I have to give Jon Hamner a lot of praise for his commentary. They lost the feed to Tony on the far end of the course so he had to commentate the majority of the race despite barely being able to see the action. Given the circumstance I think he did a great job.
I remember Thinking this was Like one of the old pathe News Reel Nationals, but with Heavy Ground the Horses Slowed down and there were no Serious injuries . Richard Guest and Red Marauder were Like Two Battle worn Heroes, and the Late John Hamner was masterful in describing the Action
Red Marauder was so brave this day. After this win, he only raced again 1 more time and it was almost 2 years later over hurdles. I guess this race really took its toll on him but him and the race will be remembered forever.
I was practically obsessed with this race as a kid (the National in general, but especially the 2001 running (for obvious reasons)). It was literally just a few days ago (almost exactly 20 years after the race) that I realised Khaki Krazy fell at the third. I always thought he was the 180-flipping horse at the 4th. Turns out that was plunge-favourite Inis Cara! I know this probably won't seem like much of a big deal to most people, but it blew my mind. I thought I knew this race inside-out (I literally must have watched it 100+ times in the space of a few years, sometimes more than once a day) , but all these years later this caught me out! I only realised my two-decade mistake after watching the Racing UK stream of the race. On the BBC footage Khaki's fall at the third is completely hidden by their camera angles. That's why I always assumed he was the one going at the fourth when John Hamner calls it! I doubt anyone will really appreciate how mind-blowing this was for me, but if anyone out there is going to care it's people watching this video! haha. You think you know every little intricate detail of a race for 20 years and then find out you had something totally wrong. Crazy. And for the record I "had" the legendary Addington Boy in this one (I was 9 so I couldn't exactly bet). He didn't get very far, even by the standards of this race's carnage.
This will always be my favourite Grand National. I watched it with my Dad as a kid. I had Red Marauder and my Dad had Smarty, so this was an exciting end to the race for me.
My god, watching this race was horrendous, dreadful conditions, total carnage, and to see the horses struggling to get home..... I'm not an 'anti national' person, but having been a horse rider for years myself, this was hard to watch. Brave, brave horses, God bless them all !
I agree. Also as a rider myself and one who has worked full time with horses, I know how tired horses can get. Red Marauder was exhausted, and Smarty looked as if he would keel over. I have followed the GN since I was a young girl Red won because he was lucky to keep out of trouble and he handles the mud. Blowing Wind was finishing the strongest (albeit having been remounted ). Some comments here beggar belief, especially the one by a chap who reckons it is the best GN ever! I suggest he watches 1974: sunny warm day, horses hooves rattling on the fast ground and a horse carrying top weight presenting a masterclass in how to tackle Aintree fences. That horse was Red Rum winning his second GN. That year no fatalities and lots of finishers.
This is a perfect example of how the conditions can affect this race. It had rained virtually non-stop for a week before the race creating bottomless going. There were rumours flying round the course less than an hour before the off that the race wouldn't go ahead due to the very heavy going. Me and my mates had all backed Edmond and were in line with the Chair and saw his spectacular fall. We were well gutted and piss-wet through.
Red Marauder made a shocking mistake on the first circuit, fair play to him for surviving that error and going on to win for Richard Guest, LUCK was clearly on his side that day.
DARREN BURKE yeah, I backed him 33/1, had smarty as well, was sitting watching with my dad who had backed beau, the air turned blue when beau fell, the horse was a bit unlucky with the reins stuck over his face. My lucky day though, fivers each way on both.
I backed Edmund, Beau, Blowing Wind & Smarty! Was all going so well until...it all started going horribly wrong 😂 It rained so hard that day my race card fell to pieces too!
I was at a football match this day and the announcer gave the winners out just before the second half started and said only four horses finished the race... and everyone gasped.
I will never respect anyone who calls this race a 'farce' (Alistair Down I'm looking at you). This is exactly the kind of drama, unpredictability and intrigue that people expect from the Grand National, and what all modern 'Nationals' (if you can call them that) sadly lack.

I was only 6 when my dad told me to pick my runner. I asked him to put a fiver on Red Marauder for me. His win paid for my ponies medication 🥲 oddly emotional watching this 20 years later!
On the flip side my cousin likes to moan how her pick Smarty finished second that year. I do think if you happen to get terrible conditions like in 01. A spread bet on the long shots is the wisest since the front runners have an increased chance of falling over fences.
Look at how Llewellyn/Beau cuts off Queally/Merry People at the Foinavon fence...2:00-2:03. That is brutal. Makes me feel better when Llewellyn gets tossed later on.
They made changes to the National course a few years later by changing the width of the fences to allow loose horses to run around them plus a designated area to catch them. Furthermore runners were able to bypass a fence in case of an injury to horse or jockey.
Remember it well i backed it by pure chance, bit of a long story, 33 /1, last time I had the winner and that was because everything else fell or pulled up, apart from smarty that ran a great race, had fuck all since, hard race to get the winner
Best grandnational ever, could do with digital inhancing, maybe the bbc could put a master recording on youtube, never seen it so wet at Aintree as it was that day, really heavy going, actually prefer it wet get more fallers, and the loose hoarses caused mayhem.
