mcmanus' green with gold hoops and johnsons' blue body with green sleeves), yet all of them were the second best horse in the yard. How odd. Yet the great Amberleigh House came home to trounce them all.
Bet on Amberleigh House on this race, for some reason the fact that it was Ginger McCain's runner stood out to me in a way that it never did in any other year before or since. My second winner in two years (Monty's Pass in 03) and haven't had another one since.
My hairdresser and family friend came to our house on the Saturday morning of the race. He has a huge wardrobe of clothes, and believe it or not, was wearing a navy blue jumper with red and white striped sleeves!!! A few hours later, Amberleigh House won the Grand National with the jockey wearing the same!!! What are odds against that?
I was estatic, As the two horses i had backed was amberleigh house and Clan Royal. So i had got First and second that year! I was So made up! The funny thing Is, that it is the only horse race that i put bet on As Well!
Its just not the grand national nowadays with the smaller fences should change the name out of respect for previous winners. I don’t see a horse as small as tiger roll winning back to back in these days. Tiger roll is undoubtedly a legend though. Think we’ll see more back to back winners over the next 10-20 years
I had a bet on this(as I have done most years) and 2004 was my most successful bet as Amberleigh House and Clan Royal got me just over £70 from a bet of £20 on those 2 and 2 others
Steve Copping I had amberleigh house but my most successful year was 2001 when only two finished the race proper ( red marauder 33/1 , smarty 20/1) I had £2.50 ew on both.
I backed amberleigh house that day was so delighted, but I have to mention clan royal, hes got to be one of the best horses in the national never to have won.
Probably my fave Grand National finish of my generation, such drama from the last & romantic that Ginger McCain added to his training successes with Red Rum :) mind the only thing that's mystified me from this race, whatever happened to Clan Royal's jockey Liam Cooper? He disappeared from the racing scene a month or 2 afterwards for reasons unknown :/
Took a lot of unfair stick for apparently losing control of the horse on the run-in - in actual fact had lost his whip when Clan Royal made a bad mistake a few fences out so did pretty well to keep him in with a shout under the circumstances...
@@mikelewis866 Thank you Mike, in fact found a race card I had from a Uttoxeter jumps meeting the previous September to this very National renewal & remembered getting his autograph as he left the course after winning on his last ride of the day
Anybody else think if AP had been on Clan Royal, he'd have got it home in first. The next year AP was on him but was unlucky to be hampered by a loose horse (I don't think he'd have won in 2005). Whereas Hedgehunter also had a much better jockey onboard in Ruby a year later who won on him.
What was Liam Cooper doing, should of pulled his whip through to his left hand ages before he did!! Reminiscent of Richard Pitman aboard Crisp in 1973.
If you ever get a chance to see the rerun of the race the pundits comment on the fact that Liam Cooper had infact droped his whip at some point during the race, he's using his knuckles
@@threegolfnuts5148 I take your point but I still think even allowing for him losing his whip he surely could of steered a better course after the last than he did.

i was on the mound that day backed AH at 33s, its such a joy to watch it back.
yea these day we don't see it at all
Fab race. Typical McCain horse. Full of stamina. Commentator had given up on him with 2 fences left. Wonderful stuff.
my first national winner, I read in the the sun paper in the December that ginger was retriering and amberleigh house was going to win the national well done the sun paper I got 25/1 best Christmas ever.

That horse had the heart of a lion, incredible will to win and a race that brings a tear to the eye, rest in peace stallion x

...sad news..
My daughter was born in 2004. Her name? Amberleigh.
I think its fairly obvious who I backed in the National that year!
What a lovely name to give a girl!
Great story
A wonderful win for Amberleigh House, and Ginger McCain! So reminiscent of Red Rum's magnificent victory over Crisp in '73!

I agree with you on that one
Get well soon Graham Lee I know you can pull through this.

My favourite national winners 2 but wanted monbeg dude to win in 2015
I backed Amberleigh house that day,i'd forgotten from how far back he had come from. Amasing finish
Jim McGrath was brilliant here . Great commentator
Scott Fraser loves it when they for to the turn in and Jim says theirs 3 in with a great chance and the distant 4 th wins 😂😂😂😂🐎🐎
I backed Amberleigh as well
Nothing could surpass the BBC for the GN commentary. I grew up with them!
I backed amberleigh house for 3 months what a warrior

horses falling late on in a race and lie relatively motionless, I always first think of winding.
ruby wasnt the jockry that day, david casey was !! great race though

Perfectly judged by Graham Lee and Amberleigh House :)

Now that was exciting
Me and mi dad were tipped Amberleigh House by Ginger himself at point to point at Alpraham weeks earlier
fantastic race great thanx for uploading :-)
The only time in 25 years have I picked the winner of the national the winner Amberleigh House :)

I have to say Graham Lee is a good jockey okay
what a gutsy horse Clan Royal was here. He was out on his feet from 3 out but stuck on till the finish
My favorite 00s national winner a brave horse
Great race and a fairytale ending for the McCain team
his age stopped me doing him so pleased for McCain apparently he had some of red rums hair in his tackle
£5 e/w on Amberleigh House @16/1 this year and man did I shout him home!
£10 to win because of his name! 👍
I backed him at 14/1 ... only on the basis that " Every National has a story " , and on this occasion, it would be Ginger McCain, coming back to win it after 35+ years ... I cried !!

Bechers actually started to sink that year hence the number of fallers to the 1989 levels because the land around it as a drop on the landing side
