Dick Saunders (sadly no longer with us) was an absolute gentleman. Used to bump into him at point to points and met him in Northampton one day when he was on his way to a function. Still found time to shake my hand and ask how I was. Proper man.
I think Grittar and Dick Saunders are my favourite national winners, superb jumping by a plucky horse, and a brilliant ride by his jockey. What the grand national is all about !
@@lycangypsypriest3190 I agree, Lucan gypsy priest , a really great race, but poor Crisp, heartbreaking as he slowly ran out of steam on the run in to be overtaken by the gallant Rummy, Crisp gave his all, bless him 🏇

I rode Grittar up on the gallops at South Luffenham. What a rabbit! I was 11 and he kept me alive and I gave him a baby bath . He was very hairy and yes, I did scream! But we came 1st. Aww lovely man. Stubble field not fun. I❤u Grits xx
This was the first Grand National I remember, Man Alive was my first ever fave horse, I always wanted to see a grey National winner ever since this race, never thought it would be 30 years exactly. I love these old National videos.
This was one of only two Grand Nationals that I attended. We parked ourselves early at Bechers and having backed Man Alive I was disappointed to see him come past me riderless.
Probably passed it by then at 11 given his best years were 1979-81. He was entered in 1980 but withdrawn in the morning after his trainer walked the course.
The first ever national that i can remember watching and fell in love with the race. The last time u see cheers is jumping f 20 and 21 the horse has dropped to joint last and looks exhausted a professional jockey wud have pulled him up around the canal turn
Geraldine Rees must have been determined to be the first woman jockey to complete the National. When Cheers finished about 2 hours after the winner, its head was reeling all over the place. It's a wonder it didn't collapse and die like what happened to Many Clouds at Cheltenham.
10 horses fell at the 1st not quite beating the 12 in 1951 but equaĺling the 10 in the 1952 race other races with high fallers at the first are 1922 1938 1950 1971 1977 and 2002
It's a dopey game I play with the National. To imagine the race if the winner fell at the first. Wow but wouldn't Hard Outlook have gone down in history as one of the most convincing Grand National winners ever. He would have been out on his own from three out. Not bad at 50/1. What might have been Anthony Webber.
Loving Words was going great 'til brought down three from home - remounted and went on to finish a valiant third - never heard anything of either the horse or its rider (Richard Roundtree? I might be wrong) before or since...
Loving Words would have gone very close. Was entered in 1983 and 1984, but didnt start - so he must have been on the scene but I just dont remember him running again
Poor Carrow Boy, impeded by a loose horse causing him to fall when leading in 1981, put off by a horse falling in front of him and falling at the 4th last here.
Interesting chap but live his final 17 years as a tetraplegic. Earlier raced cars against Jackie Stewart. Ranked in the army, Oxbridge blue, played snooker against Alex Higgins - seemed to have a varied life.
exactly half the field eliminated after fence 8, bechers second time the horses at the back are almost a fence behind, they went too fast grittar 9 15 winning time 2nd fastest
very unusual to see them spread out on ground better than good. In 1983 there was a market around 5/1 that half the field would be out by Bechers first time
...I always thought it strange that Peter O' Sullivan didnt hand over to John Hanmer until after the field had jumped the first fence.......unusual....
yeah the reason was the buses hanmer view was hampered, they missed an awful lot of action between them, aldaniti falling, three to one well fancied falling martinstown and charlotte brew exiting at f3,also royal mail favourite at f6, there were more fallers at f1 in 82 than there have been in the last 5 nationals altogether lol
Duncan Jackson the modern position is high on the bank next to the 3rd fence however before its current location it was somewhere in the centre of the track.
Just happened by chance to see a film of BBC crew setting up at Aintree prior to the 1982 National. In those days they first went on site approx 2 weeks before as all the broadcast and camera points had to be built from scratch due to the poor facilities at Aintree (even the photo finish was on scaffolding on the inner of the course). From a long angle view you can see a camera position and commentary box in the middle of the course near the 3rd fence presumably for John Hanmer as it would also have a good of fences 10, 11 and 12. As said elsewhere Aintree put coaches in between Hanmer and the 1st blocking his view.
Delmoss often forgotten about got round a couple of times and raced in about 5 nationals
