J Mascis said that Ron Asheton taught him how to properly play TV Eye. He said “when you bend the 7th fret of the G string, you also play the 8th fret on the B string.” I don’t think you are supposed bend the 8th fret B string, just keep it straight while bending the 7th fret G string, but I’m sure a little bend won’t be a problem lol.

Ron Ashton, such an influential yet somewhat overlooked guitar player. Everything here is amazing. I wanna be your dog has to be one of the greatest riffs in all of rock. Simple. Original. Brilliant

Iggy told this weekend in his superb radio show on BBC4 "Confidential" that they were totally influenced by first Pink Floyd album, specially with guitar phrases and tones by Syd Barret. He played Interstellar Overdrive to ilustrate that, think now in I Wanna be yr Dog main riff and connect the spots. Syd was a primitive player but his tone ideas were incredible. East Bay Ray of Dead Kennedys also recognizes that when developing that piercing killer short-delay tone. 🤘

The 1st album is mostly Flying V into a Marshall and a strat for funhouse. the fuzz is a vox tonebender, which is a brighter version of a fuzz face, some people say he used a fuzzrite too. There are live photos with the tonebender so he definitely used that at least live.

Great video with some fantastic Asheton riffs. But I have to admit I shake my head at so many comments focusing on the gear. "Actually, it was a flying v into a vox tonebender...with this specific model Marshall..." It's amazing how obsessed some fans are with the gear, far more so than the artist themselves who created it. The irony of that mentality is that it also misses the entire point. If all Asheton had was a Danelectro with lipstick pickups he would have turned everything to 10 and it would have sounded just as good.
And today, the gear obsessed would be saying, "Actually, he used a Danelectro with hand-wound pickups into a Marshall speaker with a 2 1/4" tear. But first you have to pour half a Heineken, warmed to 78 degrees, onto the speaker terminals..."

Oh man, yes that is an insanely good record. Raw Power is awesome, but for me Funhouse is the best. If I end up on a ventilator I really want them to put headphones on me and loop "Loose". I'm pretty sure they will find me with the tube pulled out and thrashing against a wall with my ass hanging out of the hospital gown. If I don't make it, well I can think of much worse ways to go out.

It’s interesting that the “secret” to the riff to Be Your Dog is the droney E, it gives the song such a cool vibe. Since John Cale was the producer and he loved droney stuff, like Venus in Furs etc, I wonder if he had an effect on Ron’s playing

Photos from the first album sessions show Ron playing a Strat, but there’s also definitely the sound of a Gibson Flying V on there too. So he probably used both guitars on the first LP. I hear a silicon based fuzz on that too. On Funhouse Ron told me he used a Strat through a 50 watt Marshall head and a 8x10 Marshall speaker cab. Good job on nailing those tones.

Ron Asheton is one of the greatest ... an Hard Rock way of riffing but brought so essential end penetrating that came to be an example (with Mick Ronson) for the early Punk. I think he used a Mosrite Fuzz instead of a Fuzz Face in JH Style. I think that for the Funhouse LP he used a Stratocaster, because the videos of the concerts and the sound of the LP put in this direction.
