Saw The Clash play this track live as part of their White Riot tour in 1977 in my teens. THE most punk gig I ever witnessed. Superb energy

Me too mate. Saw them at Victoria Park in ' 78 and The Lyceum in '81 too. This and City of the Dead on the other side, fantastic underrated gems.

The greatest record ever released changed my life aged 13 in 1977 - Still never bettered - it has everything packed into 3 minutes - Great intro riff - Great singalong chorus - great solo - fantastic drop out in the middle - outstanding outro - The Bohemian Rhapsody of Punk! Mick Jones' guitar never sounded better on the verge of the best feedback ever.

I saw The Clash a number of times in the 1980's - AWESOME! A good friend of mine was prominent in the music industry, and she called me one day and said she was going to be meeting Paul Simonon (bassist) in a few minutes - I told her, give him a kiss on the cheek for me and tell him I think he's an awesome bassist (I'm a bassist myself). She did, and he gave her his guitar pick for me! I of course still have it, along with his and Mick Jones autographs on a London Calling LP.

The Clash taught me a lot about making diverse and unique music. London Calling and Sandinista in particular were big to me in middle school. I think that helped lead me to be open to all styles of music as an adult. You get a sample of what all the different parts of England sounded like then.

just the best 45. the delivery is there, no messing, just what a single should do, and those parts it moves into, each one is spot on. it stands shoulder to shoulder with any other 45, it packs a punch, could not ask for more.

It's funny, because at the end of the story,Joe Strummer proved that himself he was a control freak. He even said that music does not matter, and it's the attitude that bla-bla-bla.
But Strummer is a genius lyricist,a good singer(one of the best without training),a music lover ,with one feet in the punk ethics and one feet in the Rolling Clash.
This man made the rock'n'roll world exciting, interesting and fresh.
All those Clash years, with Sounds,NME,and Melody Maker, were thé best.
    TX for the reaction.

Saw the Clash in Croydon in the day. I was very much into the punk scene at that time but it was a horrible night. Very violent with a nasty atmosphere. There were clashes (sorry!) between different groups and it was a truly scary gig. My girlfriend at the time attended and was scared as hell. The second album onwards saw them descend into the rock mainstream and it felt that they had deserted us.

Yeah, this is pretty much quintessential punk-era The Clash - though even then, not entirely punk what with the classic rock guitar solo that's way more proficient than the whole punk ethos was supposed to represent. Either way, one of my favourite Clash songs and a highlight on the American version of their debut. It certainly helps to have the lyrics open, though!
