  • Pastor answers a few questions for a view in this episode:
    1. If someone's considering Lutheranism, what should he do?
    2. Where do good works fit if we are saved by faith alone?
    3. What's the difference between Baptists and Lutherans?
    Pastor spends the most time with the final question and outlines two of the six points that He thinks epitomize the difference between Baptists and Lutherans.
    Thanks for watching. Email your question to atpholycross@gmail.com. While you're waiting for Pastor to answer your question, you can fill the time by liking Holy Cross's facebook page, sharing this video with your friends, and subscribing to ATP on RUclips.

    I have grown up baptist and went to a baptist college and am serving with Baptist. I can count on 1 hand the amount of people I have met that believe man is born with the tendency to sin vs the sin nature that you made the distinction on. Most people I know would whole heartedly agree we have a sin nature from the moment of conception.

    • @rukusfan1387

      If so, where does the tendency come from? The are not exclusive but complementary. The sin nature produces a proclivity to sin, a tendency.

    I would say the Lutheran distinctiveness is the belief their pastors speak for God on earth. It is through the pastor that you come into contact with God's grave through the sacraments. Pastors hold the keys to heaven which is for your salvation.

      Hi Shaun. This is a very common quesiton. Baptism saves (1 Peter 3:21) because it gives the forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit(Acts 2:38), and regenerates us as children of God (John 3:3,5; Titus 3:5). Baptism is one of the ways God gives us His gifts and the faith which receives those gifts. Check out the following videos if you'd like:

      Baptists will be saved like everyone else: by faith in Christ. Sadly, many of their false teachings so detract from faith in Christ and lead people to trust in their own merits, such as their decision for Jesus, rather than Jesus' work for them.

    • @rukusfan1387
      @rukusfan1387 2 года назад +2

      @@grind2138 He used the example "make a decision for Christ" but there are many. There are many because the initial orientation, the beginning of evangelicalism basically says that I can reach up to God, that I can "raise my hand if I made a decision FOR Christ." That is the essence of works theology - that I have to do something to "get saved." That is the error.
      Here are two decent examples: Christ left the 99 sheep to go look for the lost. The sheep did not ask to be saved; the sheep did not make a decision to be saved. The other is the man set upon by thieves: he was so badly beaten that he could not raise his hand to be saved or "go down to the altar to pray through and get saved." The bottom line is that if I have to do something then I am doing something "to get saved." That is backwards- instead, scripture teaches that "faith comes from hearing ... the Word of God." It does not come from me "making a decision" or "going down the altar every night of a revival week just to make sure I am saved.
      Instead, scripture teaches that those who believe and are Baptized "shall" be saved but those who do not believe (even if they are baptized) shall not be saved. So, scripture teaches that belief, that faith in Christ saves us, alone with no action on our part. So, if faith comes from hearing the Word, and thus is placed inside us through our hearing it - then by the time we "raise our hand" or "go down to the altar" we are far behind Christ who has already grabbed us by the heart. Now what? Well, since all I said is true then what it means is that by the time we "raise our hand and make a decision," we are actually trusting Christ. It would be better said if the preacher said, "those who are continuing to trust Christ, raise your hand! Or "those who are going to continue to trust in Christ, come to the altar and let's give thanks!
      You have been taught that salvation (faith in Christ) is a gift of God I am sure. That is true. But I can tell you that it is likely that no one has ever gone to their birthday party and looked at all the gifts and decided if they were going to take them or not. Never! Instead, every gift is received and can only be rejected. That is actually what happens when someone hears the Gospel. The gift is inside because faith comes from hearing and all they can do is reject it. Sadly, many do walk away after hearing a good preacher deliver the Gospel and the parable of the sower applies - the devil comes and snatches the faith away from them and they go away rejecting the gift that they were given.
      You cannot "accept Jesus into your heart" because as a unsaved sinner you do not own your heart - the devil owns your heart and the only thing that tears it away from the devil is the Gospel. "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." From the ear to the heart and from the heart to the lip and from the lip to the life in Christ.

    • @AskThePastor
      @AskThePastor  3 года назад +2

      No trouble all. I think the way you're approaching things is great. God's will is that we hold fast to "all things" Christ commanded and taught (Matthew 28:20), and the Holy Spirit commends the Bereans in Acts 17:11 as "more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so."
      As far as John's baptism, it was from God. St. John writes in John 1:6, "There was a man sent from God, whose name was John." and in John 1:33 John the Baptist himself says, "I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me. . ." So God sent God to baptize, which was a fulfillment of what the Lord had spoken through Ezekiel and Zechariah about the Lord washing His people with water to give them new hearts. John was the instrument through which God baptized sinners for the remission of sins. Hope this helps!

      kev, look for a "confessional lutheran" church - LCMS is an example. They teach from the scripture that God comes to us, not us to Him. Knowing and learning this one point changes my whole theology from arminius calvinist to what scripture actually teaches - we are dead and floating and Christ finds us and gives us life by the Gospel.
      The best example of Christ finding us and TAKING us away from the devil is the parable of the lost sheep - the sheep did not raise his paw or go to the altar to pray to be "saved." The Shepherd came and got him.
      The other parable is a great one too - the man set upon by thieves. He was beaten almost to death and could not raise his hand or go to the altar to get saved ... someone had to come save him or he was gonna die. Same is true of Christ.
      REJOICE! The ONLY reason you know about Jesus is because He decided to come and get you.
      Send me a message if you need help finding a confessional LCMS church - be glad to do it. Cheers!

      As an answer to your question I will use the Explanation of the Small Catechism by Concordia Publishing House. It is as follows:
      312. Is it possible for an unbaptized person to be save?
      Yes. Only unbelief condemns. Before the institution of Baptism, Old Testament believers were saved through faith in the promise of Christ. Those who believe the Gospel and yet die before Baptism are not condemned, because "they have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding Word of God"(1 Peter 1:23) However, faith does not despise what the Lord promises and gives in Baptism. The unbaptized should not delay in receiving Baptism.
      Read Luke 23:39-43. Although Christ had not yet instituted Baptism, the thief on the cross was saved through the Word of Christ.
      In Luther's Small Catechism in section two on Baptism the question is asked:
      What benefits does Baptism give?
      It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.
      Again it asks: Which are these words and promises of God?
      Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: "whoever believes and is Baptized will be saved but whoever does not believe, will be condemned."(Mark 16:16)
