Thanks Adrian, brilliant as ever, I've really loved learning this one.
For anyone, like me, who finds the stretch in the opening riff really difficult, you could try barring the ninth fret with your first finger and then using second and third fingers to add the extra notes rather than your pinky.

OH I only gone and waited for the invention of the internet till I actually got a true insight into THAT guitar solo. Years spent with my now faded CLASH songbook my american import THE CLASH vinyl first album (remixed and extra songs) , then CD's came along.....then I bought a guitar trainer CD player to slow the songs down without changing key.....and finally 40 years later I'm sitting with a REAL les paul and getting the true insight into playing this. Never for a second did I think he bent the notes, but you're on the money there. And as for that one step bend ,up one fret up. at the G...GENIUS ! But I have to say having not quite the fingers of jonesy or you I do play the intro with the added Aflat note but not on the 5th string. I simply let the low E drone whist moving from the Bnote on the 4th string to the Aflat on the same string in a quick move playing only the bottom 3 strings then straight back to the E. Thanks for taking time out to disassemble this song and all the others you've done.

    Hey Adrian!
I'm a proper novice with the guitar still, but I've loved the eclectic choices you pick for your song tutorials. You're the reason I've been able to learn and (sloppily) play any tunes at all. I know you've done Making Plans for Nigel on this channel, and that's probably going to be the next song I dig into. However, I really love XTC, and I'd be super happy if you made a tutorial for one of their songs off of Black Sea at some point! I totally understand if you have a proper list of songs that you're planning on making videos for, so no worries if you're not able to do it/aren't in a hurry to make that video, but I thought there would be no harm in asking!

Excellent! Part of my mid teenage years and one of the earliest vinyl singles I got.Proudly the singles had scratched “Porky Prime Cut” from the guy who cut the Master discs.
Back in the day when this was released,my elder brother had just purchased a Black Columbus Les Paul which was decorated with the word Positivo in garage door self adhesive lettering.
This was in homage to an NME photo of Paul Simenons Bass a Rickenbacker with “Positivo” .Back then [pre internet] I tried to play my brothers guitar and Complete Control Intro in particular, only to discover there was no way of getting a good crunch sound as the Cheap Columbus guitar had low output single coils in big humbucker housing.
Thanks for this fine uplifting video.

Was a fuzz pedal involved ?

    • @acpg

Yes, I don't like the way people are always droning on about 'tone' either, though I'm sure I'm occasionally guilty myself. There's a quick run through of the gear I'm using towards the end of this video. No pedals here, just straight into the amp.

Thanks Adrian! I bought this as a 7" single when it came out, and saw the Clash three times in 1977-8 and even got to meet them right after this was released. I had their autographs and everything, but ended up throwing them away, since autographs were just so against the punk ethos. I learned to play bass playing along with Paul on the first album. I still kick myself about the autographs, but to be able to plug in my DC P90 LP, with the right amount of gain, and get that Mick Jones sound gives me goosebumps. I bought my Telecaster 30 years go, just 'cause of the late great Joe Strummer. "The only band that matters".