I must say that I agree with you. Whilst I am always pleased to see horses and jockeys walk away unscathed, much of the spectacle of this race is centred around fallers and unseated jockeys. In fact, you rarely hear the term 'brought down' these days.
David Ellis, if there is a way we can make contact, you'd be welcome to watch my dvds of Grand Nationals dating back to 1960. Thrills and spills galore

@@meganraynes1766 I was 20 when I backed him. Only bet on the grand national. Only ever had 5 winners. He is my favourite. ( The 5 are (Seagram, red marauder, Monty's pass and Tiger roll X 2)
Before I retired from gambling in 2006 I always backed two in the national. In 2001 it was £10 ew on Red marauder and £5 ew on smarty. for £30 ended up £470 up. Backed Red marauder a few times that season. The gods smiled on him on national day
Bit similar to the 1928 race pile up at f8 then just 2 left in it at the end
I was only 6 when my dad told me to pick my runner.
I asked him to put a fiver on Red Marauder for me.
His win paid for my ponies medication 🥲 oddly emotional watching this 20 years later!
Haha I was 11 and nearly put a bet on him but my mum talked me out of it because his odds weren't very good, kicked myself for ages!
On the flip side my cousin likes to moan how her pick Smarty finished second that year. I do think if you happen to get terrible conditions like in 01. A spread bet on the long shots is the wisest since the front runners have an increased chance of falling over fences.
Won £70 on Red Marauder. A brave horse indeed
Great champion
.....swear box at 7.13 Carl.....
Real slow motion stuff
Look at how Llewellyn/Beau cuts off Queally/Merry People at the Foinavon fence...2:00-2:03. That is brutal. Makes me feel better when Llewellyn gets tossed later on.
🇫🇷👍 NEPTUNE COLLONGES 👍🇫🇷
MERCI A VOUS TOUS 🇬🇧🇬🇧✌👍
Thought smarty had it bagged but then with murphy you never really knew what his horse had left 🙄
Loose horses were the real damaging blow in this race...caused a lot of jockeys to pull up
They made changes to the National course a few years later by changing the width of the fences to allow loose horses to run around them plus a designated area to catch them.
Furthermore runners were able to bypass a fence in case of an injury to horse or jockey.
crazy stuff!
Sadly I was on the 2nd horse in this race.
What would have happened if ALL fell? I guess it'll be the fastest or best to remount.
I bet Carl Llewellyn regrets not stopping to adjust the reins. How was he to know though? Beau looked the best horse going into the second circuit.
The reins were actually broken. That's the reason Beau jumped to his left before Carl moved him over to right next to the inside rail.
Ouch 3:06, i felt that one
i wonder if Paddy's return never run in the race would have a shame result or different result
brutal but the horses were safer with the soft landings
Remember it well i backed it by pure chance, bit of a long story, 33 /1, last time I had the winner and that was because everything else fell or pulled up, apart from smarty that ran a great race, had fuck all since, hard race to get the winner
..crashing fall at 1.15...Earthmover...?
Earthmover went on to win his second foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2004 at the grand age of 13.
No, it was Innis Cara....Earthmover unseated his rider
👍👍👍
I won £660 quid on that horse. What a great day that was!
Do you have the 2014 grand national .only ever seen the bloody crap racing tv version.
Stood piss wet through by the mound with my then girlfriend and now wife. We still laugh about how bad the weather was that day!! Wasn't an enjoyable experience that day.
Bloody hell, yes! The rain was biblical that day 😆 My race card fell to bits and ended up buying a shooting hat to stop the rain constantly splatting in my face!!
Ap McCoy and ruby Walsh end together two great jockey's
Still convinced blowing wind would of won if it never got brought to a stop at the fence by a loose horse
Funnily enough Tony McCoy said that Blowing Wind was the one that got away and after this he thought he'd never win the National.
That was gruelling
The conditions were terrible should never have been run sheer cruelty.
I backed the winner but why was the jockey riding for his life on the run in when 30+ lengths clear ?
....because the horse would have pulled itself up otherwise....
@@chatham43 Really ?? Was Red Marauder known for pulling up if slowed down to a canter ?
....not known for it....but slowed to a canter he would have come to a standstill...same with the other finishers..remember it was in exceptionally heavy ground..probably the heaviest in the races history..
Mark Perryman red marauder had been very sloppy at some of his fences before the field was depleted, he did need a bit of stoking along in that ground even though he was known to like it, it was exceptionally bad that day.
I bet 2 horses that day red marauder and smarty a fiver each way on both lol smarty was 20/1 and red marauder 33/1 couldn't believe my luck, I did start to get greedy calling home red marauder cos he was a bigger price haha
Snap i had £10 EW on the winner at 33s and a £5 ew on Smarty. one of my few real successes gambling over the years so much so i "retired" from gambling in October 2006 and havent had a bet since...
michael brown yep, I was doing exactly the same screaming RM because of the price over smarty, after I’d backed both, my father backed beau, the air turned blue when the reins went over one side of its head lol.
これはレースじゃないよ!
生き残りを掛けたサバイバル!
Gutted backed smarty and beau who was cantering
Loose horse very nearly took the two of them out at the Canal second time around
Yep, nearly no finishers lol
