Credor by a landslide. Journes are nice looking, elegant and superbly constructed. But this Credor is a masterpiece in simplicity, worthy of Duffour's praise. The dial alone is painstakingly painted by hand and just attaching it to the case can take hours. I've held both, and one almost brought me to tears (You can guess which one). Until you see the fineness of that brushing, the sheer depth of that anglage, you don't truly understand the phrase "high horology"

Art is my passion and I dream about painting. Vermeer, Van Eyck, and Rothko are artists touched by the hand of God. Sculpture, however, is something you back up into when you're looking at a painting, and then there's time, something I see on my iPhone... until now.
Recently I discovered a video about an independent Japanese watchmaker, Masahiro Kikumo. Kikumo's Wadokei watch shook me to my core and exposed me as a fool. I began asking myself, how does a mechanical watch work? What is a tourbillon? I fell down the rabbit hole and I can't find my way out.
I'm mesmerized by the A. Lange & Sohne Datograph and the Philippe Dufour Simplicity. These watches are masterpieces of engineering and utilitarian sculpture but... they are not painting. Then I discovered the Credor Eichi ll.
If I could have just one watch in the world it would be the Credor Eichi II with Ruri blue dial. It is the most beautiful watch in the world. The porcelain dial is lovingly glazed in blue enamel as deep as the midnight sky. Each number is represented by minimalist strokes and the Credor logo is exactingly painted with an impossibly thin brush. The Credor Eichi ll breathes and pulses. It is a painted masterpiece. Take a Rothko, reduce it to the size of a postage stamp, and the Credor Eichi II would be the result. A silent hum on your wrist.
Still, I keep asking myself a vexing question. Could the Eichi II be better? With supplication and respect for Credor, I believe it can. Take the Credor inscription on the dial. Each letter, like the number markers, is painstakingly painted to perfection. Even so, is the Credor inscription too large? Would it be preferable slightly smaller? Perhaps, even, not there at all?
Included here are four versions of the Eichi II. On the left is the original. In the middle is the watch with a slightly smaller inscription and on the right shows the dial with the crown logo only. The dial with the smaller inscription is preferable to the existing watch. Perhaps the most controversial version is the fourth dial, with nothing at all. Hear me out. Yes, it feels empty at first, but like looking at a great painting, I encourage you to contemplate the color, the depth, the commanding force of quiet, slowly, over time.
To reiterate the point of hard looking, here too is another painted masterpiece, by the artist, Ad Reinhardt. Unlike conventional paintings, there's no artist's signature. The color blue is deep and expansive. It pulses. It's a blue that's bluer than blue, not unlike the Ruri blue dial on the Credor Eichi II. Imagine this same painting by Ad Reinhardt with a signature in the usual places. It's not the same.
Another conviction too is that I don't believe the polished bezel suits the dial. The reflections and glare distract the eye from the dial's color, depth, precision, and purity. The photos here, because of skillful camera lighting, show an altogether matte bezel. It allows the eye to settle on the dial without distractions. A brushed platinum bezel is preferable to polished.
Credor, as is common wisdom, is the artistic arm of Grand Seiko. While Credor's parent company focuses on engineering prowess, Credor is the expressive arm. The Eichi II is a singular example of this artistic method, unmatched by European watchmakers. Japan has a long history of lacquerware and the Eichi II dial is entirely hand lacquered by the incomparable, Isshu Tamura. So why blemish a painted masterpiece with words, a logo, an advertisement?
My preference is that Credor delete their inscription on the Eichi II. It's a blemish on the purest, most beautiful watch ever made. It's an unnecessary flourish that serves vanity. I question, too, the need to use a logo or an inscription of any kind on their watches. There are a growing number of independent horologists who feel no need to pontificate their brand. If Credor is truly the artistic arm of Grand Seiko let brilliance of mind and form and color manifest itself unencumbered by corporate interests. I promise, with this radical change, they will come.
Even with this critique, the Credor Eichi ll is the most beautiful watch in the world. My iPhone just won't do.

Still, the Accutron is starting and stopping to accomplish that - the same reason why you can hear it buzzing against the ear. Same for modern ultra-high-beat quartz movements bearing the Bulova name; the motion looks smooth, but the action is broken. Aside from a rarely seen Piaget from 2016, there's nothing that's actually constant motion in the wristwatch space.

Hi Tim, do you think Credor having cheap stainless steel quartz watches previously on the market that now go for 500 to 800 dollars hurt its present status as Seiko's ultra brand?

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  2 месяца назад +2

No. The 2016 FP Journe Elegante 48 sold for $12,000 as a quartz watch not actually powered by a Journe movement. That doesn't seem to hurt the market for the $1 million-plus collectibles, vintage, chiming watches. And the real reason it won't hurt modern Micro Artist Credors is that most of those cheaper Credors of the past are completely unknown outside of Japan.

FP Journe for me, by a landslide, both front and back. The only truly impressive thing about the Credor (relative to the price) is the really wide beveling on the movement plates. Those bevels stand out on an otherwise visually dissapointing movement. I understand why you're saying that the movement on the Journe lacks the intricacy and detail of the Credor, and technically you're right, but the overall impression goes to FPJ which makes the Credor's movement look like a plain Jane. I'm all for understated dials, but not understated movement finishing on high horology pieces. Just my $0.2. At the end of the day both watches are incredible and it's no surprise you wanted to make a versus video.

You can get 99% of that Credor by purchasing a Grand Seiko. That FP Journe is one of a kind. Yes, it has an acquired taste, but you know who made your watch, and it has way more personality than the Credor. Well "Crete" can mean crest or crown as Tim puts it. Hence why the logo forms a crest like shape. But it can also mean "Peak", which is why the logo can also be interpreted as mountains conjoining together. It's multiple interpretations strewn together at once.

Credor Eichi is very very good, but I think it's not interesting enough. Polishing is not everything in watchmaking. The front is impressive, but the layout of the movement on the back, the bottom cover and the engraving on the movement make it feel careless. All in all, a complete and continuous story is not told.

I saw the Journe CB in NYC - nice… but felt small and not expensive. Love Credor - but have never held the Eichi in hand. That Byblos is HIDEOUS 🤢

Most of those choosing the Credor are obviously acting in bad faith as contrarians to the more "hyped" brand. The Credor is nice, but doesn't compare to the journe in esthetics, composition, and originality...it's a boring watch. Journe is on a different level as far as artistry goes.

Level of finishing on Credor is not seen on any other brand including Laurent Ferrier. I have seen both watches sin person and I really don't understand the hype of FP. Horrible finishing

@@kresimirpleicSure it depends on how you value, but for me CB is indeed overpriced(over hyped) in the market.

that cb movement is not in the same league w the credor, and i dont even like the credor. This isnt a fair comparison. The cb is one hyped watch w very little substance for the price. But at the end of the day it is a cash cow for FBJ just like people would pay 3Mil for the garbage tiffany patek
